I picked Key the Metal Idol as the series to recommend to Evangelion lovers for its dark style of animation, human - robot relationship, rather complex plot, seriousness of the story and moody atmosphere maintained within the series. These are things shared by both series, so if you liked one you'd probably like the other.

Very similar series in the vein that children are entrusted with the lives of a whole bunch of people. Meanwhile, they have to deal with being children with a huge responsibility and little time to grow up like normal kids. Don't expect them to be extremely similar in the "thinking for yourself" area, as one is much more straightforward and easy to understand than the other. (You've probably got a pretty good idea about which is which after the first episodes)

Armitage III is a series you would want to watch if you want to see a sci-fi thriller that shows its own brand of the future of humanity. Not to spoil the plot but it's about the ethics of cyborgs and human like robots. Although you may get an incomplete feeling after watching Armitage III from the many scenes cut in Polymatrix, you'll experience a pioneering movie with style that was produced in America.

I don't know if you really can compare these two with each other. But like tank police NGE gives a nice future setting. Evangelion gives a much more in depth vision on the characters too. Ofcourse some action and destruction is invloved also.

Evangelion is the quintessential mecha anime, (dont start about gundam) so if it was the 98's of Patlabor that turned your crank, then your set. On the other hand if it is saving the world as a theme, then your still set. Yup no downsides. However, I guess it depends on how you feel about shinji... but even if you dont like him (dont get me wrong... i think the characters in eva are fine... but ppl always whine so...) you still should watch. Patlabour has a fairly 'light' feel, so a nice/welcome contrast to eva.

If you delight in giant figures battling each other to save the world, yes these two anime are both for you. They are closely related in genre - heavy mecha. Both also have plenty of angst and drama.

The parallels between Eva and Virus Buster Serge have nothing to do with the plot. Rather, they both are gritty, intense, and a bit confusing in their premise, and are very dark at the same time. Don't expect to understand everything, but be confident that the overall story will be interesting enough. If you liked one, you'd probably like the other.
