The House of Small Cubes

The House of Small Cubes

An old man resides in a city mostly submerged by water, living in a home he had to build on top of his old one. His daily routine now consists of smoking his pipe, drinking wine, watching television and eating the fish he catches. Living alone in the silent desolation of the elderly he is surrounded by photographs but no people. One day he drops his pipe into the water and it disappears into his old, submerged home. To retrieve it he rents a scuba suit, but once he descends into the place he used to live he is overwhelmed by the memories of the life he used to have - the family he used to know.

Two bittersweet shorts. No dialogue. WATER. Memories. Nostalgia. Soft animation. Soft music. Go!

Both shorts give off a sad feeling set to tender music but no speaking of the characters is needed to get the point across. Water is a theme in both shorts and they give off a very melancholic feel looks wise. Check em out!

La Maison and Rain Town are two very bittersweet and touching tales that are told without dialogue. Sad, but beautiful.

Both are short, melancholic, and atmospheric silent films which share the same vibes. So if you liked one go ahead and check the other.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these anime are short, melancholy, and take place in a world that has way more water than ours. With few to no words, limited cast, and soft music, these are pretty similar. If you liked one, you can watch the other in the time it would take you to watch a single episode of a regular-length anime.

YariMari YariMari says...

They are both short, non-dialogue animes that give of the same sad vibe. The animation is also different from how it usually looks in anime. I think you should give them both a go if you want to see something different and touching.

Hutai Hutai says...

Both are very short and have no dialogues. But they have a wonderful story, with a bit of melancholy or sadness. Great simbolism, breath taking and very fitting music.

Both are short films that feature a character making friends (or trying to make friends in the case of Je t'aime) with a robot/android.  Both are rather melacholy and both feature characters walking empty streets.  Both also have the themes of friendship and lonliness.

While passing by an alley he spots a quirky red robot who, upon destroying and eating another robot, grows a mechanical piece onto its makeshift tail. Intrigued, the boy observes the robot as it methodically eats and grows, and whether he likes it or not, this stray robot soon appears to not want to leave the boy’s side...

A child and his/her robot - a fun idea by any means. Rain Town explores the more melancholy scenario, while Junk Town is definitely more of a pick me up. Fans of one should at minimum appreciate the other.

Kari5 Kari5 says...

While Junk Town is not as gloomy, it quickly came to mind when watching Rain Town. Both of these shorts are about children and a robot who follows them. If you liked one, I recommend checking out the other.

If you liked 100 Byou Cinema, and you especially liked the robots, then maybe Rain City is worth a go for you. Both of these shows are short and can be easily slotted into your day, both of them look at a future where robots are a common appearance. Rain City takes a more melancholic look into the idea, whereas 100 Byou[...] looks at it through more comedic eyes.

Both of them also utilise unconventional art styles.

No words needed to tell a wonderful story. Great animation, soundtracks, nice story, expressiveness without a single word.
