These two anime have avery similar feel, especially towards the end. It's hard to explain without spoiling anything, but cute cuddley sureal pets and the humans they love are part of the course for both these shows.

Both anime are reality warping mind-trips. They feel alike, but tell two different stories. But somehow, they share similarities. Try them out.

Want a mystery that will leave you shocked and confused... Both these anime have a MindF*ckish element to them, making it hard to predict what will happen in the animes. Paranoia Agent however, is short and is as much as a thriller as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai but both are very good and deserve mentioning

Made in the same year, these two shows have a very similar animation style and feel. Both seem a little out-of-this-world and have a strange aspect of violence. The violence and explicit content of Gantz is much more, but both are dark and mature.

Both are psychological and have a lot to do with how people percieve reality. To each part of Denpa Teki there is a mystery/investigation element which escalates into a psychological drama with elements of violence thrown in... which is a lot like the formula for Paranoia Agent, except more centered on a small group of people, whereas Paranoia Agent shows the reaction and involvement of the Shounen Bat cases in a wide area.

One summer, a series of mysterious and untimely fatalities begins to plague the small rural town. However, as the deaths begin to pile up, more people begin to wonder just what is behind this sudden epidemic; could it have anything to do with the bizarre Kirishiki family that recently moved to the village?

both deal with paranormal happenings(though one is set in the city and the other in the countryside), a slowly brooding mystery, darker color palletes, lots of different mini character story arcs which help the main story arcs of the series or humanizes the characters.

Mushishi

Mushishi

It isn't unusual for a person to feel that the world around them is strange and has unexpected secrets lying just beyond their sight. However, for most people this is just an occasional sensation that greets them upon awakening or chases them into sleep. For the mushi researcher Ginko, it isn't a feeling at all; it is a knowledge which guides his travels and motivates his life. Found in the cracks between what is conceivable and what is not, are the varied life forms collectively known as mushi. They surround us and affect us, but their intensely different nature makes them unrecognizable to most. Ginko brings these life forms into perspective for the lives of those most affected and most in need of an explanation.

Mushishi and Paranoia Agent both do an excellent job of offering stand alone episodes that are someone held together. For Mushishi that bonding agent is the mushi. For Paranoia Agent that bonding agent is lil slugger/ shounen bat. Both shows are also slow and prefer to usually tell the narrative more subtly with key music and visuals. They both require you to think.

It's for those who enjoy anime that doesn't give you all the answers, has a fairly grim view of society, dives deep into the hidden supernatural, and doesn't flinch from violence.
