Like Monster, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni dwells deep into its character's psyche. Characters undergo psychological changes while a horrifying factor slowly reveals itself. A little bit of detective work and teamwork are needed to solve the mysteries brought before the characters. Higurashi is surrounded by so many theories, questions, and deep mystery that it is not all that different than Monster. Both anime really require you to think so you can place pieces of the puzzle together. I think Monster fans will be very satisfied with Higurashi because it proves to be another intelligent mystery series and mind-grabber.

Szwagier Szwagier says...

In Both cases the material is very drastic, the atmosphere is dense and you do not know what exactly will happen. Both are good horror shows.

awpaperwings awpaperwings says...

Monster and Higurashi share a strong psychological aspect that I find is rare in anime. Both are heavily violent at times, yet it is not excessive. The two shows also have their differences though–At times Higurashi is peaceful and if not even comedic while Monster remains true to its dark and serious self the entire way through. All in all both of these shows are a great watch for anyone looking for their share of quality, unpredictable psychological mystery anime.

Master Keaton

Master Keaton

Taichi Keaton, a former British special forces operative, now works as an insurance investigator for the world-renowned insurance agency Lloyd's; but his true passion is history and archaeology, which he fulfills by teaching at universities and visiting various ruins. Make no mistake though, there is far more to Mr. Keaton's job than simply filing insurance forms and writing reports! His investigations take him around the world and into situations ranging from run-ins with the Russian mafia to solving murders and even foiling terrorist plots. There's never a dull moment, much to Keaton's dismay!

Both of these series feature a Japanese (or half-Japanese) man in serious and mature stories set in and around Europe. Master Keaton is a duller, more episodic series that is spread over all of Europe while Monster is more focused, compelling, darker, arced, and confined to Germany; but both are well worth watching. As each are based on works by the same seinen mangaka and are produced by the same director, animation studio etc., they are remarkably similar in style, execution, tone and so on. A fan of one simply must try the other as well.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Keaton may be more episodic and light hearted while Monster is more darker and story-driven. However, they share a similar animation style and character designs (their respective source manga is made by the same artist), low-key atmosphere and plots and settings that feel very much grounded in reality.

chii chii says...

Both shows are REAL. Real in the sense that they very well could be happening around the world now. There's mystery in humanity that each of these main characters explore one day at a time. Keaton takes the episodic approach where Monster has one plot all the way through. They are also both made by the same creator so there's a lot of similarities there as well. Check out one if you liked the other.

From the same author. Both are psychological thrillers with a similar feel / narrative tone, characters, and settings (Europe). Both are likewise full of tension and twists.

They are made by the same person. Both of them are twisted mysteries involving murder.

Slower paced thrillers of trying to find and stop a slippery murderer. Great plots in my opinion and both have fleshed out character relationships.

Pumpkin Scissors

Pumpkin Scissors

Wars leech the life out of a country in so many ways. They consume lives and resources at an incredible rate, but what is worst is the way they eat away at hope. The Empire, which has survived the years of war, now finds itself with a new conflict to resolve: with the exception of the noble families that managed to hold their wealth during the struggle, its populace is made up of starving citizens and war-damaged soldiers. Section III of the army of the Empire was created to deal with this ongoing problem; however, their progress was been slow on all fronts. The citizens fear and distrust them due to their experiences with other soldiers, the nobles have no use for them, and the other branches of the military mock them for the ineffectual nature. LT. Alice L. Malvin of Section III Pumpkin Scissors won't be defeated, though, even if her newest recruit does have something unusual about him.

Pumpkin Scissors, set in a place closely similar to post-WWI Germany, takes on social themes, like in Monster. Corruption, poverty, stratification, and indifference; the worst nature of people are exposed.

A major difference between the series would be that characters of Scissors are actively (but not very successfully) trying to change that, so it contains more action, diverts at moments from technical realism, and the tone isn't always as dark. Both combine episodic events and have a central storyline, with Scissors being more continuous.

Being among the few exploring this theme, Pumpkin Scissors (with a name even less reflecting the content than in Monster) offers another good look into the theme Monster is focused on.

This anime is more on the curruption side of the government and the change that someone triese to make. Even though seemingly having no relation, you still get the same kind of dark presense from both. Its a good watch so i'd check it out if you like Monster.

Monster and Tehxnolyze are certainly dark. They are really more mature than the average anime and will make you think! Both are well done and have a certain psychological tension. If you like one of these, I'm sure that you'll like the other!

Rohjake Rohjake says...

Monster and Texhnolyze have this grim dark, uneasy atmosphere. In both, we get to follow the main character's journey for revenge that is set in motion in the first episode(s).

Throughout the series the main character meets various people and we get to see how these people are affected by the main character and how they in turn affect the journey of Tenma and Ichise.

Out of these two Monster is definitely better but even Texhnolyze has its moments and it is worth of checking out if you are looking for something similar.

GITS and Monster are both high-rated anime. Using a strong story and reflecting upon morals and humanity, the topics are very similar as well. While the settings are completely different (sci-fi future vs WWII past), there are easily enough things to appeal the same audience since it is more likely that these two anime are watched by more adult fans.

Juuni Kokki and Monster are obviously both aimed at adults. Not only the story and the characters, but even the atmosphere and setting give off that feeling. In both you'll find serious topics in which politics play their part, yet these series don't end up boring as you'd expect from such a topic.

KiraRin KiraRin says...

Two polar opposite series make excellent companions for people who enjoy a more sophisticated and adult show. The character development in both Monster and Twelve Kingdoms has been the main focus, and the rise and struggle with emotions makes for some gripping viewing. I loved that you get to meet characters with real emotions, who reacted like I would in a situation, and not everything has the expected outcome.

If you enjoy something a little more intellectually challenging, realistic where action isn't the only pull, I think you will enjoy both of these shows.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

The war between the monarchical Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance has raged ceaselessly across the galaxy for over a century, with the fleets of both powers having fought countless battles. Currently the conflict revolves around the strategic Iserlohn Corridor, one of only two passages of space through which the two forces can access each other. Here the Empire has built the nigh-impregnable Iserlohn Fortress, whose deadly weaponry has thwarted repeated efforts by the Alliance to capture her. Phezzan, a neutral mercantile state, controls the other corridor. The long war has resulted in an indecisive stalemate, but there are two men from the two worlds who will change everything: Wen-Li Yang, a gifted strategist from the Alliance who wants nothing more than to retire and be a historian; and Reinhard von Lohengramm, a man from the Empire whose ambition knows no bounds. Their loves, struggles, triumphs and failures play across an interstellar stage of intrigue, war and death.

If you enjoyed one of these series with their elaborate plot, mature tone, large cast and suprising consistency of excellence throughout their impressively long running time, then it's quite likely you'll enjoy the other - though they come from very different genres. Both also involve a lengthly battle of wits between two figures, and, improbably enough, share an interest in German culture.

Songweaver Songweaver says...

This recommendation probably seems strange, and at surface value, it is. I am recommending these series for one another not because of similar genres, settings or themes, but because of the intangible feeling I've had after watching both of them. Both Monster and Legend of Galactic Heroes are both extremely mature and intelligent series they stand apart from the sea of common tropes and stereotypes in anime, and instead focus on telling a story that truly transcends it's medium. I can only wish to stumble upon another series as viscerally satisying as these within my lifetime.

Serious-minded seinen anime with a dark mature storyline about a blond, beautiful man and his ambiguous motives towards the world at large - and another man who knows him well and whose relationship with him unfolds in very interesting ways. If you enjoyed either one of these anime you really should consider watching the other.

In addition to the above recommendation I'll point out the shared predilection to fairly complex (but not overbearing), well thought out plots, as well as believable and well-developed characters.

Himitsu: The Revelation

Himitsu: The Revelation

In the present, murders are solved not by investigations, but by memories. Using the removed brain of a victim, the members of Forensic Investigation Office Section Nine examine the person's last thoughts to determine a suspect and motive in the case. Many oppose the violation of their loved ones' private and personal memories; but what they don't understand is that behind the scenes, even the investigators themselves are often conflicted with their deeds. Aoki Ikko is one such man who struggles to overcome his own mental doubts about his profession, while trying his best to take down those responsible for the crimes.

Just a few episodes into Himitsu and I was recalling scenes from Monster. These two shows focus on finding the truth behind the crime. Motives and the psychological effects of investigating grisly murders are explored in a serious and realistic manner. Though Himitsu takes a more episodic approach to the topic, these two shows handle mystery and murder in a real way all too uncommon in anime.

chii chii says...

If you love sitting on the edge of your seat mysteries exploring crimes and the motives behind them look no further than these 2 amazing series. Both have a wonderful slow pace to them and amazing characters that will suck you in wanting to learn everything possible about them and their situations. Himitsu takes things with a more randomly where each case is different but the method is always the same. Monster focuses on one case and explores everything in it. Follow both of these anime to find the mystery behind humanity among other questions.
