A perfect example of how you take a great series, and completely fail with the OVA.

Spoiler free review

Story 3/10

The story feels forced, and the characters don't act like they do in the anime. Not too much more I can say without ranting or spoilers though.

Animation 6/10

Similar to the main series, but feels cheaper at points. It was enough for me to dock it a point, and I considered 2.

Characters 1/10

Yes, one point here (it wouldn't let me do 0). The characters were one of the strongest points of the main series, and some of them act so out of sync I ended up checking to see if I missed an episode somewhere. I didn't. No decent explination is given, and it ruins the OVA.

Overall 2/10

If you enjoyed the series, I would strongly encourage you not to watch the OVA. On the other hand, if you want to watch an OVA completely fail, this is a perfect example.

Well, how to begin... Let me start by words that this OVA was rather disappointing. It isn´t bad, NO ! I enjoyed it quite a bit but, I enjoyed the original series a lot more and once I watched this I just felt like this OVA should get a second title: The deleted Scenes or The Alternative version. Why ? Let me explain...

Story: 6-7/10

The story of the OVA is set after the happenings of the original series but you´ll rarely get the feeling it really is taking place after everything because except some small differences the whole OVA looks more like something that didn´t fit into the original story rather than its continuation. Testimony to this argument is the fact that only a half of the entire OVA has actually something to do with the story and its “continuation”. The other half can be described with one word: “filler”. Approximately 5 of the 10 episodes are fillers portraying individuals in either everyday life or describing their backgrounds. It´s not necessarily bad, but it kind of confuses the whole feel of the entire OVA. Were they trying to continue the story or bring depth to the characters? Looking at the OVA one might think both but that proves to be not the smartest solution if you ask me. The OVA would be a lot better if they went only with one of the two possibilities and concentrate on it, rather than having both but each being half-assed. The worst part of it all is the fact that like the original series, even the OVA ends with a cliff-hanger but unlike the original where the ending could be interpreted as a kind of “open ending”, the end of the OVA literally demands another season that would continue where the OVA left off (but let´s be frank, the possibility of there ever being a continuation is nearing absolute zero so the OVA leaves a certain feel of incompletion thus disappointment).

Characters/Animation/Sound: 7.5/10

Aside from the story, not much has changed. The characters kept most of their traits (with some changes here and there but nothing major) and even the sound and graphic quality remained on the pretty much same level considering how old the show actually is. Even the humour remained. Maybe not so much of it as in the original but you still can find yourself smiling at some parts.

Enjoyment: 7-8/10

Since I liked the original to the point of giving it a 4.5/5 stars I was really happy to see the old faces of Tylor and co. once again. Despite the problems I had with the story the anime proved to be not that bad as a whole but due to its nature I just couldn´t bring myself to like it as much as I did the prequel. In short, the OVA is enjoyable but don´t expect too much.

Overall: 7/10

Due to the rather weak story (and the way it ends) the OVA is far from home when it comes to comparing it to the original series but as the saying goes: “It still could have been worse”. It isn´t bad or anything but it definitely could have been better in more aspects than one. If you liked the original you might probably like even the OVA with its ups and downs and if you won´t put too much hope in it you might find it to be a not so good but still nice sequel.

Re-watchability: 2/5

(5)- Anywhere, anytime, as many times as you like!

(4)-Definitely worth seeing more than 3 times…

(3)-Once for regular viewer, 2 (or even 3) times for a fan.

(2)- Seeing once is more than enough.

(1)- Impossible to even reach the end…

this is basically a parallel universe to that of the anime because the character behave differently and the story is  different too,

I do not recommend to all those who want to see a continuation of the anime because this will ruin the final impression

Story: 2.5/10

The story it starts off with truly annoyed me. I thought I was gonna yell at the screen several times and I rolled my eyes quite a few times as well. The “explanation” we got for Tylor’s behaviour at the end did not make up for how it progressed. It could’ve been done a whooooole lot better if you ask me.

Then we go on to the side stories which i thought would be interesting. And while they were to some degree, some of them were really cliché and the one with the kid following Tylor just pissed me off to no end. I mean, he stood Yuriko up for some terrible reasons, like eating cake and drinking with hobos in the middle of the street. And while some reasons were good, like taking the kid to the doctor, it didn’t make me much less pissed at Tylor. He could’ve left from the doctor’s room when he brought the kid in, or at least when he heard the kid would be alright. And it ends with him showing up at midnight, right before Yuriko is about to leave and everything turns out great... But he was supposed to meet her at seven. He was five hours late! I think it should’ve ended with Yuriko kicking him in the balls and then just walked away.

The “red light” thing was pretty intruiging though.

And the final part was actaully pretty good; Yamamoto became a decent captain, if only for a little while, Wang finally made his move, we (kinda) find out who attacked the transports with the red light and magnetic waves and the Soyokaze met it’s end. I guess the main thing I would complain about here is that IT STOPPED MIDWAY! I mean what the hell? I plowed myself through all that just to see it end like this? I’m guessing there were no more source material, but i still think they should’ve done something different. I know most endings that stray away from the source material tend to suck, but i still prefer them to make some kind of ending.

Animation/Artwork/Visual Effects: 5.5/10

The animation is actually worse here. I thought it would be much better since that’s always been the case with the OVA continuations I've seen iirc. The character designs are much worse as well. Especially with Yuriko. I despise her new design. Although that may have something to do with the fact that I really liked the original look of the show. I can’t even recall any well animated scenes right now either.

Sound: 8/10

This has the same quality, even though the music sounds more “japanese” here than it did in the TV series. I mean, in the TV series there were more trumpet music and such and here it’s that kind of windpipe sound. I know it’s not a good explanation, but I can’t think of any better. Anyway, while I slightly prefer the “trumpet” sound, I don’t recall there being any horrid keyboard-only songs playing in the background. I’m thankful for that.

Characters: 3/10

Yuriko was lame here compared to the TV show. Tylor fortunately didn’t get much screen time. And when he did get some time, with the exception of the final two episodes where he did nothing wrong in my book, he (liked I stated before) pissed me off to no end. Even more than he did in the TV show.

Yamamoto was good here too, Dom was a bit stronger emtionally and mentally and even a bit wilder, which I liked, Harumi was basicly cut out of the show, the empress was as annoying as usual, Andersson got a kind of a nice backstory and the rest were the same.

Overall: 3.5/10

Just terrible. I mean overall I didn’t like the TV series, but this was much worse, in almost every way. The only things I liked here were the red light mystery, which they didn’t even see through, the fact that yamamoto was still good here and in serious parts he was even better here and that the sound was still great.
