Let me preface this review by saying that I'm a huge fan of One Piece. I'm up to date with the manga, watched over 800 episodes of the anime, and watch basically every movie or OVA of the franchise. But while I very much loved the last 3 movies (especially Strong World and Film Z), Stampede was honestly a tad disappointing. Story/characters I mean, it is very much a "fanservice" movie (not in the erotic sense, mind you) and while that would normally be perfect for me, the execution just didn't do it for me. There are dozens of old characters who return to the screen, such as the entire Worst Generation or the Strawhat's allies from Dressrosa. But the number of returning characters is just too much imo, and it negatively effects the screentime for most characters. And the new characters are mostly uninteresting. Only the main antagonist is memorable because he's cool for like 10 minutes, and then the movie decides to make him a lame nuisance for 45 minutes. The story is kind of lackluster too. We start off with a scenario where everyone gathers for a pirate festival with a race, which makes you expect a scenario like the 4th movie (Dead End Adventure). Sadly the race is done after like 30 minutes, leaving an hour of fighting the same guy. (Because yes, this guy doesn't have any subordinates. That's his shtick.) The subplot/side mission some of the Strawhats go off on, is mostly useless as well. Other than that, there is some good comedy and enjoyable character interactions to be found. And the idea of the "treasure" they find is pretty cool as well. Sound and animation Sound-wise, the One Piece anime has always done well, and Stampede is no exception While the new music for the movie isn't as memorable as the most iconic songs of the anime, it still has some great stuff that fits with the scenes. Animation is also very good - it's honestly always a nice surpirse to get some good animation for OP (although the recent movies have done very well for this). But then there's the CGI for a certain important part, and that's just... eeeh. I'd say it passes as barely acceptable, but when put in contrast with the traditional animation for everything else... it just didn't fit. Overall It's a movie aimed at fans of One Piece, but the fanservice isn't handled all that well. Story could've been handled better, with a larger part before the "big fight". Production values are great for the most part but get dragged down somewhat due to bad CGI. It's enjoyable for fans of the franchise, but I'd start watching with limited expectations.
