although they are very different, they have a similar story line that involves a friendship between a human and a ocean being.

mermaids link up.

Both of these movies are similar coming of age family films about a relationship between a boy and a fish girl. They are Both very whimsical, cute, interesting, unconventional/very creative stories that are great for both the whole family or a person who loves ghibli movies. These two stores fit very well side by side.

YuiYui YuiYui says...

Both of these family-friendly movies follow the tale between a boy and a fish like  creature (one has a goldfish human combo and the other has a mermaid). The stories of both are heartwarming and follow a similar pattern with how they are told. Two fun movies that you can watch on your own or with family, if you've watched one you should check out the other.

Both have a strong theme of being yourself and caring for others. Lu Over the Wall is definitely more silly and outlandish than Ponyo, but they both have heartwarming characters and wonderful animations. And if your anything like me stories of magic tied with slice of life is always an amazing combination!

Both Lu Over the Wall and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea have themes of bright colors, merfolk, and mystical connections with the sea.

Both are kinda weird movies that for some reason gave me a very similar vibe. They both feature a normal kid who gets dragged into a fantasy world (in one case figuratively, the other literally), and a cute friendship between the boy and the non-human that brought them into that world.
