VRDave VRDave says...

Escaflowne is a bit more comical, and the fights are mostly in medieval style mecha, but it's a fantasy world with strange humanoid creatures and such like Record of Lodoss War. The tone is fairly serious and the story is epic, which makes it a great watch after Lodoss War.

lantis lantis says...

Record of Lodoss Wars are both magnificent entries into high fantasy anime. And both are very good in their own right. Escaflowne, on the one hand, is an epic tale about conflict, humanity, destructive machinery, and fate. Record of Lodoss Wars has epic adventure, magic, and reawakening gods. Wee bit different, but both enjoyable.

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Both Lodoss War and Escaflowne are action series set in the same environment, so you'll definitely like the other one.

Folken24 Folken24 says...

They both have a strong epic fantasy feel, with rich character relationships.

In both the main character starts out as a young, impetious youth, but over the course of the story he grows into a mature warrior.

Two wonderful fantasy anime once again. One old, one new, one borrowed... I mean.... Anyhow, Lodoss Wars and Scrapped Princess are two very awesome series for those of you looking for some spell slinging sword swinging action.

sublime sublime says...

Swords, sorcery and some epic fantasy make Scrapped Princess and Lodoss War excellent watches. Lodoss war being of the more traditional staple doesnt detract fromt he fact that both series have great stories and great characters.

Tomte Tomte says...

Swords, magic, monsters and ... well "classical" fantasy tuff. Both series fit quite good into this desription. Scrapped Princess does have a comic side that is missing in Lodoss.

XMrNiceguyX XMrNiceguyX says...

I could also recommend the TV, but since the OVA is soo much better than the TV, I'll only recommend this one. The main reason for picking this one is because both series play in afantasy world and have the traditional: Good vs Evil fights. While this isn't that appearant in Scrapped Princess, it IS there. Though Record of Lodoss War has been influenced clearly by Pen*Paper RPGs and have a much heavier Fantasy aspect: Ie: You'll find alot more wierd creatures in RoLW than in Scrapped Princess

DSAP DSAP says...

wwith less magic but another solid serious fantasy setting it will leave a good feeling in your mouth after you finish

VRDave VRDave says...

The Heroic Legend of Arslan has the same serious tone as Record of Lodoss War OVA. The animation style is similar and the story is really good. It is also better than the OVA I might say, but I could be wrong.

sothis sothis says...

Arislan and Lodoss War, though plot-wise are not similar, are very similar in every other aspect. The characters shine, the fantasy-like atmosphere is engaging and exciting, and the epic feel is quite noticable. I definitely think you'd enjoy one if you enjoyed the other.

If you want to watch some good ol' fashioned fantasy, look no further than these two titles. Both are abundant in monsters, dragons, rash heroes, and anything else cliched about these genres.

Nicknames Nicknames says...

Both are sword & sorcery anime that feel like they were taken straight out of a D&D campaign. So if you liked one and want to see another show featuring a group of heroes in a quest to stop an evil wizard and save the world then give the other a go.

LadyPsychic LadyPsychic says...

Both are early 90's sword & scorcery anime.  Both involve a group of heroes trying to defeat an evil wizard and have a similar look and feel to them.

Bastard!!

Bastard!!

The Four Lords of Havoc have one terrible goal – to awaken the god Anthrasax and recreate the world. To stop them, Yoko, a maiden of Metallicana, awakens the ancient wizard Dark Schneider from within a 14-year old boy by bestowing upon him her virgin kiss. The only problem now is that the most chaotic, lecherous wizard in history resides inside the body of an innocent child. Even worse, he’s determined that neither hydras nor minotaurs should stand between him and his dream to conquer everyone and take the women for himself… all of which is less than convenient when trying to save the world!

Reasons you might like Bastard!!...

paladin paladin says...

both are fantasy oriented. bastard plays the all powerful entity anti-hero...having the best of every aspect imaginable....looks, strength, and infinte magic... where as in ROLW you have a party of people distributing the different aspects of a well rounded powerful team... regardless of who contains the power, the both contain the same central themes. Dark is like a womanizing all powerful Parn w/out a party. If you liked ROLW you will like bastards twist and humor in the traditional D&D setting...its like a low level dungeon crawl, with a lvl 30 wizard lvl 30 fighter....Dark ownz all quickly, where as ROLW draws it out a bit. ehehe.

cerberus38 cerberus38 says...

The similarities are clear in the settings of both anime: Dungeons and dragons-style fantasy with dark gods waiting to be resurrected. Bastard!! focusses more on action and is slightly comedic whereas Record Of Lodoss War is much more serious and has a superior storyline. The similar nature and artwork of both shows means that if you like one, you should try the other.

Slayers

Slayers

Meet Lina Inverse, a mighty sorceress who fights evil in the name of... greed, gluttony and black magic?! When she meets Gourry, a swordsman whose skill with the blade is rivaled only by his stupidity, Zelgadis, a grumpy sorceror who's been turned into a golem, and Rezo, a priest known for his benevolence (with a dark secret), you know her adventures are just beginning!

lantis lantis says...

Again, I cannot stress the greatness of both these shows. Slayers and Record of Lodoss Wars are simply perenial fantasy anime, enjoyable even if you don't like the genre. Try both!

LinkSword LinkSword says...

Both anime portray broad fantasy worlds with plenty of the usual elements, such as sorcerers, swordsmen, elves, dragons and ogres.

The main cast is composed by a group of several quirky, motley characters who end up traveling together in order to accomplish their common goals, as they enhance their friendship bonds along the way.

Although there is a stronger comedic reliance in Slayers, the characters really remind of each other and there is a similar epic feel in the overall plot and storytelling, not to mention that both take place in a medieval-like world.

Orphen

Orphen

For the past five years Orphen has been on a journey to find the Sword of Baltanders and Bloody August, a feared dragon who was once a human sorceress named Azelie. With only a small trail of clues to follow, Orphen must unlock the secrets to the Sword of Baltanders or everyone he cares about will be doomed to face the wrath of the Tower of Fang Elders, or even Bloody August herself!

Reasons you might like Orphen...

VRDave VRDave says...

Orphen is more focused on magic, but the tale is epic, just as Lodoss War is. The 'cause' is great, and the humor is also a little more apparent. However, the adventure and fun factor will make Ophen a good show to watch after the Lodoss War OVA.

kamirura kamirura says...

Orphen and Record of Lodoss war have alot in common. They take place at the same time era and they deal with pretty much the same thing, though Orphen's story is abit smaller than Record of Lodoss war. Orphen also contains all the same lovely magic scenes as Record of Lodoss Wars does. If you liked Record of Lodoss wars you gonna love Orphen ^_____^

Truly, Lodoss War and Juuni Kokki have a great deal in common. Not only are they both wonderful fantasy tales, but they both are surprisingly epic watches. Juuni Kokki is a bit more unusual, while Lodoss War is a fantasy staple, but both are definitely fantastic. I definitely think you'd like this.

knaecke knaecke says...

While Record of Lodoss War plays in some alternative version of the european middle ages Juuni Kokki is based on some chinese equivalent of that period (unfortunately I'm not that well versed with chinese history). In both series the "way of the sword" plays a very important role as do things like honesty and loyalty. The stories are both told in a dark atmosphere. Juuni Kokki has much more story while Record of Lodoss War concentrates on its great love stories and the battles. In fact for some people Juuni Kokki might even carry too much story. You have a LOT to read but it's really worth it! All in all JK seems a bit more "mature" than ROLW. It's discernible that JK is based on Novels and Lodoss on Role Play Games. And as a last similarity, they both feature great soundtracks!

They're both classic tales of a hero fighting off the baddies and the big evil behind em, all while exploring an interesting fantasy world. If you liked Lodoss War, you will like this classic tale of swords, mystery, and fantasy all around

If you are looking for a good fantasy adventure with plenty of monsters and fantasy characters to go around, Ys is for you. With a great mix of plot and action, you can't go wrong if you liked Lodoss War.

sothis sothis says...

Arion is an epic tale of fantasy and mystery, and so is Lodoss War. Both are engaging stories which will intrigue and captivate you, while the lead hero shines and is determined to fulfill his mission. Although the plot might not seem to warrant this recommendation, give it a try.

herano herano says...

If you like epic fantasy with a retrolook, you can't go wrong with Arion or Record of lodoss War. While Arion has Greek myth as inspiration and Lodoss is more of a classic fantasy, both have a fast pace, great story and detailed, beautiful designs and a simular epic feel to them. If you like one you should try the other!
