Izetta: The Last Witch Episode 5 - A False Miracle

Izetta is powerful enough to fight whole armies, but her strength is limited. She can only use her abilities near certain ley lines, and outside them, she's no different than a normal girl. When the Germanian army attacks in a spot far from these ley lines, the duchy is forced into a corner: how can they repel these foes without giving up the secret of Izetta's strength?

Tanya and Izetta are near mirror stories of one another with a few slight differences.  Both stories are centered around a girl with powerful magic and both are deemed a kind of secret weapon.  Each takes place in alternate European Earth History around WWI and WWII respectively, though parts of Tanya are reflective of WWII as well.  Both are based around real history Earth's but where magic exists.  Both magic users often use and/or carry guns among their arsenal.  The nations each magic user supports are standing against enemies of overwhelming odds.  Nations of WWI and WWII are featured prominently though with alternate names, territories, weapons, tech, leaders, and/or as either the nations with or against the protagonists.  The magic users fly often in either story while using forms of combat magic against invaders.  The nations of the protagonists in both stories are the ones being invaded.  There is a spiritual/religious connection for both magic users within the scope of the story.  Both stories have some crossing overlap with WWI and WWII, such as the enemy in Izetta is imperial aka circa WWI, while in Tanya some WWII weapons and tech such as aircraft are seen.  The magic users in both stories rely on external means to help use their magic, ley lines for Izetta and a magical orb device for Tanya.

The only differences are: types of magic use; age of the protagonist; which nations are fighting which nations; which nations are behind each protagonist; the fact that in Tanya, the enemy also employs magic users while only one appears in Izetta; and approximate timeline relative of each story within the differing alternate universes.

Both shows are centered around girls with magical powers that fight in a world war (WWI in Youjo Senki and WWII in Izetta). Also both shows feature the nations that participated in those wars, though with some name changes. The main difference between both shows is that in Youjo Senki there are a good amount of soldiers who can use magic (both allies and enemies of the main character) while in Izetta the titular character is pretty much the only one capable of using magic.

All in all fans of one will enjoy the other too.

I loved Saga of Tanya. It rings with me most simply because she refuses the entire time to declair there is a God and proceeds to kick butt.  Izetta is a feel good show and though I did enjoy it Tanya just wins it for me.

Under the guise of regular high school girls, they act as spies under cover. Disguise, reconnaissance, infiltration, car chases... Each girl uses their own set of...

Both are historical (late 19th century contra WWII) shows set in Europe, in times of war. There are some supernatural elements to both shows, which mainly focus on floating stuff in the air. Both have female main characters, who for bonus points are drawn in similar art styles.

I agree with MaraRuizu and add that there's frienship between girls as main focus. There's something like a master/servant relationship based on friendship eventually (that's yet to be confirmed) and there's a lot of friendly interaction with people of opposite alliance. Obviously character death is a topic in both (definitely for the minor characters, as for the main characters I'll put a ??? here. I'm still to find out and I'd not spoil it anyways ;) )

Both stories are about young protaginists trying to survive and succeed in difficult political situations they get involved with. I enjoyed both.
