Non Non Biyori: Okinawa e Ikukoto ni Natta - Reviews

Talk about the Lifestyles of the Weird and Backwards.  I had finished watching the 2018 movie NNB: Vacation.  Then I found a website that had the NNB OVA's (HIDIVE has the seasons and the movie, but not the OVA's ... BOOO!!!).  I watched the OVA that represented the last offering of the 2013 first season.  Talk about a bigtime half-dose of déjà vu!

Non Non Biyori: Okinawa e Ikukoto ni Natta presented itself as the thirteenth episode of the first run of NNB.  But it wasn't anything like the twelve episodes of the series.  It was essentially the first portion of Vacation, from Suguru's winning the Okinawa trip (for four people ... so I'm still wondering how the gang of eight got to go on this vacay) to the plane taking off for Okinawa.  There was the material in between, practicing airplane etiquette, figuring out what to pack, hitting the convenience store for those essential items to pack.

That's when it hit me.  There was little of the scenery with which we come to know Non Non Biyori.  The settings were the department store, Hotaru's house, the convenience store, the airport.  The customary shot of Gu the tanuki eating from his plate of veggies.  Very little splendor of the natural world other than the final shot of flying over the ocean.  Blue is nice, but ...

I've always taken OVA to be animation experiments.  Take the cast and try out a new concept.  Okay, but introducing a storyline which one will not see the completion to for another four years taxes one's patience, even though that is what one must expect in the world of anime.  Silver Link does excellent work with their Non Non Biyori franchise.  Better than standard technique (though this was lacking in this OVA).  Great music and sound (though the music of Vacation was superior ... even though it was tedious mood music).  If one was to grade the material of Non Non Biyori, it should get A's.  This OVA, maybe a B or C.  Let's just call it a low point in the world of Asahigaoka and move on.
