These both have a sort of slow-paced slice of life approach. They're both coming of age stories about young people learning about life. They have a similar style of humor mixed with moving moments between characters. They have a sort of similar art style too.

Both of these series are beautifully made with great story telling and well fleshed out characters. In Sangatsu no Lion, shogi is used as a metaphor and a tool to further enhance the story. In Showa Gen Rakugo, Rakugo is used to do the same thing. Each of these shows touches on darker subjects, such as bullying, loss, depression, illness, and more. If you enjoyed one, you will certainly enjoy the other.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

When a small-time crook is released from prison, he is determined to turn his life around by apprenticing himself to the great rakugo master Yakumo VIII, inspired by his performance of "Shinigami" during his incarceration. Surprisingly, the old man agrees to train him and brings his new apprentice to his own house to live, giving him the name "Yotaro", a classical word used in rakugo meaning "fool". Yakumo has much to teach about the art of rakugo, but both he and his ward Konatsu- a hot-headed young woman whose father was also a famous storyteller- are difficult people with a shared dark past. Yakumo refuses to train her, claiming that the world of rakugo is no place for women, and Konatsu has vowed to kill him, claiming that Yakumo murdered her father!

3-gatsu no Lion's alternates quite some dark moments or very sad ones to the happy ones while Chihayafuru is rather cheerful most of the times, both series still have that colourful atmosphere and very heartwarming vibe that catches your heart. - both are heavily mainly focused on old traditional Japanese games who are set to be 1 vs 1 players type, Chihayafuru deals with Karuta and Sangatsu has Shogi instead. Both games are greatly introduced and developed in a charming way that could easily let you curious with the will to try them (that is if we knew Japanese, of course). - characters' developing, victories, defeats, improvements, struggles are very well described and shown in both series
