Autonomous mechanical dolls, also known as automata, work at Kuronekotei, a coffee shop that sits at the corner of the fifth district of the imperial capital. However, they were originally made as weapons for a great war that ended a few years ago. Now, they have been restored and dressed in shiny kimonos.

I have literally no idea what they were going for with this show. The tone is all over the place. The underlying story poses an interesting idea but the execution is just bad. The relationships don't feel organic and the dialogue seems unnatural. Even so, the voice actresses all did a great job with what was sub-par material at best. The characters had a lot of potential but never got properly fleshed out and their motivations never really made a lot of sense. All in all, a waste of really good potential in both story and characters. Unfortunately, can not recommend because of how muddled the tone is and how poorly a really interesting idea for a story is presented. I wonder if it's just a bad adaptation and the manga is better... because I certainly would like a better told story with the theme presented here. Weird tangent to go on at the end here but I've been bothered by this for a very long time so just gonna put it out there: What is anime's deal with animal sounds? Why do they make the VAs do them in every single cod-damn show? Feels so unnatural and makes all the animals seem fake. Might as well not bother including them.
