While the over-dramatic sad story is still a good watch and has a happy ending. The story is based on French author Hector Malot's novel Sans Famille in France and is mostly about the character's struggle to succeed and survive life.

Many of the events seem to happen due to the fact that there were no cell phones at this time, so you can see how people live by then, never knowing if they will meet again.

The animation is from the 1970's but still has a unique style that makes it look almost like art pieces panning on the screen. I think its quite unique in this sense, making it interesting to look at. The sound (I watched mostly in Spanish) is great, has great songs for kids, very contagious.

The characters are likable and they are what makes this story shine, looking through all the amazing personalities and how they deal with their struggles.

Overall, I think this anime has aged well, it transports you to the time of the events in old Europe, a time where society was way different of what we know today, but never the less, we can identify with this time & places, stuck in a time bubble, but yet familiar with our own struggles.

8/10 story
6/10 animation
8/10 sound
8/10 characters
8/10 overall
