Based off the Japanese folktale "Momotaro", a girl named Momoko was born inside a giant peach. She was adopted by an old couple and grew up to be a voluptuous teen. Her three friends are animal Gods Inukami (dog), Sarukami (monkey), and Kijigami (pheasant); she has the ability to fuse with any of them to become a powerful magical girl. One day Momoko's village is attacked by the demon king's army who are searching for fragments of a treasure used to protect the land. After defeating the demons Momoko embarks on an journey with her animal friends to search for the "peach fragments" before they fall into the wrong hands.
Right, it's confession time for me. If you have been reading my reviews than you may have noticed that I tend to rip the anime a new one. There is a reason for this though and it has to do with the fact that I can't turn my brain off when watching anime. I can't ignore the stupid shown in the anime and this is a problem as most anime are very stupid indeed. In this case I'm not talking about a 90 pound girl catching a multi-ton cruise missile and throwing it back. Yes, it is stupid but it is a stupid that I'll allow. It's anime. Things like this are normal here and I'm pretty much fine with it. It annoys me to be sure but I will not rant about it. So, having explained this lets rip into this anime shall we? Just a heads up: There will most probably be spoilers. The more I hate an anime the more spoilers there will be. ART: Well, for those of us who watch anime on a regular basis you are most likely known with the odd and impractical clothes that anime characters wear most of the time. This anime is taking to a whole new level though. SOUND: I can honestly say nothing about the music. Whether this is a good or a bad thing..... CHARACTERS: Main character is Momoko. She was found floating down the river in a giant peach. The couple that found her raised her as their own daughter as they couldn't have children of their own. Following Momoko everywhere she goes are her three divine companions who teach her all she needs to know and how to defend herself. Inugami is a Dog God, Surugami is a Monkey Gog while Kijigami is a Pheasant God. Momoko can merge with any of them and gain special powers as a result. Onihime is the daughter of the Demon king Jyackio. She likes to out into the human world and uses the hunt for the Peach fragments as a excuse. She considers Momoko as her nemesis. STORY: With the war between the Demons and agents of Heaven starting up after years of peace the Deamons are after a weapon of ultimate power. This weapon was shattered in the final battle and were scattered acros the land. The agents of Heaven try desperately to find the fragments but the Demons are very powerful and always seem to have an edge. Fortunately the Heavens may have found a champion for their cause in Momoko. RANT: Let me begin with the fact that this anime was not made for me. I knew this when I first came acros this anime and I knew it when I started watching it. So why did I buy and watch it? Well, it was cheap and it is always possible that it would surprise me. It woudn't be the first time that I would be pleasantly surprised by an anime. However, having said that there does remain the question of who this anime was made for. I seriously don't know and I just watched it. Everything about it screams kids show: The voice acting, the story, the jokes, etc. Looking at it I can only say early teen and than we get a beach episode where all parties decide to have a truce in order to have a fun day. In the middle of this they get attacked by a giant squid that have a bikini fetish and strips all female characters nude. Of course you don't see any characters nude as all the naughty bits are covered by the squids' tentacles and...Wait, what?! How does that make it any better than showing full nudity! Seriously the tonal shift in this anime gave me whiplash at times. Also the length of the anime leaves some serious questions. There are 12 episodes and 2 of those are filler where the characters (all of them) come together and call a truce for the day in order to have some fun. One of them was on a beach and the other in the hot spring. You can probably guess what these episodes were about. Oddly enough these episodes were also the most fun to watch, especially the hot spring one. This epsisode was the only one that actually had a joke that I found funny. Anyway, that leaves 10 episodes for the story and it is beyond boring. Almost nothing of note happens in any of them except that a fragment is found and everyone scrambles to find it. The final 3 episodes are the climax where you learn that everything up to that was pointless as all you needed was the core fragment anyway. Once that is found the story starts snorting the nitro and boosts towards the end at ludicrous speeds and you still don't give a flying fuck about any of it. The final is such a paint by numbers affair that everything is predictable and it becomes even more boring. I was able to guess every twist and turn with 100% accuracy. All you want by then is for the anime to be over.
Not too bad of an ecchi fantasy/adventure this one was. Nothing particularly outstanding but makes for a pleasant watch when you need to turn your brain off and chill to something light-hearted. The story is very straightforward and reminds one of the simpler shows from the 90s without convoluted twists. The art is easy on the eye and while the chars themselves are mostly one-dimensional they are still likeable (the oni princess in particular). I find both the OP and ED quite groovy and fitting to the overall carefree atmosphere. I can certainly understand why many people would find this show boring and overly simplistic but to me this was a decent time-waster with light and non-invasive ecchi moments sprinkled throughout.
