Both feature heavy spiritual content. Although Gingitsune is not so much romantic they have a very similar feel about the relationship that humans have to the spirit world.

Bronia Bronia says...

Both are all about a mortal girl's interactions with the devine. They touch on mortality and how it effects the relationship between the deity and their human friend. Both often have sad tones, although Gingitsune throws in more humor than Hotarubi.

Both anime have mortals interacting with gods. Although Inari Konkon has not finished at the time of writing, it has been mentioned in the show how mortals are bound to die and leave their god friends behind. Hotarubi focuses very strongly on that theme. Both also have pretty animation and romance!

Both of these are very sweet. They are both tear-jerking love stories with funny sides. They both have fantasy elements like wizards and spirits. I just know that if you love one you will LOVE the other.

Gunpowder Gunpowder says...

They have an entirely different story, but the way the two main protagonists interact with each other is very similar, as well as the "creatures" that are shown. Both movies are also "entertainment for the whole family."

If you love Your Name then you'll Hotarubi no Mori e and vise versa. Both are about 2 people meeting in very unusual times and or places as both protagonists don't ask for these encounters but eventually enjoy. With both being heartwrenching, heartwarming, and painful goodbyes. The characters are lovable, warm, and beautifully created not to mention the story and pain are conveyed so strongly it's a masterpiece. But this is also my opinion as well as what I truly believe.

Very similar. Romance, super natural, slice of life and kind of like loning and sadness. They end in a similar way where things aren't really explaned so it leaves this interesting and exciting feeling.

With only her legs beneath her, she runs towards the Black Forest, hoping to get there in time...

They may seem not to have much in common, yet the feeling while watching them is so similar - warm, melancholic. Both are short, slow-paced animes with similar main pratagonists: a little brave girl and a boy who isn't who he seems to be at the first glance. The storyline of each is tottaly different, but i think you may like one if you liked the other. (They are my two favourites animes.)

Recollections of a Certain Pilot and Hotarubi no Mori e may not look it, but they are certaintly similar when it comes to their characters. Two characters meet and bond, but in the end, will they be able to stay together? Both movies are very bittersweet and contain beautiful animation, and the main focus is the relationship between the two main characters. Although they may be different in genre and setting, don't be fooled; if you enjoyed the character bonding in Recollections of a Certain Pilot or Hotarubi no Mori, you will definitely want to check out the other.

Even though they have quite different story lines, the feel of both of these animes are the same. Both protagonists are girls who meet a boy that they grow close to. Romantic feelings are more or less present, but they are not fully explored. Instead, it's the friendship between them that florishes. Da Yu Hai Tang has a lot more fantasy elements, and Hotaru no Mori e has more drama elements. I truly enjoyed both of them and I believe that if you like one, you'll like the other one as well.
