Let us begin that both of these titles have a main plot point regarding spontaneous human combustion. In Promare, humans coexist to a certain degree with this and have mutated to acquire these powers while in Fire Force this is mostly seen as a bad thing that only brings destruction towards their people. Both of these shows, also have a brigade of "Firefighters" that deal with these issues, in Promare they're the Burning Rescue Fire Department while in Fire Force they're called Fire Force, hence the name.

Both of these shows have lots of action scenes and fight scenes that if you enjoyed one you will most likely enjoy the other one.

MistLiigh MistLiigh says...

The concepts of these two shows initially bear a surface-level resemblance. Fire Force may be more your cup of tea if you want a longer, more standard shounen; If you enjoy the finest of Imaishi and Trigger's off-the-wall insanity, Promare will offer more bang for your buck in just 2 hours.

The premise for both anime is so similar that it almost feels like they could be two different stories within the same universe, just with slightly different terms and rules.

FalconX578 FalconX578 says...

Fire Force and Promare are birds of a feather. Both stories are set in a world where spontaneous human combustion threatens the lives of many innocent people, and it is up to a group of firefighting individuals to save lives. While in both Fire Force and Promare, the cause of human combustion is a mystery, Fire Force focuses on a fire department whose mission is to uncover the hidden secret of human combustion, which is being kept hidden by secret organizations, scientists, and church officials alike.

While the fire department in Promare only seeks to rescue civillians, put out living fires, and occasionally fight the Mad Burnish terrorists with the help of ice guns and mechas, in Fire Force, the fire department is suited to fight Infernals, those who were victim to spontaneous human combustion. They do this with the help of many unique gadgets and weapons, and also with fire itself. There really are several similarities, and if you enjoyed Promare, then you would almost 100% enjoy Fire Force.

Both Promare and Tiger & Bunny focus the action on a single town, have an intense relationship between two men at the center of the plot, and have a lot of superpowered action that are really gorgeous to look at. They're also both just incredibly entertaining action romps.

zirkkun zirkkun says...

Both Promare and T&B have action scenes that are beautiful and entertaining with a strong cast of characters to support the story, even if the character's role is rather small on the surface. Not to mention the dynamic between Kotetsu and Barnaby has very much the same vibes as that between Galo and Lio, respectively.

Both are colorful and balls to the wall over-the-top. Get ready for a ton of mechs, satisfying, punchy animation and a whole lot of inspirational yelling about the power of believing in yourself!

rickxboy rickxboy says...

Directed by the same  director. Both shows revolve around Mecha and the power to believe in yourself. The action scenes are well pact and well-choreographed. The music is similar. Plus, Kamina and Galo have the same energy.

JacksonSehm JacksonSehm says...

Both of these movies offer a lot of the same aesthetic for being Studio Trigger/Imaishi and is enough to rec on its own.

But to take it a step further they have similar character dynamics, the music is phenomenal and their sense of galactic staging is pretty similar.

You'll fall in love with both set of characters and it's almost scary how immersed into the universe I felt

Star Driver is a bit more heady than Promare (which is a bit blunt and heavy-handed with how it deals with discrimination), but they both have beautiful and colorful art styles, fluid mech battles, a hot-blooded protagonist, a little bit of secrets and mystery, and an intense relationship between two male characters.

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled

The side story takes place in 2017 a.t.b., around the time Lelouch took on the alter-ego “Zero” and built up his “Black Knights” rebellion army. The setting is in Europe, where the Euro Universe (E.U.) allied nations are being invaded by the overwhelming forces of the Holy Britannian Empire. On the verge of defeat, the E.U. army forms a special division known as “W-O″, of which a young pilot named Akito Hyuuga is a member. Layla Malkal , a former Britannian Aristocrat comes to the E.U.'s aid, commanding the “Wyvern” Knightmare corps comprised of Japanese teenagers. They recklessly plunge into a battlefield, where the survival rate is extremely low, at about 5% only. They fight for their freedom, and for a "home" to which they can return.

Both shows feature some of the most incredible CG mech action that anime has to offer. These shows scratch a very specific itch with their kinetic fights and wild camera angles that are mesmerizing to see in action.

Promare and Akito the Exiled also both tackle discrimination as a major theme. Although tone-wise, Akito the Exiled is more serious compared to the sheer Rule of Cool Promare runs with.

Quirky characters set in a sci-fi visual joyride. Both are campy and absurd (and are in on the joke). Neither plot is super deep, but that's not what makes these films stunning.

While there are tonal differences (Gunbuster is serious and bittersweet whereas Promare is flashy and optimistic) I can't help but think that many fans would appreciate Gunbuster's clear influences on Promare.

For one thing, both anime feature a friendship with a rocky start that grows into a deep bond (perfect for mecha co-piloting!). But Promare makes a few other nods to Gunbuster: the iconic Gainax pose, of course, as well as stopping the high-adrenaline action in favor of a quieter climax stylized in black and white (with a bit of dramatic shirt removal to go along with it).

Devilman: Crybaby

Devilman: Crybaby

The protagonist Akira Fudo learns from his best friend, Ryo Asuka, that an ancient race of demons has returned to take back the world from humans. Ryo tells Akira that the only way to defeat the demons is to incorporate their supernatural powers, and suggests that he unite with a demon himself. Akira succeeds in transforming into Devilman, who possesses both the powers of a demon and the soul of a human. The battle of Devilman and Akira Fudo begins.

teashirts teashirts says...

Both anime deal with a world in which people suddenly and inexplicably gain a dangerous superatural power, leading to an apocalyptic event. In Devilman Crybaby, we see the buildup to this apocalypse; Promare deals with the long-term aftermath of such an event, thirty years later.

They touch on similar themes: the cruelty that people are capable of showing toward their fellow humans that are seen as different or dangerous, the power of the marginalized to stand up for themselves, and the value of love and hope in even the most dire of circumstances. Both are filled to the brim with intense emotions, including some wonderfuly cathartic crying scenes.

Finally, and perhaps most notably, the influence of Devilman on character dynamics like that between the protaganists of Promare can not be overstated. There's a reason Promare is one of many anime that feature a sassy, anti-authoritarian, effiminate blonde boy, his kindhearted and stubborn companion, and homoerotic subtext between them--and that reason is the original Devilman.

The most notable difference between these two anime is their tone and their conclusions: Devilman is a dark, gory, and ultimately tragic tale, whereas the violence in Promare is much more cartoony and the story ends on an optimistic high note. So if you wish Promare was more depressing and pessimistic, or if you need a balm to sooth your soul after crying your eyes out with Devilman Crybaby, look no further.

Both of these are action-packed films starring a group with superpowers. They mix the modern world with the 'supernatural', and work great as self-contained films. The plot direction is also sometimes similar. If you liked one, I highly recommend you check out the other.
