Cetonis Cetonis says...

Kiddy Grade and Mai-Otome feature a similar style of storyline. Both series spend a good number of early episodes with their characters just living out their normal lives - well, as normal as being part of a superpowered soldier organization can be. At some point, though, the time comes when the protagonists get unceremoniously booted from these lives. They must then embark upon a rogue battle against both former friends, as well as new enemies, to reclaim them. The two series may use different styles to tell these stories, but they are alike enough at their core to make each a solid bet for fans of the other.

Betelgeuse Betelgeuse says...

1st: all the things Cetonis mentions are correct, and also do Kiddy Grade and Mai-Otome share that the protagonists are feminine, look quite young and the superpowers are artificial: we're dealing with a science fiction.

So liking one means at least considering the other.

Gavia Gavia says...

Both are about girls with superpowers in a sci-fi setting and both spend many episodes in the beginning on showing the characters' normal life. As such they both begin with a mix comedy, friendship and action. From there they to continue to amuchdarker plot, which has been built up to during the comedic part.

Mai-Otome and Angelic Layer have one obvious thing in common: both are shoujo anime that have decent fights in them. But my main reason for recommending them for each other lies in the characters: they give off a familiar feeling, and I think they'll be liked by the same people.

Ran Ran says...

Both Angelic Layer and Mai-Otome deal with the hard work of a girl who at first seems to have no talent, but later becomes a great fighter with some training. The underlying philosophy of these anime is the same, and typically Japanese.

Angelic Layer and Mai-Otome are shoujo series revolving around girls who fight hard and work hard to achieve their own goals.

Each of these are series with a lot of comedy but very series undertones. They revolve around a cast mixed up between those that realize what is going on in the world and those somewhat oblivious of it. Finally, the girls in both series seem to be trained for fighting, but wishing for peace. Finally, the world considers what came from the past to be simply advanced relics of forgotten technology.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

Mai-Otome and So-Ra-No-Wo-To are series that deal with a war type of situation with all of the characters wanting peace.  Both series have a comedic aspect to them, however, the underlying threat of a war is always looming overhead.

Betelgeuse Betelgeuse says...

In this post-apocalyptic world our protagonist is a naive aspirant young female warrior with a strange near perfect talent, and while watching the predominately female cast, we have fun as we see how she evolves & we enjoy how finally the new upcoming war is handled.

These are the aspects these anime share, so if you consider these to have been important in your fun watching this anime, definitely consider watching the other.

The Familiar of Zero

The Familiar of Zero

In a world where magic is a reality, the young Louise is at the bottom of her class. Dubbed "Zero" by her classmates at Tristein Academy (due to her zero success rate for magic), Louise (along with all first year students) was charged with summoning a familiar; and instead of a cute magical creature, the familiar arrived in the form of... Saito Hiraga, a normal Japanese boy who was abruptly teleported from his own world?! Can both Louise and Saito come to terms with their new and complicated "relationship" and (more importantly) help Saito find a way home?

Zero no Tsukaima has romance, ECCHI, cute magical girls who are in an academy and comedy, so I think you would enjoy it if you liked My-Otome, since these aspects are common in both shows.

Gavia Gavia says...

Both Mai-Otome and Zero no Tsukaima have plots dealing with master-servant relations and magic (or high enough technology that it's pretty much magic, in Mai-Otome's case). Both also feature humour, action and small amounts of ecchi. Mostly, they strike me as they would be enjoyed for the same reasons.

Both begin with a girl who really does no know what she is doin, but knows why she is trying. A wholesome heartfelt story of a young girl discovering herself while she battles all that is set before her.

Najaraja Najaraja says...

Like Mai-Otome, Stellvia centers around a young girl determined to follow her dreams. While she does not seem to have any particular skill, there is something extraordinary about her that others are inexplicably drawn to.

n00bl3t n00bl3t says...

Mai-Otome and To Aru Kaguka no Railgun both feature brightly coloured animation with an almost all-female cast. They both spend a lot of time on character-growth episodes as well as exuding the feeling that something bad is around the corner. If that is not enough to convince you that if you watched one you will like the other, then the fact that the girls in each series have superpowers certainly will.

eaper eaper says...

Each of these series are action/humor hybrids centered around a largely female cast of super powered school aged-kids. With character development taking a main role, just a touch of fan-service, and many few issues with morality (should I do X to become strong/win/what have you) it is hard not so see these anime connecting with one another.

Puni Puni Poemy

Puni Puni Poemy

Puni Puni Poemi is a spin-off of Excel Saga, the classic lampoon of all that is anime. It takes the daughter of two Excel Saga characters and puts her through parodies of shoujo, shounen, ecchi, hentai, and everything in-between. This eccentric show is the "Scary Movie" of anime: younger viewers need not apply.

Humor, cheesecake, and yuri (and in PPP's case, magical girl and hentai parodies) are the main ingredients of these magical girl shows. They're fairly different too, though, mostly because Mai-Otome takes itself 10x more seriously than Puni Puni Poemy does.

Chrono Crusade

Chrono Crusade

With devil worshipping on the rise, foul spirits and monsters have begun to surface, causing fear and panic in their wake. Combating this threat is the Magdalene Order – a group of religious officials charged with exorcising the evil that is spreading throughout the city. Rosette Christopher is a young nun who takes on missions alongside her contracted partner – a young demon named Chrono. Now it is up to this unlikely pair to wield God’s power – and plenty of holy bullets – to destroy the menace in front of them and confront the demons of their past.

Chrono Crusade has a lot of similar elements to Mai-Otome. A good story about mystery and betrayal is unfolded very slowly; yet there are plenty of lighthearted moments to liven up the atmosphere. Though this might just be my opinion, I feel that both of these anime appeal more towards shoujo-oriented fans.

The Vision of Escaflowne

The Vision of Escaflowne

Now Van, pilot of the famed armor suit Escaflowne; and Hitomi, whose hobby of predicting the future just became a frightening reality, must work together and fight the advanced technology of Zaibach: a force who want to shape Gaea to their visions of "peace". Follow Hitomi in her struggles against both these forces who seek to conquer this world, and her own confused heart.

Escaflowne and Mai-Otome might not have much in common at first sight, yet when taking a closer look the similarities quickly become obvious. Both are shoujo anime that combine a good plot, great villains, romance, and a tad bit of humor. The plot keeps running deeper which builds up the tension and creates a similar atmosphere.

Shakugan no Shana

Shakugan no Shana

Sakai Yuuji thought he was a normal high school student, until one fateful day when time stopped. Watching in horror, he witnesses a monster devouring the "frozen" people around him; but luckily for Yuuji, he is saved by a sword-wielding red-headed girl that calls herself a "Flame Haze". The girl informs him that he has been dead for some time now and that his current self is merely a replacement for the human that he used be while alive. He is, she says, merely a torch whose life will come to an end when the blue flame in his chest ceases to burn. After this rude awakening, Yuuji realizes that he is able to see the flames of life in other "torches"; and after discovering that a friend of his is also a torch -- and her life is burning out faster than his – he gains the courage to live out the rest of his life with meaning. Will Yuuji be able to find his place in the world before he ceases to exist?

MrsickVisionz MrsickVisionz says...

Both shows are good mix of girls kicking arse, action and plenty of grade school romance/drama topped off with a splash of comedy. Shana is definately less umm... risque when it comes to the type of relationships they'll show and there is far less fan service.
