Both of these series feature a world where a group of mysterious, super-powerful aliens beings are invading the earth and causing massive destruction, but humanity is fighting back with giant mecha which appear to be at least partly organic and have special relationships with their chosen pilots.

The children eagerly sign the contract, name their new weapon Zearth, and must now take turns to pilot it; but the ‘game' is in fact all too real and the consequences of battle become the stuff of nightmares. What happens when you put a bunch of struggling teens in a giant robot and force them to protect the Earth from monsters? Depressing stuff happens, that's what. Both Bokurano and NGE show how brutal and emotionally taxing it would be to carry the weight of the world on you shoulder, especially if you're just a kid going through puberty. These series explore what goes on in the mind of our protagonists and how they're affected by the task at hand.

Okay, the first question may be: why do I suggest manga instead of anime version of Nausicaä. Well, that's because it is way deeper and more complicated. So, if you enjoyed Evangelion I recommend to read this manga, though the movie still is fantastic.
