I would say Nadesico is Vandread's twin. They are really alike. It even got the men/women plot in it. And it takes place on a space ship where men and women have to live together. Check this out if you enjoyed Vandread.

DraconPern DraconPern says...

Great series with the same misfit crew in a One Ship(tm) vs. Everyone Else scenario. Lots of cool mechs and weaponry to light up your enemy in the cold dark space. Add some romantic subplots for good measure, and it becomes a pretty interesting anime. It may start out like it is for children, but the characters design definitly suggest something else. :)

lantis lantis says...

Space Opera Giant Robot Harem anime. Yeah, you heard me. Like Nadesico, Vandread plays on many common anime themes, and delivers a winning combination of unique characters, and on the mark comedy and action. And if anything, Yurika fans will enjoy Dita's single minded boy chasing. Nothing for Ruri fans though....

NekoRocket NekoRocket says...

If you're looking for quirky comedic action with a cast of colorful characters, then look no further than Vandread and Nadesico. Each of these space-based anime feature crews of unusual individuals brought together under strange circumstances. Good for laughs and a whole lot more.

deyo deyo says...

These two are so similar that it's hard to list many differences. They're about a relationship of a young girl and boy where they fight together against an unknown enemy while there are people who stand between them. The only big difference is that VanDread is in a world where men and women live apart from each other (they're enemies).

dragonlord dragonlord says...

humorous and space mecha. Just like Nadesico it involves the main character being thrust into a postition of importance and needs to grow into the hero he is inteded to become...

Yenya Yenya says...

Both Vandread and Nadesico share the space settings, the romantic relations between the two main characters, some mecha/action scenes, and both are "space operas" (this applies also to the 2nd stage of Vandread).

Frost Frost says...

Thematic likenesses abound: Both series are about the crew of a space cruiser and the difficulties from within and without. Where Nadesico might focus a bit more on character depth and their development, Vandread has more action - although both series have their share of between-character intrigue.

Asgorath Asgorath says...

Let's see and check for similarities...

Band of complete misfits on a spaceship? Check! Girl completely obsessed with clueless boy? Check! Them vs. everybody else? Check! Giant robot battles? Check! Lots of jokes mixed with action? Check!

And I fear I could go on for quite a while like this. I somehow can not imagine if you like either Nadesico or Vandread that you will not enjoy the other (or if you hate one show you somehow will love the other).

The stories are different enough to not seem like a repeat, but the formula and the general gist of the shows are the same. They are truly sister-shows.

Kastrophee Kastrophee says...

Miisfits who pilot spaceships and mechas, while fighting mysterious aliens/enemies who use AI-controlled ships. If you liked one the other is most likely up your alley , though Vandread is more serious while Nadesico has more humor (so you will most likely end up liking one more then the other, but which one depends on you.)

SmugDude SmugDude says...

Fans of the space genre and lovers of big robot battle sequences mixed in with women-chasing-men scenes would love Nadesico and Vandread. That said, I honestly have to say I liked Nadesico more, but that's not to say that Vandread isn't a great series with laugh out-loud moments.

chii chii says...

Many very unique people tossed onto a spaceship, with their fighting mecca's, all to save earth from invading enemies. Tonnes of laughter to be had with each fun filled episode. If you liked one you'd surely like the other.

sothis sothis says...

Vandread and Nadesico follow a ragtag team as they battle it out with sinister enemies, mixing comedy, romance and drama all in one.

jiropracter jiropracter says...

If you liked Vandread or Martian Successor Nadesico you will like the other because they both involve suspenseful space battles. As well Both have comedy elements and utilize Mechas to fight in space.

JenKenos JenKenos says...

Both stories are taking place in outer space, with a group of young people, each fighting for their important purpose. They show how team effort can overcome tricky challenges, but also let us take a look at how the crew is living everyday in their battleships, far away from their home, and the interactions between the members of it. Interactions which can be funny, romantic but dramatic as well. Along with flashy mecha battles, both titles are a treat.

Grach Grach says...

Both of these anime are not only high action mecha, but are also much more than that. In both, there is a harem/romance setup, with the male lead having many women vying for his attention; plenty of comedy abounds (more ecchi related in Vandread) as well.

If you liked (or loved) one, the other is a must see!

HKBattosai HKBattosai says...

If you liked Martian Successor Nadesico or Vandread then you'll probably like the other series as well. They are similar in a variety of ways. Both feature quirky casts with a very head strong male protagonist, are Sci-fi themed that primarily take place on space, have ships that are somewhat OP'd, and a plot device dealing with some form of separation of the human race.

Full Metal Panic!

Full Metal Panic!

Gonzo does it again with this action-packed mecha comedy. She's an ordinary high school girl. He's a counterterror agent assigned to protect her from those who would steal the information locked in her mind. OK, so she's not so normal after all. Armored Slave battles and lovers' spats abound as Sousuke and his comrades try to track down the mysterious Gauln before it's too late.

XMrNiceguyX XMrNiceguyX says...

Both Full Metal Panic as Martian Successor Nadesico are all about mecha's and have some really good comedy in it. The characters of both Nadesico and FMP are quite original; some habits you will not see in alot of other animes. the only thing really missing in FMP is the parody genre of Nadesico (to genkiganger).

Sevoth Sevoth says...

Both series are about mechs on the outside, but are, in actuality, moreso romantic comedies, and they both sport a likable, hilarious cast.

KiraRin KiraRin says...

Both shows are a mish-mash of genres. Put together mech, romance, sci-fi, action, adventure, slice-of-life and many more, and you get two of the most successful anime series to date.

Twisted romances, strong female leads, great mech battles and intreguing story. You may find yourself watching either of these series in one sitting as they are highly addictive.

Watch these series, and you wil be able to draw parallels with many of the characters and their relationships. Good fun to watch, and with an appeal to a very wide audience, I think these shows will be loved by the same crowd.

chii chii says...

Strong female leads, intelligent yet clueless male lead, mecca's, and a little bit of romance tossed in makes these two anime unique to each other. If you liked one check out the other.

stingreis stingreis says...

Both series have a bunch of Mecha Fighting, the both bring the characters together in a brilliant way and definately adds a plethra of different genre's with the messed up romance in FMP and the strange obsession with the boy Akito in Nadesico; then theres the action in the battles, the character struggles to find themselves when they are somwhere they dont want to be. It just has a lot of similarities between the two that would make a lover of one, a lover of the other.

TomikelT TomikelT says...

Nadesico is similar to Full Metal Panic; with love intrests and giant robot fight scens. If you liked one of these two anime you should enjoy watching the other one.

azerok2b azerok2b says...

Irresponsible Captain Tyler pretty much IS Nadesico, with the slight exception of having been conceived and aired a few years earlier

Zadillo Zadillo says...

Both share sort of a similar goal of poking a bit of fun at the space epic genre, with a likable cast and a nice mix of humor and seriousness.

himurakenshin himurakenshin says...

Quite similar shows. Daily life on spaceships, primarily comedy, but enough seriousness to keep you caring about what directions the plot and politics take during the more consequential episodes. Plenty of lovable characters Similar animation style as well. Both solid shows, especially for those looking for a light hearted but semi-serious space series.

alexditto alexditto says...

Captain Tylor pretty much IS Nadesico, only much funnier, with characters that are more likeable, and more interesting. So, if you liked Nadesico (or even just thought it was OK) you should definitely give Irresponsible Captain Tylor a try.

HKBattosai HKBattosai says...

If you liked Martian Successor Nadesico or Irresponsible Captain Tylor, then you'll probably like the other because both Outer Space anime are feature a crew with off-the-wall antics where crazy is more of the normal. Plus, both captains in each are aloof to certain aspects pertaining to either their leadership or personal surroundings.

Frost Frost says...

Although the cast of Nadesico is larger, and the relations between the characters more complex, it shares the theme of "group of space travellers with a mission" with Outlaw Star. Action, drama, humour, both series have a dash of everything.

kamirura kamirura says...

Nadesico also tells us the story of a crew of a big space ship. Though Nadesico is less serious than Outlaw star and abit more of a comedy. But it still got some emotional moments and the crew figthing for their ship.

stingreis stingreis says...

Outlaw star and Nadesico are both set on a ship where the crew fights in space, with an awkward girl piloting the ship. Outlaw star doesn't incorporate mecha fighting as a primary battle method, instead it is more one on one gunfighting type, but if you liked either of the two then you are sure to like the other.

lantis lantis says...

Well, I hate to draw the obvious conclusion, but its like this. For Evangelion fans, you would do yourself a disservice if you didn't watch Nadesico, which is a very good show that follows the genre of giant mech fighting well. For Nadesico fans, you should respect that Nadesico drew much inspiration, intentional or not, from Evangelion. Its a near guarantee that a fan of one will at least enjoy the other.

RiouGenkaku RiouGenkaku says...

Both animes are about giant robots and the struggles the pilots have. Although Martian successor nadesico is more on the comedic side as opposed to the dramamtic side like Evangelion Evangelion still has plenty light hearted funny moments.

stingreis stingreis says...

Well, these two anime's are completely alike, they are both mecha type anime's with a lot of sci-fi type idea's within it. Both are very plot driven as well. Even the animation is alike. They are so similar that it's almost scary. If you liked one, you will most likely like the other

Both Nadesico and Vandread you have that "out in space" and "fighting for mankind" sort of mentality, but then you have the light humor and interesting character development. Akito is a fairly good match for Hibiki. You'll like it!

Yenya Yenya says...

Both series are light-hearted comedies (although they get serious from time to time). Despite the differences they feel somewhat similar to me.

The differences include: the different settings (Nadesico takes place mainly in the space while Gurren-Lagann is situated under and on the ground), different set of characters (Nadesico is mostly one boy and many girls, while Gurren-Lagann has two male characters and two female ones).

Both series have a leading character who is more manly than a certain other well-known mecha series ^_~, lots of action, and a bit of romance and pathos.

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

There are some series which are serious, some series which are comedic, and then there are those who use seriousness as a comedic element. Martian Successor Nadesico and Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann are both examples of the later. From their transformation scenes, to the battles, to what it means to be a man, both series are a delight of entertainment quality. If you loved one, you will love the other.

sothis sothis says...

Kamina and Gai from these two series are EXTREMELY alike, from the nonstop gar to the respect the other male main char has for them. I'm shocked this rec isn't made more frequently, definitely a good pairing.

Excel Saga

Excel Saga

F City, F Prefecture: the battleground where good and evil have finally chosen to decide once and for all who will rule the world…or at least that's the general idea! Neither side seems up for the task, as surviving the brutality of everyday life is enough of a chore. On the side of evil is the organization of Across, its only member the loudmouthed and abrasive Excel who struggles just to put food in her stomach; on the side of good, three disenfranchised, unemployed bachelors whose only pursuit in life is romance. Add in alien invasions, jungle warfare, and Mexican immigrant laborers to Japan, and this war doesn't seem likely to be ending soon!

MaximusThrax MaximusThrax says...

Both these series are comedies which spend a lot of time mocking the anime/manga genre. The craziness that is Excel Saga is a more deliberate parody, with episodes often parody a specific theme, like dating sims. Nadesico is a mecha/spaceship show and does have a real plot, although it, too, mocks many anime conventions. Both shows are strongly recommended for those who've aleady seen a lot of anime and will thus get more of the references.

chii chii says...

Both are wonderful parody anime with a nice story of their own to go with making fun of other anime inbetween. Excel Saga makes fun of pretty much all genera's where Nadesico focuses more on Space and Mecca's. If you liked one check out the other.

Puni Puni Poemy

Puni Puni Poemy

Puni Puni Poemi is a spin-off of Excel Saga, the classic lampoon of all that is anime. This eccentric show is the "Scary Movie" of anime: younger viewers need not apply.

MaximusThrax MaximusThrax says...

Both of these anime are parodies of other shows. Puni Puni is a crazy, wild, violent, and sexual parody of Sailor Moon and other magical girl anime. Nadesico pokes fun at space battleship and mecha shows, and at anime fans in general. Nadesico is more serious and features a real plot, while Puni Puni is just a crazy ride full of ultra-rapid speech, total unrealism, and wild manga-influenced character expressions. If you want to watch anime making fun of other anime, these shows are both good, but you'll probably appreciate them more if you're a veteran anime fan with enough series under your belt to get the jokes.

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

Martian Successor Nadesico and Puni Puni Poemi are series which lampoon standard anime sterotypes. PPP lampoons the 'magical girl' stereotype, while Nadesico makes fun of various anime series. PPP is a little more over the top than Nadesico, but both are amusing and recommended to those who enjoy lampoon type anime.
