Although the stories are quite different (fantasy "magical girl" Hime-chan vs. real-world "miracle girl" Yawara-san), these two anime share a number of qualities. They are old-school hand-drawn anime, with a strong cast of characters, and they both focus on the difficulties of being young and female and subjected to all the expectations of other people, while still being in the dark about one's own hopes and dreams.

Daa! Daa! Daa!

Daa! Daa! Daa!

Miyu's parents have big dreams: her mother wants to explore the universe and meet aliens, and her father wants to develop a new space shuttle. In order to accomplish their goals they decide to work at NASA; but due to their inevitably busy schedules, Miyu is sent to live with a friend of the family. On the day she arrives at her new home, her caretaker leaves on a religious pilgrimage, leaving her alone with his son Kanata. To top it off, an alien baby crashes into the house that night! The ship is too damaged to fly so the baby and his pet/baby sitter decide to live with Miyu and Kanata until help arrives, whenever that may be. How can two unrelated middle school kids learn to live together while raising a baby that insists on calling them mom and dad?

Daa Daa Daa and Hime-chan's Ribbon both have a blond and whiny protagonist realizing her feelings of love for the one closest to her. I find that both anime go through dilemmas of the same kind, with a side of magic. Almost anything is possible in Hime-chan's Ribbon as well as Daa Daa Daa - this certainly makes things fun. The main characters are extremely likeable, and Ruu is very cute.

Fancy Lala

Fancy Lala

Miho Shinohara is a typical 9-year-old who is fascinated with showbiz and dreams of stardom. One day she meets a stranger who gives her 2 dolls, who later reveal themselves as magical dinosaurs named Pigu and Megu! They give her the special ability to draw clothing on a special drawing pad and turn it into reality, as well as transform her body into a teenager’s. One day, by chance, she is spotted by the president of a talent agency, Lyrical Productions. She lands her first job as a model, hence taking her first step into showbiz; but the road to stardom is still long and challenging. Can she, disguised as Lala, become an idol?

Fancy Lala and Hime-chan's Ribbon are both mahou shoujo series that aren't heavy in the "magical" area, but are still quite girly. The two series are more focused on the daily problems we face; and they show that life isn't easy, even if we have magic. I definitely think that both titles have a similar direction sense. There's some hints of romance, and the main characters are both naive, but strong-minded. Hime-chan's Ribbon and Fancy Lala will give you a great lingering impression.

Ultra Maniac

Ultra Maniac

Sakura Nina, a magic girl from the Magic Kingdom, comes to the human world to continue her training. It would have been a simple scenario, if not for the fact that Nina's magic skills are subpar at best. Nina and her best friend Ayu subsequently find themselves turning normal high school life into crazy adventures, day after day, with a magical twist. But as time goes on, there are questions that must be answered -- why is Nina really in the human world? And why is her childhood friend, a black magic user named Maya, in the human world as well?
