Mushoku Tensei and ReZero both take brutal, honest looks at their main protagonists. Yes, they're both isekai, but much more than that, they're both abject failures in their eyes, and likely the eyes of those who knew them. Both learned to just live with their shame of being NEETs who weren't working at anything or looking to accomplish any goals.

The character compositions of the main protagonists are quite similar, and Mushoku Tensie's main character may even be considered one potential outcome for ReZero's if he had stayed in his home world for another 15 years.

If you're looking for isekai about people who were NEETs and outcasts in society, both these series feature characters who must face and overcome their precognitions of themselves.

Both of these shows are Isekais which are becoming more and more popular but these have really stood out for me by both having very strong unique qualities. Great world building, character development, animation.Re:zero as an Isekai differs with the MC not being overtly strong but having a power (per say) that he has to utilize to accomplish his goals & its what makes RE:zero interesting and refreshing to watch. I would say it has a little less worldbuilding and adventure but more Character Development and intrigue

Jamikin Jamikin says...

rezero and mushoku tensei are still to this day the best animes ive seen (atleast for me). Both are animes which i think rly affected isekai genres popularity. Both animes also just feel somehow similar allthough they arent that similar other than that they arent the basic isekai trash we get nowadays, but i can almost guarantee if you liked mushoku tensei you will like re:zero and the same thing the otherway aswell :D

Barrowight Barrowight says...

Similar premise of being reincarnated into a world with magic, but Mushoku Tensei has a less annoying MC and much less dark atmosphere.

While it certinly doesn't seem like it at first, the protagonists of these two shows are actually fairly similar. While Yuuki from Mirai Nikki is quite a bit more pathetic for most of the show, both characters have a surprisingly realistic streak of cowardice, but are generally able to solve their problems (less so in Yuuki's case).

Both shows involve mysterious scenarios dealt with by the power of foresight. Both shows begin with the main character being thrown into another world, figuratively in the case of Mirai Nikki and literally in the case of Re:Zero.

Predicting either show is difficult, so if you enjoy the suspense, action, characters, and/or mystery of either of these shows, you'll probably enjoy the other.

If you struggle with finding your way in life and have no idea how to deal with painful failures, I suggest watching either of these 2.

If you're looking for anime with characters struggling to figure out what is their place in the world, these 2 do a great job at it. What makes these anime special is the motivation that drives main characters, either Subaru in Re:Zero… or Sorata, Nanami, Rita in Sakurasou… Their motivation is very humane, very realistic. It’s nothing pure and light-hearted like in typical shounen anime. Here you can actually see selfishness behind their actions, believes and things they’re saying, as well as agony and despair when they cannot achieve their goals and how they deal with such painful situations. For this presentation of life’s “dark side” - namely disappointments and dealing with constant failures in achieving life goals, both of these anime are (in my opinion) more realistic than most other titles.

MrValgard MrValgard says...

Characters in both series are similar- and unfortunately similar irritating. When something going right all was happy but when they come across some trouble - show how disgusting and pity they are(blame others)..they call it realistic - but if your surrounding reality are like that (without honor, care of 2nd ppl) well.. anyway it make this series very similar

***SPOILERS***

Both are very, VERY dark takes on a normally stupidly cheery genre, and both take this sadistic, awesome angle on their topics, and run with it... and they run very well, too.

Both involve a character who can turn back time, although in slightly different manners, and both use this power, traumatizing as it is, to stop death and pain from connecting with the one they most desire to help.

Sailnir Sailnir says...

Both have a dark tone that pervades a cute setting. Chances are if you want to see how your preconcived ideas can get really warped, watch this show.

AnimeFan6 AnimeFan6 says...

Both are in typically light genres that typically involve normal people suddenly being much more powerful, & they both are pretty dark psycholagical thriller anime instead.

Re:Zero and Steins;Gate 0 have so much in common; plot-wise, character personalities, both have zero in the title :)  Both Rintaro Okabe and Subaru Natsuki have the abiltiy to go back in time and redo past events. They are desperately trying to keep their loved ones alive and out of harms way and ultimately attempting to reach that final perfect world line. If you enjoy one I'm sure you'll enjoy the other.

Great on going show! i love the mystery behind it all and how the macabre humor still found no matter what happens. its a great mix or fantasy, romance, comedy and mild gore! 5stars! cant wait to see the next episode ;)

the melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya i think I rated it a 5 out of 5 but i rated it a 4 at first because you get to this part in the show where its just non stop wasted repeated episodes for no reason whatsoever. But if you can get throught that you will definately have a rewarding ending as the story nonetheless is nothing but spectacular. I also highly recommend watching the OVA for Melancholy it is 6 out of 5 and its so amazing.

Also am watching starting life in another world and I really like it because theres depth in the story and thats one of the most important thing i find in an anime is story because if it has good content and story what else can you ask for? your always hook wanting to watch the next episode.

Both anime star a main character who is more than beats the eye,and stars a female lead with white hair, a white attire that is a powerful magician and also half demi-human.When I started watching Re: Zero.. the thieving character "Chin", instantly reminded me of Hans from RNY, they both have hair covering half their face, they have a slobbish appearance and they both wield daggers.

What I found is they have a similar vibe, both anime start out as this cool action adventure anime.. but they both turn into something completely different and far more darker. A good amount of both anime is also spent on the same situation, rather than moving on in the story like you would have thought was going to happen.

sipes42 sipes42 says...

Both anime are set in alternate worlds, and both anime are similar to murder-mysteries. Both main characters are overconfident (most of the time), although not as much in Re:Zero. Both anime have a sense of urgency that makes them suspenseful and often action-packed. Re:Zero has a larger, unknown plot with a bit less investigation. Rokka no Yuusha has a more straightforward plot, and the mystery is acknowledged fairly early in the show. Re:ZERO is also a fair bit darker than Rokka no Yuusha.

Without getting too detailed and spoiling things, I'll just say that if you enjoy the mystery, suspense, action, and/or characters from either of these shows, you'll probably like the other to some extent.

Both anime are about outsiders entering a steange world (literally or politically). There is plenty of danger, intrigue, interesting powers, and lots of strange beasts. The cast is full of bizarre characters, both powerful and weak. And there are scenes that will tug on your heart, make you laugh, get you on the edge of your seat.

The leads are suddenly transported to a new world though one is upon death.  it is a magical world with a strong male lead and all girl support cast for the most part.  Both go as they were in their previous life and start with nothing but the clothes on their backs and whatever is on their persons.  They meet a girl almost immediately who helps them navigate and understand the new world.
