In order to qualify to be the Queen, Chocolat and Vanilla are sent to the Human World to improve their magic; the assessment is based on capturing the most 'hearts' of the people in the Human World. Chocolat's upfront behavior was popular in the Magical Kingdom, but in the Human World, people prefer the personality of her newly formed rival, Vanilla. Now, Chocolat must work extra hard to live up to her mother's failure -- all while repressing her desire to whup everyone's butt!

Anime about girls with magical powers are a dime a dozen, but every so often one comes along with a bit more dynamism and charm than usual. This is true for both Sugar Sugar Rune and Pretty Cure, two eminently watchable anime series that deal with two very similar pairs of friends, consisting of one sporty and extrovert girl (Chocolat and Nagisa, respectively) and one shy and bookish girl (Vanilla and Honoka, respectively).

In both anime, the friends are tested and their friendship defined and strengthened by the tests -- and beyond showing their deepening ties, the story also shows the individual ability of the girls to grow to meet their challenges.

DGFischer DGFischer says...

I was thinking along the lines of Mahotsukai Precure, linking magic use and two inseparable friends, but Pretty Cure is a better fit.  The friends Chocolate and Vanilla are rivals, but it seems at times that Vanilla would gladly throw the contest for Choclate.  Diversity of personalities are prominent too.  But SSR has the wrinkle of having these shy-assertive pairings thrive in different worlds.  Chocolate would be a dream girl in the Magical World, but meek and dainty Vanilloa thrives in the Real World where boys flock to such as her.  With Nagissa and Honaka, it is the range of jock and science nerd which the Pretty Cure must overcome to save the world from the powers of darkness.

Obviously, the main connection between TMM and Pretty Cure is that they are both of the magical girl genre, but there are many more similarities between these two anime. The character development is very similar in both, and the action scenes take on very similar layouts. The plot of both shows is also similar in that both teams of protagonists are attempting to stop an outside influence from destroying and/or taking over the world.

tevinskii tevinskii says...

The storyline is similiar, fighting aliens to save the world.

the humour used is also very similiar :)

Wedding Peach

Wedding Peach

But one day, Momoko and her friends are attacked by a mysterious man called Pluie who attempts to steal Momoko's ring, a gift from her mother. Another strange man named Limone intervenes, giving Momoko a magical item known as the 'Saint Miroir'. Using this, Momoko is granted the power to transform into the angel of love - Wedding Peach! With Pluie and his minions attempting to destroy all the love in the world, Momoko frequently has to call upon her powers to save the day. Suddenly, her life isn't so normal anymore!

Both animes are about female fighters fighting for justice. Although the picture is quite different, it has similar contents: transformation (make up), special items (cards, wedding jewel), theme (love and justice), secial power, etc. If you liked one, you will probably like the other.

Shugo Chara!

Shugo Chara!

Hinamori Amu is a stylish punk rock girl who is liked and feared by her peers, but there's just one problem: she's actually a shy and quiet girl who can't seem to drop her self-fabricated facade! But when Amu finds three eggs in her bed, she had no idea her life would change forever. Out of the eggs pop Ran, Miki and Su, Amu's Guardian Charas; these being represent parts of Amu that she wishes she could be, even allowing Amu to transform into those parts at will! Now, with pressure from the other Guardians (including her crush, Hotori) to join their midst, dark sides of the psyche known as X Eggs to seal, and nefarious forces after a wish-granting egg known as the embryo, Amu's life has officially become more complicated!

Nohansen Nohansen says...

Angelic Layer and Pretty Cure are spins on two anime genres: namely "collectible fighting monsters" and "magical girls". Both series may seem typical on the surface but in actuality are non-standard examples of their genres, especially when it comes to action sequences. Battles in Pretty Cure and Angelic Layer are physically punishing as the heroines engage their opponents in hand-to-hand combat, rather than rely on special attacks or mystical artifacts like in other shows.

Both series are aimed at young audiences but neither is pandering or condescending, so older viewers can enjoy them as well.

Pretty Cure and Fushigiboshi no Futagohime are really similar in many ways. Apart from the same genre, both have two main heroines who are trying to save the world with special powers and both have cute little creatures with the main characters, and as time goes on, the two plots resemble each other more and more.

Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo: Amazing Twins

Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo: Amazing Twins

Amane Todoroki is a young girl who is straightforward but also unthinking. She will try her very best in everything and say, "I don't know how to answer you if you ask me whether this can be done. I just believe it can. If not, then nothing will get started." She easily gets stuck in her thinking, but she can also get easily moved at something small and start crying.

Both shows are primarily lighthearted shows including villains controlling large goofy monsters. The protagonist in Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo is an ESP power weilding girl with a ghost-twin who augments her sister. Hiding these powers they fight powerful enemies after something valuable. All these aspects share strong similarities with the Pretty Cure series, especially if you see the stuffed doll as an equivalent to the mascots in the Pretty Cure series.

In terms of differences, the most obvious one is the difference in size and the resulting room for more plot and character development. Other than that, both shows are shows which are well suited for a young public which loves to see a pair (or group) of girls fighting big monsters and winning over everyone with the power of friendship.
