Somali and the Forest Spirit

Somali and the Forest Spirit

In a world where the ruined human species has been driven almost to extinction by the monsters that now dominate the land, a forest golem is surprised to find a human child sitting alone in the woods - dirty, barefoot, and in chains. The golem takes little Somali under his protection and the two begin a journey together, traveling through beautiful and dangerous lands where the small girl's humanity must be kept hidden for her own safety. The golem hopes to find Somali's parents alive somewhere, but the chances of this are slim; and besides, as far as Somali is concerned, she has already found herself a beloved father.

Reasons you might like Somali and the Forest Spirit...

If you like the adventurous aspect of "Made in Abyss", in combination with a cute main character and something like a robot, but can't bear the dreadful part of the storytelling of MiA or can live without it for a change, then "Somali and the Forest Spirit" might be a good pick for you.

Made in Abyss has this underlying very dark tone to it, and also pushes against people's learned sensitivities and values. It always reminds us that the whole world in MiA has very different values, and it doesn't care about the values of our world. "Somali and the Forest Spirit" is not completely different in that regard, but much more gentle. Also, the dystopian undertone, present in both shows from early on, is much less brutal. Both shows make very clear from an early point, that things will most likely not be just perfectly okay at the end, or it might even end very ugly. I'm not hinting at the end of either show or spoiling it, but I want to point out that even the general outlook in MiA is much more hopeless right from the start.

"Somali and the Forest Spirit" feels unlike "Made in Abyss" like a finished story. A sequel, telling us more about the world and how the things in it will move forward, would be nice, but I don't feel that it is required. This one season is at least in my opinion still a complete story. It actually would possibly have gotten another season, though this might never happen, since the author seems to have severe health problems.

For people who like "Made in Abyss" this one here is a good way to pass the time in between, with a lot of the likable elements of MiA though without the exiting dread and edginess. It feels familiar but still so different. Even without some of the exciting elements, it's still not a show made for children, and doesn't become boring or silly.

Both shows touch on the subject of parenthood, but "Somali and the Forest Spirit" can be regarded as an advocacy for the value of a stoic and strong father figure, instead of letting the children go out into the world or even into hell on their own. So it is again some interesting comparison.
