She explains to him the source of her loneliness: she had missed a lot of the previous school year and thus is repeating her third year; everybody that she knew has already graduated, and she is lonely. Tomoya is rather indifferent at first, but decides that he has nothing better to do and spends increasingly more time helping Nagisa restore the school drama club. First things first: SAWAKO = KOTOMI. Best shy girl voice ever!! There are a few similarities between these two in terms of style and in terms of content. The idea of two strangers eventually becoming friends and then eventually becoming interested in each other is a major parallel. Also, the two shows have a similar sense of humour.

StevenSAKUJO StevenSAKUJO says...

Clannad is similar because of the school inspirational type series with a romance running through it's core. Both animes will cause you to feel similar emotions although Clannad takes itself a little more seriously they're still quite similar in my opinion.

The female lead in both of these stories starts as an outsider, and neither of them is very confident. However, they're both cute and likeable and it's fun to watch as their respective love interests help to bring out their best. Both shows have lots of touching moments and cuteness and are super girly in a good way.

Kimi ni Todoke and Orange

Both of these animes have a cute love story which captures the innocence of first love. The female leads Sawako and Naho both are shy and love the male lead from the very start of the series. As the series develop the male leads fall in love with the female leads.

Importantly, both these series have sensible yet refreshing plots.

Candies Candies says...

Both Kimi ni Todoke and Orange based on as serious romantic story. The characters are similar and so is plot.

strangelookingcat strangelookingcat says...

It has your typical trope of a shy girl falling for the popular guy and the popular guy actually falls for her too. Not to mention, the adorable B-couple -- another couple in the same circle of friends who are as cute (or cuter) as the main couple. I watched Kimi ni Todoke before Orange and oh boy, the connection was so close that I would often mix names up.

Nodame Cantabile

Nodame Cantabile

The studious and uptight Chiaki is well-known as the top pianist of his school, and dreams of becoming a world-class conductor like his idol, Viera; but his fear of flying (which makes studying abroad impossible) combined with a recent break-up and dismissal from his piano instructor causes that future to seem both bleak and unlikely. After collapsing outside of his apartment, drunk, Chiaki inadvertently meets a young woman named Nodame who, while quite talented at the piano, is unclean, clumsy, and haphazard. Despite being almost polar opposites, the two begin to grow closer and work, together, to overcome the obstacles in their careers.

While they seem different both in setting ( college vs high school ) in characters ( strict guy + cheerful girl vs cheerful guy + gloomy girl) and  even in the designated age of viewers (josei vs shoujo) they still should appeal to the same kind of audience.

Both of those shows are lighthearted tales of growing up, and finding friendship/love. Both maintain the balance between the comedy, romance and "heartwarming". Both shows due to beatiful animation and good ost create a really warm mood, and easily bring smiles to viewers face. If you like one check the other.

Cassii3 Cassii3 says...

Although the Girl in this anime isn't shy like Sawako, you see a relationship grow between them while the leads dont and eventually they accept each others feelings and the guy encourages the girl to do her best with supporting friends :)

Hitohira

Hitohira

Asai Mugi's everyday life is very much impacted by a singular problem: she suffers from extreme shyness. Her sole friend Touyama Kayo would like to help her out as they've just entered high school, but Mugi's shyness is the sort that steals her voice entirely. It is too bad for Mugi that a freak shout on her part attracted the attention of Nono Ichinose. Nono is on a mission to save her Drama Research Society, and she isn't prepared to accept shyness as excuse from on-stage performances! With a small group of close friends to encourage and educate her, Mugi will be given a chance to be more than she is now. But, can someone so terribly shy really become a stage actress in just a few short months?

Kimi ni Todoke and Hitohira are about two painfully shy high school girls and their struggles to change themselves for the better. Along the way, they make new friends and learn about themselves.

StevenSAKUJO StevenSAKUJO says...

In both of these anime there is a shy girl who eventually overcomes their disposition by the help of some special friends. They have significant differences but they are still quite similar in bringing out the same kind of emotions.

The characters are so similar in Special A and Kimi ni Todoke.  The romance feeling concerning the main characters in each series builds and builds until the very end of the series and keeps people waiting in anticipation until the end.

Cassii3 Cassii3 says...

Both animes have romance in and heart beating moments. The main character isn't as lively as the one in special A tho but give it a chance, kimi ni todoke is wayyy better and for those who dont like the perverted type e.g. flashing and only like the normal sweet funny romance then watch kimi ni todoke <3 :D YOUR'LL LOVE IT! i give you my world :)!!!

Bakuman.

Bakuman.

Takagi is happy to return the book, but on the condition that Mashiro agrees to become a mangaka with him. Though Mashiro initially declines, he soon reconsiders when he discovers that the girl he likes, Azuki, dreams of becoming a voice actress. And after promising that she can have the lead role if their manga is ever adapted into an anime, he suggests that they get married once they are both successful! Shockingly, she agrees to the proposal and Mashiro and Takagi embark on their quest to become manga artists.

On the face of it these series have little in common, but dig a little deeper and there is a lot that they share. Both focus on the relationships of students, and in both series these relationships are broken down to a microscopic scale, so that each text or lingering glance becomes a momentous event. It works to great effect and you can't help but get caught up in the romance of it all. The shows also share a similar visual flair, as well as slower pacing. If you enjoyed one of these shows I'd highly recommend checking out the other!

Well first off Bakuman is Shounen and Kimi ni Todoke is Shoujo, but they are very similar in the aspects of romance. Very sensitive character relationships

These series are very similar in a sense that they provide that peaceful, quiet and relaxing atmosphere. A heartwarming watch. Whichever you decide to view, I am certain you would love the other.

Brad Brad says...

Both these shows are romances that are a little slower paced than most of this ilk, and while the art style aren't the exact same style, they both take a soft approach with their visuals, Aoi Hana in particular.

While Aoi Hana is a shoujo-ai series rather than a straight up shoujo like Kimi ni Todoke, the female lead in both is a quiet individual who is inexperienced in love. The latter focuses a bit more on comedy than the former, but both are pretty heart warming school romance stories.

Horimiya

Horimiya

Kyouko and Izumi are two classmates who each lead a double life: the popular and talented Kyouko cares for her little brother by herself while her parents are away, and the quiet, bespectacled Izumi hides his many piercings and tattoos at school. After accidentally discovering each other's secrets the pair becomes fast friends, and together, they begin to navigate their new relationship together amongst unknowing peers and love rivals alike.

Both are a nice mix of romance and comedy with the MC's coming to terms with there true feelings.

I watched Kimi ni Todoke quite a while ago so don't remember it that well but for whatever reason Horimya makes me think of it!

Qplayer Qplayer says...

Played straight shoujo romances about a couple with opposite personalities falling in love. In Horimiya it's the guy who's misunderstood whereas in Kimi ni Todoke it's the girl. Both anime have strong themes of school life friendships and adolescent drama.

they r both rly cute/wholesome shojo romances. The settings may be slightly different but they give me a similar vibe.

Both are about blossoming romantic relationships and a character has some amount of social anxiety/ineptitude, compounded by others misunderstanding them.
