Stories of bright, optimistic pre-teen girls seperated from their families who must work hard to earn their living. Based on classic novels, both tales take place over a century ago and give a detailed view of what life was like in days where child workers were common before the introduction of child labor laws. Both protagonists are considerate, responsible and highly likeble.

Two tales set in the early 20th century of a determined young girl doing her best to work hard without the aid or protection of her parents. Both of Anne's are dead and Katri's only surviving parent has been out of the counrty and absent from her life for several years. Both girls are accutely aware that people who can't make themselves useful in the world face grave consequences; Anne is determined to do whatever she can to avoid being sent to an orphanage while Katri hires herself out to keep herself and her grandparents from starving while they all wait for news of her long-absent mother.

In the French countryside, a large white dog roams from place to place, helping townspeople where she goes; but the ungrateful people think she is a menace and a threat, and seek to capture and kill her. Meanwhile, in a town near the Pyrenees Mountains that separate France from Spain, a young boy named Sebastian lives a life of loneliness. Left behind by his gypsy mother when he was just a baby, Sebastian has been raised since birth by an old man and a young woman; but even though he is surrounded by a loving family, Sebastian is picked on by the other children and longs to know his real parents. When the white dog arrives in Sebastian’s town, her and the boy happen upon each other and become fast friends. Sebastian names his newfound companion Belle and does his best to keep her safe, but ultimately the two must flee their home. With mountains and adventures ahead of them, Sebastian and Belle set forth to escape danger and find Sebastian’s mother.

In olden times two children seperated from their mothers carried on living with the love and aid of their clever dogs. In Finland Katri and her dachshund are working to help support her grandparents as she waits for her mother, who has been absent for three years, to return from Germany while in France, Sebastian has been waiting since infacy for his mother's return and finally decides to leave the country in search of her with the companionship of his puppy Poochy and his great pyrenees Belle. Charming classic 80's animation that you won't mind sharing with modern day children.

In her new home, Heidi will learn to love the countryside, make friends with the flowers and goats, and most importantly warm the hearts of all of the people around her.
