Both Elfen Lied and Highschool of the Dead are filled with blood. The creators don't hodl back when it comes to blood. They are both full of violence and gore. They are just both awesome.

eaper eaper says...

Both of these series contain a lot of graphic places, both physically and ecchi wise (although HSotD barely slows down any on the ecchi) and have a rather dark tone throughout the series.

KittyEmperor KittyEmperor says...

Ecchi and violence do I need to say more...okay I will.  While the main story of both series is fairly different the main focus of each series is not and that is to entertain the viewer with scenes of complete/partial nudity and lots of gore.  With an overall dark tone to both series if you've already seen one of them then you should strongly consider checking out the other.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

Action packed gore and violence are seen in High School of the Dead and Elfen Lied.  Each series involving high school aged people taking on some element of the undead or supernatural. Both series with graphic scenes of the gore and ecchi nature for some entertainment.

fat10 fat10 says...

If you liked High School Of The Dead, you will also like Elfen Lied, because they are two heavy anime, where there is no censorship in the blood, or violence. And that mixed with Ecchi. The story is dramatic, and you will certainly enjoy watching Elfen Lied.

RedCrossRobbery RedCrossRobbery says...

Although theres story lines aren't in any way, shape or form close, what brings these two series together is the gore. Both showcase fantastical gruesome amounts of gratuitous gore, and leave you feeling unclean and depressed at some of the scenes.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Blood and gore, powerful women, and ecchi scenes galore. The animation styles are also similar. While the plots might be different, both play on human emotions.

sothis sothis says...

Elfen Lied and Highschool of the Dead are two heavily ecchi, heavily gory titles that will easily appeal to the same audiences. I preferred Highschool of the two, but you'd likely appreciate both.

deideiblueeyez deideiblueeyez says...

Both are gore fests with some light being shone on the darker side of humanity as one of the main themes. Highschool of the Dead will show peoples' greed and selfishness and resorting to baser instincts in order to survive, while Elfen Lied's main focus is the prejudice and suspicion that sometimes overwhelms and controls people to do terrible things to those undeserving.

Nakedness abounds in Elfen Lied, while extreme near-nakedness and panty-shots and fanservice are stuffed into nearly every scene of Highschool of the Dead. Both combine splattered heads with lots of ecchi, so if you're a fan of this oddly-satisfying combination, try either or.

jypsel jypsel says...

Both High School of the Dead (HotD) and Elfen Lied are animes that are characterized by their violence and dark undertones.  What stood out the most to me is that both of these animes put slapstick comedy in the middle of what would be a terrible situation to sometimes lighten the mood - they also hold nothing back when it comes to ecchi.  If you liked one, give the other a shot.

RavenheartN1Anime RavenheartN1Anime says...

Highschool of the Dead and Resident Evil nearly share everything at plot and story.

An infectious virus is running loose and if you are bitten by a carrier, you'll become one of them.

Thus, both share the virus plot and the surviving plot.

chii chii says...

Both have zombies in them and people must fight to survive against them. Highschool of the Dead take on a story about the first outbreak where Resident Evil certain people are aware and fight to stop those responcible. Lots of action and gut wrenching scenes both are sure to please the zombie lover in you.

scizorg45 scizorg45 says...

Without resident evil, there'd be no HOTD, duh. Things they have in common are: Zombies, people desperately fighting for their survival, useless governments and of course more zombies. You should see HOTD as a guide to what normal people would do, as opposed to what government people would do.

If you liked one, check out the other.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

HotD and RE:D have much of the premise, there's a zombie outbreak and people needing to deal with it, in common. Both of them also have their fair share of high-octane action caused by said outbreak, so if you liked one of them and want more zombie-slaying action you might consider checking out the other one.

KittyEmperor KittyEmperor says...

Both for the most part completely center around a group of people who try to survive as a horde of zombies come after them.  I mean seriously do you need more of a reason than the fact that they both have zombies to watch either of these.  But if so then both series also feature a rather nice amount of action though Highschool of the Dead does have ecchi in it as opposed to Resident Evil which has none.  If you liked one and are a zombie lover then you should really checkout the other.

juanjose1989 juanjose1989 says...

Both of the series have alot of gun and action if you like one you'll like the other. They also have a good story and leave you wanting more.

WhenTheyCry24 WhenTheyCry24 says...

As seen in both; Resident Evil and Highschool of the Dead, it portrays similar circumstances where a group of survivors must escape and fight their way through an "outbreak" of a zombie-like apocalypse to safety. So if zombies are your thing, you can't go by these two titles.

Nicknames Nicknames says...

Both shows feature a group of people who have to fight against hordes of zombies for their survival. Also in both of them people turn into zombies if they are either bitten by one of them or come into contact with the virus that's turning people into one of them. Highschool of the Dead is a tad more ecchi than Resident Evil, but if you liked it and you want something similar, but with less giant boobs and male gaze then you should check RE: Degeneration. Likewise, if you liked RE: Degeneration and you don't mind getting some ecchi in between the action bits then you should give Highschool of the Dead a shot.

Shiki

One summer, a series of mysterious and untimely fatalities begins to plague the small rural town. If you have seen Shiki or HotD and you feel warm inside when you think about all the blood and violence then you should definitely check out the other.

RedCrossRobbery RedCrossRobbery says...

Highschool of the Dead and Shiki are both relatively new animes, that truly capture what it is to be a good horror. The graphics are astounding, the humans are both terrified, and brave, and the enemies are familiar.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these anime deal with monster pandemics, have some interesting fashion choices, and for much of the anime centers on the teenage population dealing with the sudden outbreak. While Shiki has vampires, and Highschool has zombies, they both deal with horde-like monsters.

thebarfscarf thebarfscarf says...

Both are horror genres that I tend to avoid, which are zombies and vampires. Only solidified by the recent popularity of Twilight, I have never liked vampires, however Shiki was instantly riveting and continued to be throughout the entirey of its duration. I never once felt like "oh crap, another predictable vampire story". It has something indredibly special. So if you're about to pass this series over just because of the vampire thing, think again because I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Highschool of the Dead didn't compltely obliterate my zombie stereotypes. I've always felt that most zombie stories are similar. And Highschool of the Dead was no different. On the other hand, it had a strong cast of characters and developed them in an enjoyable way. I don't compeltely understand the whole "ecchi" thing, I guess. I felt that all the nudity was relatively unnecessary and proved a lot of people's negative stereotypes about anime. Defintaely, Shiki's the better series, as far as holding your interest with an amazing mood and tone. But I would definately reccomend both of them.

Leahchu Leahchu says...

Each anime focuses on the loss of human life to supernatural/horror elements. HOTD uses zombies while Shiki uses vampires to create a sense of human fragility, where a moment of weakness can lead to the eradication of multiple people. Both shows are graphic in their violence and feature lots of blood. Both shows are stuck in a singular town, with the main cast of humans fighting hard to outlast this catastrophe, even from their fellow survivors at times.

JustAkeno JustAkeno says...

Honestly, when I was 13, HS of the dead was like the best anime ever to my 13y/o horny mind. Then I got a little older, and I tried Shiki. I think both anime are worth watching, especially Shiki.

Shiki provides an incredibly interesting twist on the "Vampire" genre. It will satisfy any gore/vampire genre fan.

HS of the Dead is a little more 'typical', but nonetheless, I really enjoyed it as a kid.

Both anime target a noticeably different audience, but both are enjoyable.

Both anime feature a group of students trapped in a school full of zombies, and they must find a way to survive. The only difference between them is that Gakkou Gurashi focus more in being cute and dark at the same time while Highschool of the Dead is an ecchi show.

Both shows are about a zombie appocalypse. While High School of the Dead features more shounen action, School-Live! is more about survival and drama.

If you are a fan of the zombie genre, be sure to check them both. Very good shows, in my opinion.

saiyamar saiyamar says...

Both anime start with the same premise of school students trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. HOTD is definitely more shounen with heavy blood, battle and ecchi content dealing more with the outside world and the general fight for survival... whereas GG/SL is based almost entirely within the school and focuses more on characters and their emotional and psycological responses to the event. If you enjoyed one you should probably try out the other.

alp2va alp2va says...

Zombies, highschoolers, crude humor, oh my! Both have very similar premises but are executed extremely differently. Highschool of the Dead is very gritty and ripe with explicit shots of highschool girls. School Live is more about coping with reality and leaving the viewer uneasy by having the main character have no idea what is really going on around her.

jaysah925 jaysah925 says...

watching Highschool of the Dead reminds me of Higurashi--albeit with a lot of ecchi. this series really holds nothing back, as far as the violence goes. Higurashi is the same in that it captures the expressions of the characters really well. if you liked one, chances are you'll like the other.

VeSteN VeSteN says...

The feeling of a cold chill slowly crawling its way up your spine... the feeling of dread as you watch the world's sense of humanity dwindling into the night... and the feeling of excitement as you eagerly feast your eyes on the next episode are all trademarks of Higurashi and Highschool of the Dead. They both deal with the same interesting topic... "In the face of danger would you forsake your humanity?"

Both are very interesting and very thrilling to watch. Higurashi leans towards the "creepy and disturbing" but nontheless entertaining; while Highschool of the Dead (a.k.a H.O.T.D) has many exhilerating action scenes which leave you begging for more.

H.O.T.D while having an interesting and very creepy foundation (world overrun by zombies, survival of the fittest) doesn't quite make the cut as a "horror" anime but rather an "adventure" anime, because of all the action scenes. Higurashi on the other hand has a much more gloomy, tense, grotesque and disturbing element to it which is surprisingly addictive (a warning though, Higurashi is NOT for the faint of heart, the very first scene of the very first episode is enough to turn off anybody who isn't a fan of horror.)

H.O.T.D has a much broader "scope" in that the world has been overrun by zombies a la Resident Evil and there is no "safe place" in the world. The sane have been driven mad from paranoia and succumbed to their primal instinct of "survival of the fittest." On the other hand, Higurashi takes place in a small village secluded from the city, which only adds to the creepy element; because of the village's seclusion there is no place to run for safety (unless you run for a couple of hours.)

From the superficial description provided it would appear that these two animes are vastly different; however they are the same in that they provoke the viewer to delve deeper for "what it means to be human" H.O.T.D capitalizes it while Higurashi may not directly pose this question to the viewer. All in all, both are very good animes and if you enjoyed one you would certainly enjoy the other.

eaper eaper says...

Each of these series are rather graphic, pushing what the viewer sees. They also each have some supernatural elements in them along with a rather dark tone throughout. HSotD is, however, extremely ecchi, while Higurashi is just very graphic in places.

KittyEmperor KittyEmperor says...

Probably the strongest point of both series in my opinion are the graphics.  Both series aren't afraid to show some of the mor graphic violence that they have to offer.  While Highschool of the Dead as a lot more ecchi in than Higurashi which has little to none ecchi in it both series have a main plot the resolve around mysterous circumstances that keep the viewer wondering.  With their rather dark tone and story watching either one is an extremely enjoyable experience for the viewer.

Issengard Issengard says...

Both animes have gore, are kind of disturbing and had fanservice. Higschool of the Dead is like The Walking Dead meets Higurashi.

Xdust5 Xdust5 says...

Both are violent, intense shows with deceptively deep plots and incredible stories. When new they were both over the top (HOTD especially) however those over the top elements have aged particularly well. While different sides of the hyperviolent heavy story driven coin, both are masterpieces.

Gantz and HSOTD have zero in similarity in plot, but they both are gore and ecchi filled series that will surely interest the same parties. Gore level is on par, though HSOTD has way more ridiculous/stupid ecchi (ie boobs as big as an upper body) than Gantz. Still, fans of one should appreciate the other.

Both Highschool of the Dead and GANTZ are very gorey, however, GANTZ has alot more gore, violence and exploding heads.

Both have fanservice, however in GANTZ, the fanserver is far more extreme. They will take off all their clothes and "insert", if you liked the fanservice here you'll most likely enjoy GANTZ's fanservice aswell.

Just to warn you though, if you were somehow upset when a character in Highschool of the Dead passed away, you'll probably have a heart attack with GANTZ.

Both are great animes, they are both gorey and full of fanservice (+romance).

GameMasterPhoenix GameMasterPhoenix says...

Should the main characters in Gantz and HOTD ever meet, they would find that they have quite a few things in common. In both series, the protagonist is an average high school student leading a perfectly normal life--until some earth-shaking event throws them into a world full of violence and nearly-naked women.

If you like fluid action scenes rife with gory violence coupled with seemingly unnecessary segments of ecchi fanservice, either of these anime is for you.

Both these anime revolve around the central theme of a group of young people attempting to survive when suddenly and dramatically faced with monsters. The main protaganists in each have an overwhelming survuval instinct that gets them through hopless looking situations. They both contain graphic violence and echhi. Gantz has a deeper and more compelling story but like one and I am sure you will enjoy the other.
