Dallos

Dallos

Decades ago, the moon was colonized and turned into a mining colony whose profits benefited Earth and its people. A generation has passed and the workers are now treated as slaves -- forced to work in the mines under the rule of earth-born men, with many of the young people having never been to the land of their heritage. The time has come, however, for a rebellion to take place: to command Earth to hear their pleas; and afterwards, the moon and Dallos, the moon's god-like structure who silently sleeps and protects its inhabitants, will never be the same...

Similarities

  • •Space colonists struggle for independance
  • •Fighters wear robotic suits

Differences

  • •Down to earth vs.  epic
  • •Realistic vs. grandiose
  • •The little guy vs. famous heros/villians

As always, subs not dubs.

Both series explore the breakdown in relations between space colonists and Earthlings from the incipience of colonial rebellion. While Gundam is the more popular of the two franchises, it covers a lot more territory and focuses on grandios characters with unbelivable ability. Dallos, on the other hand, focuses on the specifics of one area and the characters are believably down to Earth—though not in the literal sense.

The Origin is much newer than Dallos and also benefits from decades of franchise succsess, so it is clearly a higher quality mini-series and not really fair to juxtapose with Dallos. In this regard I should rather compare Dallos to the original '79  Mobile Suit Gundam (OG), which I also recommend. In fact, Dallos has the better animation quality of the two and, due to being an OVA miniseries, doesn't feel episodic. The music of both series is dated with perhaps Dallos barely edging out OG with it's higher quality and more realistic sound effects.

The other major difference between Dallos and The Origin (as well as OG for that matter) is that the Gundam series focus more on giant robotic suit battles. In Dallos, the machines are more realistically sized (cf. the real world Suidobashi Heavy Industry's Kuratas) and are shown to be refitted mining machinery the rebels threw together.

I think most viewers major disappointment with Dallos stems from the series purposefully not resolving a few issues. While I did want these resolutions to sate my curiosity, I understand and kind of like the choice of leaving things open-ended. Dallos focuses on the little people and their plight. I was reminded of Imperial Japan's "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" where people overseas were mining in impossible conditions in order to fuel the Japanese warmachine and its economy. Dallos is like a single battle in the greater war.

On the other hand Gundam focuses on the big picture and a few big names, the same way we tend to look back at history. In particular The Origin focuses on Gundam fan favorite Char Aznable, his interactions with the Zabi family, and how he became the well loved anti-villian of OG Mobile Suit Gundam.

It's not the epic robot space battles that I love about any of these series it's the political plotting, intrigue, and stuggle for freedom—the reasons behind the battles—that pulls me in. In this regard Dallosedges out OG in my eyes.
