Matoi Sumeragi works as a part-time shrine maiden at her friend, Yuma’s, family shrine. While Yuma is next in line to become the shrine maiden, Matoi is content to pursue a normal life. Unfortunately, “normal life” comes to a crashing halt when she and Yuma find the shrine damaged and Yuma’s parents wounded. Things only escalate as Yuma’s “Divine Possession” ritual aims for, not Yuma, but Matoi, imbuing her with the powers of a god in a fight against evil spirits.

Being Ordinary's the Best!
I enjoyed this one lots. It's a fairly straightforward maho shojo style show with an uncomplicated plot but it's execution happens to be just right. Tons of action, comedy, as well as some fan service. The characters are funny and endearing and the battles are showy and colourful. It's not really all that dark though, so those expecting another Madoka Magika will be disappointed. But for what it actually is (namely a fun and buoyant magical girl series with lots of exciting action) it has proved to be an excellent choice. Recommended!
I don't really know what to say about Matoi the Sacred Slayer other than I enjoyed it way more than I should have. It really wasn't that spectacular of an anime, but there were little moments added that made it a great watch. The story itself was pretty generic. Girl discovers she has hidden powers, although she doesn't want them. She tries to get rid of them, but gives up and just uses them anyway. Nothing particularly special there. I really loved the characters in this series though. While none of them were particularly special, I felt quite a strong connection to them all, and grew to care about them quite a lot. Perhaps because they showed the characters to be very human, or maybe because there was a lot more character development than you would usually expect. Whatever the case, I loved them all. While not exactly an original series, there was a lot of interesting things in Matoi the Sacred Slayer. I'd say this series is one you'd enjoy more if you're fairly new to magical girl and fantasy. I can't say it's a great series, but it was certainly enjoyable.
