Super robot of the 70s, one shouldn't need to tell anything else if you were a children back in the days.

If you missed it for any reason (including being born after the golden age of the super robot genre), there you have the basis of your animefanhood :)!!!

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

Getter Robo and Mazinger Z are both old school giant robot series. Attacks with silly names, a different giant villian to defeat each week, super science and saving the world!

I would be shocked if you did not like one if there, if you already enjoyed the other.

Both are creations of Go Nagai and are both incredible Super Robot series from the old school era!

Invincible Superman Zanbot 3

Invincible Superman Zanbot 3

Kappei is your normal run of the mill delinquent lad, riding motorcycles and trying to gain leadership of a gang. When fighting with a rival, they are both attacked by a strange creature! Fleeing to his Grandfather's nearby sea rig, Kappei is knocked into the water and is rescued by a giant spaceship piloted by his grandparents. Before he can figure out what is going on, he finds himself in the mighty Zam-bird, fighting against the monster that attacked him - a mecha-boost of the planet-destroying Gaizok! Kappei isn't the only one in his family who ends up with a giant robot, though; his cousin Uchuta pilots the Zambull and Keiko pilots the Zambase. Together, the three of them can transform into the Invincible Superman Zambot 3!

Mazinger Z and Zanbot 3 are more than old school, cheesy mecha series with transformation series, monsters of the week and attacks where the pilots have to yell out the name of in order to work (granted, they both have all of these).

On top of that, there are more similarities. A family which ends up with a giant robot. A villian who is after world domination, but attacks Japan to the exclusion of the rest of the world because the one thing that could defeat them is there. A pissed off populace because, let's face it, you can only stand to have your city destroyed so many times.

Both series also have the subtext of a cocky young pilot, who goes from gung-ho can't be wrong, to learning what it means to be a hero and that actions have consequences.

If you enjoyed Mazinger Z, you will also like Invincible Superman Zanbot 3 and vice versa.

Old school mecha anime simply are the best if you were born in the right age... Even to a younger audience, the super robots could seem to be quite appealing, years before the real robot genre started by the Gundam franchise (even if Tosho Daimos could be considered a less known precursor).

Kotetsushin Jeeg

Kotetsushin Jeeg

The year is 2025. Fifty years ago, Queen Himika and the evil Jama Empire attacked mankind; Kyushu, Japan, was their battleground. Ultimately an event caused fog to surround Kyushu, effectively cutting it off from the rest of Japan; and the mainland has lost contact with it ever since. In the present, students like the motorcycle-loving Kenji Kusanagi have little knowledge of these events, except what they learn in history books. However, when Himika and her Phantom Gods appear once more, Kenji finds himself in the middle of the battle - and a cockpit. Now, as the pilot of the mecha Jeeg, Kenji and a few unlikely classmates must battle the forces of evil and save the world!

Kotetsushin Jeeg reminds me of a combination of Getter Robo and Mazinger Z (with good reason given they are all the brainchild of Go Nagai). Cross Mazinger's moves and general look with Getter Robo's transforming and support vehicle. Combine the main characters to a degree, as well as their enemies, and poof,Jeeg!

Kotetsushin Jeeg is a more modern edition, and not quite as hokey as the old mecha series are. If you have fond memories of Mazinger Z I recommend giving a the more modern, yet still similar Kotetsushin Jeeg a try.

It would be shocking not to see the similarities between the two series. From the first few episodes, they seem like the same series, but with different robots. The dark haired, red wearing, mecha piloting main character. The daughter of a scientist/love interest/damsel in distress. The guy who is jealous of the main character and tries to put together his own vehicle to prove his worth. The corny music and attack names. The reference to power of God or Demon. A new monster to defeat each week. The list goes on and on.

Honestly, I was surprised when I learned Raideen was NOT a Go Nagai creation, considering the similarites.

With speed and panache, Haran takes down fiend after fiend with ease. Alongside the lovely Beauty and other fighters of justice, Haran and Daitarn 3 will save humanity and take down the evil invaders!

Do you love the combination of giant robots, super science, a new monster to defeat each week, and our hero saving the world? Look no futher than Mazinger Z and Daitarn 3. Both follow the familiar formula of the 1970s mecha scene. If you enjoyed one, I am sure you will enjoy the other.
