Magical Girl Raising Project is a popular social game that has an ability to grant players a 1 in 10,000 chance to become a real life Magical Girl with unique magical abilities to help people. However, at some point, Fav, the magical administrator fairy, decides to cut the population of Magical Girls in half. SPOILER FREE REVIEW I went into Magical Girl Raising Project expecting another series to try to be an edgy magical girl series because Puella Magi Madoka Magica was followed by plenty of these types of series. Is it edgy? Yes. But it is genuinely fantastic! The strongest part of the series is the story and the characters. Not only is the plot strung together very well, the amount of detail, as well as ambiguity, can easily leave you either caring far more about a character than you expected, or being torn when they do horrible things, but you connect their their backgrounds. These girls are not just your average or above average school girls: they're of various ages and backgrounds, with different strengths and weaknesses. I'm not going to pretend the series does anything specatular beyond characters and story. The animation arguably isn't anything special, and most of the music felt very generic. It wasn't poorly placed by any means, but I might even have a hard time identifying the opening theme on the fly. I gave them favorable scores, though, because they work. They convey the ideas effectively, and very rarely did I think that a scene was poorly or oddly handled with the animation or music. While I want people to appreciate what it does, I know Magical Girl Raising Project will likely be neglected. Due to the amount of uniquely handled violence, I'm not confident it will be picked up for a dub, or be very popular upon a dubbed release, but I think it is important both for sake of story telling and for people who like the magical girl genre, but want to see something that is mature without being over-the-top. Also if you didn't know this is part of a light novel series. Which is great, because it means potential printed media to get translated, but kinda killed participating in the fandom, because far future spoilers came pretty early. Though we could look forward to a follow-up, since the series apparently focuses on many other magical girls, which I hope to see in a follow-up stires, if not an OVA or mini-series. If reading this review makes you feel you want to watch it, then give it a watch. Most of it will be free to watch on Crunchyroll, so no reason to not give it a try. If the first episode doesn't sell you on the premise, the second episode will clear things up and kinda outline what you should expect for the rest of the series. The stakes only go higher, but the idea is mostly the same. I loved this series, and hope to see it gain the respect it deserves.

JV's Anime Of The Season: Fall 2016 Positive *MSIK is not what it seems on the surface. This is not your typical magical girl anime where everything is fun and fluffy and colorful. On the contrary, if you have seen PMMM in the past, well it’s like that. This was quite the depressing anime for a number of reasons which I’ll get into to later on. Now somewhere this shouldn’t come as a surprise for those that are familiar with the studio Lerche. Lerche has fooled us more than once in the past by making an anime appear as very fun but then quickly pulling out the depression card. Also here if you have seen Gakkou Gurashi, another anime from them, MSIK has the exact same feel to it. The characters being dropped into this dark world where only suffering seems to exist. For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Link on my profile page. *Now one of the things that made this anime so depressing and to me the main reason why I really liked MSIK was the unpredictability. As soon as episode 2 I believe no character is safe anymore. Now this won’t really be a spoiler since you see it in literally the first second of the anime. But girls die in this anime. And that’s where the unpredictability comes into play since you cannot predict when the next girl is going to die and who it will be. Before I started an episode I always made a prediction about who was going to die based on my anime experience. But every single time I was wrong. Every time it was someone else, someone that I didn’t expect. Every time when I thought that a character would be important to the story and live to the end, she got massacred the episode after that. So time and time again this anime threw me off and made me come back for more. *Another thing that made me come back to MSIK was the fact that there were so many characters to hate. I don’t think that I have had an anime before, except School Days but that’s a whole other level, where I truly hated 4 characters. One character that happens, two, that’s a rarity but 4 characters that I hated to the core has never happened before. These characters were so despicable, all 4 of them. I’m not going to say which characters so that I don’t spoil things but you can find them in my hated characters list on A-P. Man did I hate them all, all for different reasons from being absolutely insane to being a terrible mother figure. Negative *Now because of the large number of characters in this anime a small problem was that the main female Snow-white was pushed to the background. She wasn’t a real MC. All the time we were focussing on other characters that most likely would die a few episodes later. And because of that we kind of missed the full depression and suffering that Snow-white went through. True the anime does show that Snow-white becomes depressed and slowly breaks down but it wasn’t as powerful as for instance the mental unstableness of Gakkou Gurashi’s main female character. *Next thing was that the anime wasted its trump card in the first seconds of the anime. They immediately show that this is going to be a dark anime so the surprise was gone. If they hadn’t show that than the ending of the second episode where shit starts to go down would have had a lot more impact. That’s something that both PMMM and Gakkou Gurashi did better by making us believe the whole fun set-up for at least a full episode. *And the final negative point is that again this is an anime that isn’t finished at the end. Can’s they just make complete anime’s anymore these days? True the first arc if you will is finished but the bigger picture being the Magical Girl Raising Project hasn’t been touched yet. So or we’ll one day see a second season, which I doubt since that second season of Gakkou Gurashi also isn’t going to happen apparently, or I’ll have another LN series to read. Conclusion So as a conclusion, MSIK was kind of he little sister of PMMM. It used the same theme and tired to invoke the same atmosphere as its more famous precedent. Still it had its unique trades many being that you couldn’t predict who the next character to die was. So overall this was a pretty good anime and definitely the best one that I saw in the past Fall season. So I’m going to rate Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku at 4 stars with my stamp or Anime of the Season Fall 2016. If you were a fan of anime’s like PMMM than this one is an anime that you should add to your To Watch list.

Hello, friends! I've finally finished Magical Girl Raising Project (MGRP) and... I have thoughts! Let's go over them. ALL HAIL TAMA, THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE SHOW! First off, I'd like to briefly introduce myself. I'm MagicalTyger (Tyger) and I love magical girl anime! I absolutely adore the genre!  However... magical girls can be a bit too sunshine-and-rainbows sometimes. I appreciate when mangaka and animation studios push the limits of the genre and absolutely stun their audiences. This is why Madoka Magica is my favorite anime! So, allow me to point something out: DO NOT COMPARE THIS SHOW TO MADOKA MAGICA! This is something that many, many, many anime enthusiasts do, and it's a HUGE no-no! Did Madoka Magica spark a massive revolution in the magical girl genre? Of course, it did! HOWEVER, a dark magical girl show that succeeds Madoka Magica does NOT automatically make it an attempted copy of Madoka Magica. Comparing MGRP, Mahou Shoujo Site, or Granbelm to Madoka Magica is like comparing chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream to mint chocolate chip ice cream: They include the same core ingredient (chocolate chips) but they are not inherently the same. Dark magical girl shows do not need to compete! Reviewers who immediately jump to Madoka Magica in order to prove that another dark magical show is bad are not good reviewers. With that out of the way... review time! I'll try to keep this brief. STORY 7/10 The story is not too complex, but you'll still be surprised at least once. ANIMATION 8/10 This anime does not contain jaw-dropping, gorgeous animation that you'd find in an anime film, but the animations are not terrible. The fight scenes contain some pretty neat animations! SOUND 7/10 The soundtrack is very nice. The only reason why it gets a 7 is because of its repetitiveness. You will definitely hear 'Nocturne', 'Sweeping Force', 'Clash', 'Staging and Leaping', and 'Reqiuem' a lot... however, with an OST of only 37 songs, it's expected that some songs would be reused more than others. CHARACTERS 7/10 The sad reality is that you won't be able to fall in love with the characters who are tragically ripped from the plotline earlier on in the series. Despite this, every character is given their own backstory, character song, and more. If you feel that you weren't able to connect too well to a certain character, there is a Wikipedia database dedicated to the series! Alongside this, there's a light novel that the anime was based on! OVERALL 7/10 I would give this show an 8/10, but I must realize that there are three 7's and one 8. Therefore, the score must be averaged at a 7/10.  Remember: A 7/10 IS NOT BAD! Rather, it simply means that the anime is a hit-or-miss amongst its audience. In contrast to a 6/10, a 7/10 indicates that there is a notable amount of "good" content alongside the "bad". If you like dark magical girl shows, then MGRP is a show that you should check out! Just be prepared to leave the show with mixed feelings. Thanks for readin'! Tyger OUT!
