The Glass Mask is a masterpiece made by a perfectionist. It is by far the #1 anime on my list. It will grip you starting with episode 1 (just try to not show emotion at the swim scene) and will not let you go.

The stories are similar in how characters gradually become  world-class performers.

Watch the OVAs as well. :)

Even if the plot seems to be different, the hints on both of them are alike. Put a girl with determination and a senpai with really high personality and you will have either of them.

With funny moments and tension ones too, you will enjoy these almost matura romantic drama.

airyfairy airyfairy says...

Both series have influences of comedy/romance. The relation between the main characters are similar. There is the harsh authorative senpai and the barrier breaking girl. His words and recognition have stronger impact on her than any others' and he secretely admire her and her work/music.

norco norco says...

I found the couples in both of these series to be very similar. They both are teacher/student type relationships. They also both contain excellent comedy. The lead female and male characters are also very similar.

Do you love anime which can take a seemingly dry topic such as classical music and breathe life into it with a riveting story and memorable characters? Believe it or not, Nodame Cantabile and Hikaru no Go share exactly this in common. In fact, Hikaru no Go was responsible in large part for the resurgence of youth interest in the game of Go. Want to know how it was done? Give the anime a try, it's well worth it!

Both of these series deal with classical music, Nodame Cantabile with the European style and Nitaboh with the traditional Japanese style. They are about accomplishing your dreams of music through hard work and dedication, and never deviating from the course that you have chosen no matter how difficult it is.

The only obvious similarity between Gauche the Cellist and Nodame is that they both involve western classical music with some adequately accurate animation when it comes to the "instrumentation", if you will.

hyperactve hyperactve says...

Well, if you enjoyed the music in Nodame Cantabille, you like the 1940s Tom and Jerry's music, and choreography. Then your next stop should definitely be Gauche the Cellist. Remember, this recommendation does not take the romance of Nodame Cantabille in consideration.

I'm kind of surprised that I'm the first one to make this recomendation. Both series focus on the interactions of a guy and a girl going through school though Nodame is college while Kare Kano is high school so Nodame is a little more on the serious side overall but I have to say that both series are hilarious. They both have their darker moments too. It's a good mix and I have to say fans of one should give the other a shot.

Another similarity is both series' two main characters. Their relationships sort of start off shaky and they don't exactly get along with each other, but they eventually get it together. When I watched Nodame it reminded me of watching Kare Kano back in the day.

Tokuwa Tokuwa says...

Both series tell a unique romance between two strong-willed, talented and contrasting individuals. Most of all they share this indiscribable atmosphere of "elitism meets chaos"

In Kare Kano we have a developing romance between a wild but socialy aware girl and a seemingly perfect and orderly male, while in Nodame Cantabile we have a just as perfect by-the-rules-living lead who then meets his complete opposite - a chaotic, borderline-insane but talented girl.

While in Kare Kano both characters' talent is their pure intelligence and wit, Nodame Cantabile's characters are musically talented instead.

I think what ties the series together is also the intensity of it's personalities, both Chiaki and Arima are men with character and wit, willing to state their wishes when needed. Both seem plagued with their own perfection.

The ladies of both series, on the other hand, strive for self-recognition and expression of their own personality - it's about finding yourself, being true to yourself, accepting your faults while still trying to become a better person.

Anyway, it's these paralells that make me think Nodame and Kare Kano share the same "Karma" - if you enjoyed one, I definately recommend trying the other. ^_^

With a slice of life look at the world of students, aiming for some goal in their life that they still have no idea of where they are heading is just one of the striking similiarities between these series. Indeed, they do not end there, with the same likeable characters, outstanding music and animation, Nodame Cantabile and Honey and Clover are one of the best combinations going. A simple turning point in the series leads everyone down their own paths that make for some great viewing.

teganc teganc says...

These shows have the same sort of pace and comedy, and they each have some aspect of romance. Nodame and Morita are similarly wacky characters who are both artistic geniuses, and most of the show takes place within an art/music college environment. Basically if you liked one show and are looking for one in the same sort of vein, I think these two shows are the most similar of everything else listed.

Kimi ni Todoke - From Me To You

Kimi ni Todoke - From Me To You

Sawako Kuronuma is just like any other high school girl who wants to make friends and be useful. The only problem is she bears a worrying resemblance to Sadako from 'The Ring!' Because of her reputation, people are not only terrified of her, but small dogs even bark in fear at her presence; in fact, the only person in school who will talk to her is the lively class hottie, Kazehaya. As the pair spends more time together, Kazehaya slowly begins to bring Sawako out of her shell and soon their feelings for each other develop further. Though with her crippling insecurities, lack of social skills, and a series of cruel rumors and misunderstandings, it seems that Sawako's dream of a normal life won’t be quite so easy to obtain.

While they seem different both in setting ( college vs high school ) in characters ( strict guy + cheerful girl vs cheerful guy + gloomy girl) and  even in the designated age of viewers (josei vs shoujo) they still should appeal to the same kind of audience.

Both of those shows are lighthearted tales of growing up, and finding friendship/love. Both maintain the balance between the comedy, romance and "heartwarming". Both shows due to beatiful animation and good ost create a really warm mood, and easily bring smiles to viewers face. If you like one check the other.

The feeling of the anime, the slow building of friendships, the funniness of their quirks, all of that is very similar to Nodame no Cantabile. The quirkiness of the lead female is there, though in different ways. I heartily agree with this reccomendation!

The story is the same: a couple helps each other find their way. Nodame has older characters and is also very funny, but both can loosen a happy tear at the end. Here's your chance to compare growing up 1990 and 2001!

both anime is about a gifted heroine and meeting and helping interesting people as she goes along with life.

Aro Aro says...

Although they don't seem to have much in common, both are about lovable, klutzy girls with a lot of hidden talent the story of how they realize their abilities and follow their dreams.

The story lines are similar despite the two fields of the culinary and musical arts being very different. Both of the main characters  meet people who help them realize their dreams and teach them how to get ahead in that field. They both even wind up in Paris => Another interesting similarity is the level of detail both anime go into with regards to their respective field. After watching Yummeiro Patissiere you start seeing chocolate in a whole new light, and after watching Nodame Cantabile, music suddenly seems much more interesting as well.

If you liked one, you're sure to enjoy the other.
