Paniponi Dash! and Negima!?, like the similar anime Lucky Star and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, are part of a current fad in anime which requires a great deal of anime experience and cultural ballast from the viewer. They are anime made for fans, not really for the general public (though of course, their appeal is wider than merely the fan audience).

With ubiquitous "in-joke" blackboard writings and recurring verbal references, these anime demand a lot of the viewer, to achieve full effect (though you can just shut off that part of your brain and watch them for sheer madcap fun). But if one of these is your thing, then it's likely that you'll enjoy the other, too.

Though both Pani Poni Dash and Mahou Sensei Negima are comedies, their style of humour is slightly different. However, both series feature a child teaching a class of students much older than themselves. Also in both cases the students adore their teacher and they go on various wacky adventures. Also both are creations from Shaft, so if you liked the bright visual style of one, you will enjoy the other.

Both Paniponi Dash! and Negima!? are comedies based around the same type of setup, where a kid teaches a class of students. The style in which both are presented is also very similar to each other. Both have running gags throghout and jokes within the background such as writing on blackboards.

They do however differ in some key points, such as Negima!? being more magical orientated and brings a different sort of humour with it over Paniponi Dash!

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei

Life is simply not worth living for down and out school teacher Itoshiki Nozomu. He has no hope of progress, no prospect of promotion, no chance at happiness… he is in despair! Even his name spells 'zetsubou' – 'despair', when compressed. But when the time comes to end it all, Itoshiki's attempted suicide on the first day of the new school year is foiled by relentlessly positive Fuura Kafuka. This saves Itoshiki long enough to meet his new class, and the quirky range of students under his care. Will Itoshiki Nozomu depress his students with his anguish? Or will Fuura show Zetsubou-sensei the joys of life and hope?

Layered with innumerable in-jokes and tailored to appeal to the fans Negima!? and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei are part of the current fad for anime that speak directly to the more knowledgeable anime fans. Sharing the ubiquitous "in-joke" blackboard writings that are also a mainstay of Paniponi Dash!, and with the same constant verbal references as Lucky Star, these anime practically require a college-level course in Japanese popular culture and anime to understand. But if one of these is your thing, then it's likely that you'll enjoy the others, too.

Lucky Star

Lucky Star

In present day Japan, the life of a school girl is never dull. The easily-bored Konata never finds time to study because of her otaku habits, which frustrates hard-working Kagami to no end. On the other hand, laid-back Tsukasa always manages to go with the flow, while Miyuki is concerned with keeping her status as resident know-it-all. Join these four girls as they muse and meander their way through everyday events such as eating chocolate cones, doing homework, gaming, and trips to the beach galore.

Both Negima!? and Lucky Star are fast-paced and stuffed full of in-jokes and quickfire verbal and visual references, demanding a lot of background knowledge from the viewer. While it is possible to enjoy either without the anime experience and cultural ballast, these are definitely a bonus to the viewers.

Love Hina and Mahou Sensei Negima's manga versions are by the same artist. You'll see the familiar animation styles. Both are harem (one man, multiple women) and have the same kind of humor. Going from one to another will hardly be a difficult transition.

Ultra Maniac

Ultra Maniac

Sakura Nina, a magic girl from the Magic Kingdom, comes to the human world to continue her training. It would have been a simple scenario, if not for the fact that Nina's magic skills are subpar at best. Nina and her best friend Ayu subsequently find themselves turning normal high school life into crazy adventures, day after day, with a magical twist. But as time goes on, there are questions that must be answered -- why is Nina really in the human world? And why is her childhood friend, a black magic user named Maya, in the human world as well?

Little boys and big shoes; Negima and Hunter X Hunter focus on boys starting out on their lifelong adventures. Dealing with ever increasing dangers through grit, determination, and the ever-present helping hand, and gaining an ever-increasing following behind them by personality alone, they never go without a friend. Good fun, and endearing; these are both anime you'll want to enjoy.

Student Council's Discretion

Both these shows are fast-paced, self-aware, self-deprecating, and self-indulgent, though Seitokai more so on every count.  Both have harem elements but are not predominantly harems shows in the typical sense.  The big difference is that Negima is adventure oriented and plot driven while Seitokai is about school life and episodic.  Seitokai is the better of the two by far, but if you liked the pace and humor of either then the other is at least worth trying.

But as dark forces converge on the school, will this proclaimed "bastard teacher" reveal his true clout as a magician?
