Pet Shop of Horrors and xxxHoLiC are one-shots with events that are out of the norm. The main characters have a mysterious but overpowering personality to them, and they're never predictable; while the supporting characters always give the comic relief. There's always a good twist, turn, and surprise in the two series.

SingerOfWhiteLine SingerOfWhiteLine says...

Both series tell about shops granting wishes, but in different ways. While Yuuko's shop takes symbolic payment and things that might come in handy, Count D's shop takes real money, sometimes sweets, and a list of rules about the purchased pets. Also both series are quite serious (pardon my pun), but still have time to be funny. If you want to see what will happen to one who has his wish granted, you should see both.

lovelyduckie lovelyduckie says...

Both shows feature the owners of shops of a very mystical nature. Each show may be broken up into mini stand-alone stories of each customer, this keeps both stories fresh and interesting. Both owners sell wishes, however, the wishes sold may turn out badly depending on the nature of the customer and their ability to resist temptation. The difference in these two shop owners? Yuko's customers may meet a tragic end, however it is typically not an ending brought about by Yuko herself. Count D on the other hand may use his customer's own weaknesses to bring about a quicker more tragic demise.

Kari5 Kari5 says...

Both of these shows are similar because they involve one-shot stories of people trying to solve their problems by visiting the shops in these animes. Also, in both something must be sacrificed in order to recieve what you're looking for, or face the consequences.

foureyedalice foureyedalice says...

xxxHOLiC and Pet Shop of Horrors both tell stories of supernatural wish fulfillment, usually gone awry. Though xxxHOLiC features regular characters, and overarching story and some lightness/humor, while Pet Shop's has a strictly episodic horror format, they both present creative stories of what happens when metaphysical power meets human frailty. If you liked the 'twilight zone'-like irony and creepiness of Pet Shop, xxxHOLiC delivers it and more.  Likewise, if you enjoyed the one-shot, 'supernatural elements in the real world' stories in xxxHOLiC, you should give Pet Shop a try.

stingreis stingreis says...

the art style in both these anime's are the same, along with the mysterious uncharacteristic tone the main character portrays.. along with a supporting "everyday joe" character that see's the everyday wierd occurances that revolve around the life of the main character...

Thus, if you enjoyed one, you'll enjoy the other

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

In these shops, you can find whatever you're looking for, and as long as you follow the instructions, you'll be alright. But break a compact with either shop owner, and you're in trouble.

Airotia Airotia says...

Both are mostly episodic in regards to the events going on, but manage to connect the events to main characters that grant almost genie-like wishes. Most episodes focus on the outcomes of granting these wishes, whether its the consequences or the main characters going out of their way to help the customer. The shop keepers in both are casual, friendly, but don't really care what happens to their customers after the transaction.

Bestanimeserie Bestanimeserie says...

Both shows deal with the supernatural and have some mythology themes to them. They are also both episodic but feature an overall storyline, they also deal with wishes although in different ways and both have catastrophic turnouts for said customers if they do not abide by the rules given to them

Symka Symka says...

Both involve gothic elements, and include dark shops. Both visually stimulating, and enriching imagery, and unique characters.

Very strange characters abound in these titles, along with a detached and episodic kind of plot. Each new episode brings a new set of problems and players... although Hundred Stories is more linear following the path of a single group. They also share a very dark atmosphere, offering up some moral value after each tale of horror and intrigue.

sublime sublime says...

Both Pet Shop and Hundred Stories are dark, moody and choc full of horror. Perfect for those of you who love watching anime that plays with the human psyche.

sothis sothis says...

Exploring the dark part of the human soul: a similar occurance in both Pet Shop of Horrors and Hundred Stories. Besides that, these are both extremely kickass series, both filled with horror, despair, and the darkness of humanity. I highly think if you like one, you'd like the other.

Quickben Quickben says...

Imagine Pet Shop of Horrors with its anti hero but make it darker and more macabre, gore-filled, and occult, and you'll have Hundred Stories. It's a must see if you liked Pet Shop of Horrors.

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

Journies into the darkness prevalent in the human soul, Pet Shop of Horrors and Requiem From The Darkness are dark, bleak, and horror filled series. Individuals in each tend to be punished for their wicked ways in grotesque, but ironic ways.

Any viewer that enjoyed the dark storytelling and atmosphere of one should be right at home watching the other.

AirCommodore AirCommodore says...

Both are episodic horror series with great atmosphere. The individual stories included tend to follow the same pattern over and over again, but if you enjoy that story, you'll likely enjoy the rest.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these series revolve around humanity's darker side. Whether it's a trio of spirit-hunters or Count D and his pets, those that dabble in darkness had best watch their step. Both series all feature the straight-man protagonist that is made aware of all the bizarre happenings around him.

Your punishment will not be forgotten; if you sin, there are people out there that will make sure you'll pay the price! Both Pet Shop of Horrors and Hell Girl provide a few examples of the rotten parts of the human character.

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

These two series feature a mysterious supernatural entity that preys on human flaws. Both Pet Shop of Horrors and Jigoku Shoujo deal with passing judgment and convey a very dark and depressing mood through the anguish-filled situations that desperate people have to face. They both delve into terrible moral quandaries and impose contracts that bind the contractors with the terrible consequences of their choices. In these series the supernatural elements serve as a device to exploring the heavy toll that certain decisions entail, blending insanity with a brooding feeling of hopelessness.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Buying a pet from Count D can be equated to making a contract with Ai Enma. Both anime deal with the idea of getting your "just deserts".

deideiblueeyez deideiblueeyez says...

Pet Shop of Horrors and Jigoku Shoujo (or Hell Girl) are similar in a few ways that make them seem to be running in the same vein: Both Petshop of Horrors and Jigoku Shoujo answers the pleas and calls of ordinary humans for their whims and desires; for Petshop, it's exotic animals, for Jigoku Shoujo, it's the tool (moreso the power) needed to exact revenge on someone. But both come at a price, which silly humans, being self-absorbed and none too bright, do not consider until the last dire second, or are unaware that their actions will bite them in the butt down the road. Both the main characters directly ( Ai of Jigoku Shoujo) or indirectly (Count D of Petshop of Horrors) serve the just desserts for the selfish and needlessly cruel people who cross their paths, and are like true Messengers of Death: Impartial to the point of amorality; Ai and Count D both do what is asked of them, nothing more and nothing less. If things do not "go as planned" for the one asking for help, then tough cookies.

Rntt89 Rntt89 says...

In both series we see people's worst sides, how they can be opportunistic and selfish and they make a deal to satisfy their greediness. They also show that some of your actions will have consequences and that people must be ready to face them. They both follow a similar pattern of selling desires or revenge to people. If you enjoyed the one it's likely you'll enjoy the other too.

Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror

Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror

The dark and brooding Ayakashi is composed of three horror stories: the narration of a young woman named Oiwa who was abandoned and betrayed by the one she truly loved, leading her to curse all who stood in her way; a story of two star-crossed lovers – a human and a forgotten god – and their struggle to have a future together; and the tale of an evil and malicious demon who is haunting and murdering a family for unknown purposes. Though different in animation style and tone, each story shares a similar theme: the darkness of the human heart.

sothis sothis says...

Pet Shop of Horrors and Ayakashi both showcase the darkness of the human soul, and the horrors that await us. While Pet Shop looks very outdated compared to the newer Ayakashi, both have the same tone and feel, and in general you'd like them both if you are into horror.

Ran Ran says...

Both anime relate horrific stories. Ayakashi takes more time per story, spreading each of them over 3 or 4 episodes, while Pet Shop of Horrors has a more standardised format and shows more modern horror compared to the old Japan and swordsmen stories in Ayakashi; however, the mood and development of the stories are quite alike and both give a nice thrilling feeling. if you liked one, you're surely going to like the other too.

EnseiChan EnseiChan says...

Same feel, similar themes, similar animation even as far as I can recall, just that Pet shop... has slightly more of a 'western' take on mythical creatures.

Taybella99 Taybella99 says...

The watching experience was very similar between the two as long as you can get over the differnece of historical Japan vs like 90's America. Ayakashi also tells 3 different stories over 11 episodes, while Pet Shop of Horrors has a new customer each of the 4 episodes. They both seemed to delve into the darker side of the human psyche, but that just pulled you further into the stories.

Pet Shop of Horrors and Curse of Kazuo Umezu aren't identical, that's for sure - but they're both good and classic horror that will intrigue you. Both are introduced as cautionary tales, though Curse isn't quite as much as it seems to be at first glance.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

No one should mess with the supernatural lightly as it's a dangerous world that will bite you if you're not carefully. Both these anime have that theme, people getting involoved in supernatural sitations they are not prepared for and then paying the price.

Both anime focus on the psychological part of horrer. Instead of the monster coming after the victums, the victums blindly go to the monster.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these anime have a similar message: Don't mess with the supernatural. With horror, mystery, and older animation giving you the heebie-jeebie's, these two anime are very similar. If you liked one, give the other a shot.

Both gerneraly have the same vibe of human flaw. Each have humans with personality, or social problems that draws a dark influence to them, eventually giving them the power to destroy themselves with there own devices.

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

Both Boogiepop Phantom and Pet Shop of Horrors depict the devastating effects of despair, and the grievous consequences that letting go of reality carries. These series feature highly troubled individuals who try to cope with the pressure of emotionally-taxing situations, and fail. In both, a supernatural entity has a highly dubious role in this process of mental disintegration. Boogiepop Phantom has a convoluted plot while Pet Shop of Horrors plays with a simple narrative frame; but they both explore the dark aspects of the human soul and do it with enthusiasm.

Both of these OVA's episodes are comprised of self-contained character studies that repeatedly show a general corruption of the human soul. Both have fairly unimpressive animation, but make up for this with clever writing and the natural appeal of the macabre.

Both Mononoke and Pet Shop of Horrors give a glimpse of the japanese folklore through short horrific stories. Both anime also follow a guideline in the way the stories take place, although diferent for the two series, it gives a pattern to the plot that doesn't however take the suspense away, always making us wonder what will go wrong, and what will be the consequences of it.

Both Mononoke and Petshop have main characters that are very charismatic and mysterious. They know almost everything from the beginningbut hide in the shadows and wait for the truth to reveal itself.
