Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pichi Pitch will always hold a special place in my heart as one of my cherished childhood anime. The series recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with newly released merchandise, and a special edition manga.

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch is about seven color-themed mermaid princesses that uses their magical pearls and singing powers to save their kingdoms from devastation. The series focuses on the adventures of three mermaid princesses: Lucia, Hanon, and Rina. The series really capture the innocence and youth of teenage girls that focus on love and romance rather than their studies. But like traditional mermaid stories, the mermaids can't confess their love directly without turning into seafoam. So the girls use romantic body language like kisses to convey their love to their crushes.

In the sequel, new characters are introduced including new potential love interests for Hanon and the mature Rina. My favorite character is Lucia who saved Kaito's life in their childhood from a shipwreck. Kaito cherished Lucia's pearl and wore it as a necklace. Sadly, Lucia is depressed as she is forgotten by the one she loves. Kaito  and Lucia drift further apart after Kaito loses his memories. Kaito experiences amnesia after a surfing accident in Hawaii. A short-haired Mikaru nurses Kaito, and becomes his new love interest.

One of my favorite moments in the series was when the pink mermaid princess: Lucia made custom friendship bracelets for the aquamarine mermaid princess: Hanon and the green mermaid princess: Rina. Hanon has a very melodious voice and finds a new lover other than her music teacher. Rina learns to let go of her past and gets a new crush. Seira replaces Sarah as the new orange mermaid princess.

The charming and heartwarming J pop music really captured my attention. The characters really captivated me. In the prequel, the white-haired villain Gackto (Kaito's relative) was collecting mermaid princesses because he coveted their beauty. The sequel introduces new villains. Checkout the series to find out more details!
