Gonzo does it again with this action-packed mecha comedy. She's an ordinary high school girl. He's a counterterror agent assigned to protect her from those who would steal the information locked in her mind. OK, so she's not so normal after all. Armored Slave battles and lovers' spats abound as Sousuke and his comrades try to track down the mysterious Gauln before it's too late.

FMP and 08th MS Team both involve giant military robots, large scale battles, and a romantic plots. The main difference is that FMP is lighter than 08th MS Team, while the latter has a more serious plot. Overall they're both great.

If the interpersonal drama in MSG 08th MS Team is what drew you to the series, then you can go even further and take a look at Jin-Roh: the Wolf Brigade. A modern retelling of an old fairy tale, Jin-Roh is dark and moody, a grim exploration of human nature.

I recommend this series because it's main character is also niave enough to think he can save everyone, good and bad, and is willing to do anything to further that goal. Though the fighting and setting are vastly different, I feel that those who liked 08's approach to the war will appreciate the politics and the characters in this series.

Unfortunately for the natives of Mayan, both sides of the conflict have taken an interest in their island, and all too soon, the outsiders' interference spells a disaster as terrible as any myth.

While MSG 08th MS Team's mecha are lumbering, land-bound machines of guerilla warfare, Macross Zero showcases the finest work in the industry today with a meld of beautiful CG and lush cel animation married to a wonderful story. 08th MS Team goes deeper than the average Gundam series, and Macross Zero delves even deeper with a fresh look at a classic mythos.

Both series share a realistic connection in terms of war and the soldiers that fight them. There are no immortal supersoldiers. People get hurt physically and mentally as they try to find what they are looking for on and off of the battlefield.

If you enjoyed the drama Gundam 08th MS Team as well as the high-tech feel of the series, you will definitely enjoy Planet-ES. A word of warning though, PlanetES does not have the same wartime setting as Gundam 08th MS Team. Do not expect the same action you see in a Gundam.

Both of these anime follow the actions of a small military unit caught up in a large war. With the focus on a very personal level, they are primarily character-driven, and show the struggles of regular soldiers. Both feature squads consisting of a few mecha pilots supported by mechanic, communications, and other support personnel. The plots are different enough to avoid seeming repetitive, but the series definitely give off a very similar feel.

Both 08th MS Team and Mellowlink are spin-offs to much bigger mecha franchises that focus on relatively ordinary soldiers rather than the larger-than-live heroes of the series' main entries.
