PSYCHO-PASS

PSYCHO-PASS

In the future, a system called Sibyl presides over the country and provides order to every facet of life. It dictates which job fields citizens should go into based on aptitude tests, and can even read each resident's mental state and predict which ones are likely to commit crimes in the future. Fresh from exams, Akane Tsunemori is beginning her career as an Inspector, a specialized police officer who works to apprehend these latent criminals and stop crimes before they happen. But not all that get caught are eliminated or jailed, some join the police force as Enforcers to provide insight into criminals’ minds, and Akane is warned not to get too close to them, as they're considered little more than hunting dogs. Though skeptical of this advice, and Sibyl's judgement, Akane is determined to work together with her Enforcers to protect the peace of her city and its inhabitants.

In each of these shows, a sociopath who not only commits murder himself but also drives other people to the same is hunted by someone who lost everything and devotes everything to the hunt. If you enjoy thiis dynamic and psychological interplay, then both of these shows are for you.

I'm surprised Psycho-pass/Monster hasn't been recommended by anyone yet, when both animes share the same themes, that are: the value of life, equality, and the responsibilty of making choices. You'll find yourself asking the same questions recurringly; What is evil? What is good? And where does justice find itself in between these seemingly bipolar concepts?

The animes are cast in different settings. Monster takes place in post cold war Germany and has a doctor as a protagonist. Psycho-pass takes place in an alternative future and has a cop as the lead protagonist. Post cold war Germany in Monster is pretty much authoritarian, and the alternative future in Psycho-pass is representative democracy at its worst.

The animes are similar in their antagonist and themes. The antagonist in both animes are in short, psychopaths who have seen the darkerst glooms of society and find joy in watching people suffer from having to make confilicting choices. The themes are as I have mentioned, the question of what consists as evil, as good, or justice.

While the two may have completely different genres, they certainly are both seinen shows. Both series are long character-driven series that give side-characters backstories which will usually change your view on them. Space Brothers has comedy and sci-fi while Monster has thriller and mystery. Still, if you like one of these series I'd highly recommend you to try the other.

Even though both anime are very different in their genre and story telling, they have some similarities too.First would the be the very realistic animation - no rainbow color hair or any fantasy.  Everything sown in both anime seem very realistic - being a detective involved in a murderer case or being an astronaut, training and going to space. Even the side stories and secondary characters have a big role to play and gives the realism feeling to it. People in the story, no matter how small their role can be, have their own lives and problems, but they just let you connect with the story more. Good and detailed animation, some of the places in both anime are real and you can visit them and see the actual view.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The foundation of alchemy is based on the law of equivalent exchange; you cannot produce something from nothing. As such, alchemy is bound by one taboo - human transmutation. Four years ago two young brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, broke this taboo when they tried to resurrect their dead mother. During the process Al's body disintegrated and Ed lost his leg. In a desperate attempt to prevent his brother from disappearing completely, Ed sacrificed one of his arms so he could affix Al's soul to a suit of armor. When his missing limbs are replaced by auto mail parts, Ed bears the name of the Fullmetal Alchemist - the youngest ever State Alchemist and dog of the military. Now, alongside his brother, Ed uses his status within the military to attempt to find any way that he can return their bodies back to their original state.

Exceptional stories that changes the standarts of our anime watching. Both are long series with some great conspiracies, human experimentation, masterming antagonist and characters seeking revenge.  Realistic, amazing animation really fitting the anime, characters have great development.

they both have a similar darker theme/mood with vengence as one of the goals. FMA is a bit more lighthearted and has way more characters to follow, but both are a good watch

From the same author. Both are psychological thrillers with a similar feel / narrative tone, characters, and settings (Europe). Both are likewise full of tension and twists.

although GITS and Monster are set in a different "universe" both share a common aspect, ie, a mystery/suspense, with a powerful and well hidden enemy who is being hunted down by the heros. On another aspect both are very mature with a complex story being the main attraction of these series. Monster has a slower pace and less action with much of the voilence being off screen while Gits is nothing short of a visual orgy.

WHR has kind of the same unfolding mystery feel. Not quite an action series, not quite horror, but nicely in between.

Monster and Bakumatsu Kikansetsu are two anime aimed at anime fans looking for a deeper story with a dark atmosphere. While Bakumatsu does have some romance which Monster doesn't have, the flow is very alike and there's plenty of mystery and even a similar sense of evil.

These two anime are far different in terms of plot, overall aims, time and place - so why watch the other one? Well, if you were drawn in by the underlying political nature of these anime, the dissolutions of naivety or grandeur, the evils of men and the power they abuse to manipulate others - than I highly recommend you view the other for a similar high-quality experience of these themes.
