Both Heroic Age and Fafner come from Xebec (Animation Production & Original Creator). Which is why the animation is very similiar in most area: mecha, charakters & light effects.

There is also similiarity in music, especially the opening music in both serie.

Harbin Harbin says...

The plot in Fafner is pretty much the same as Heroic Age: a single boy must save the "world."  Both boys have similar character designs.  The opening themes are also written and sung by the same person, Ubukata Tou. Therefore, if you liked Heroic Age, you're sure to like Fafner.

Sandineyes Sandineyes says...

If you like Heroic Age, then Fafner will definitely please. The action and quality of animation are rather similer, and fafner has a similar story to Heroic Age. Fafner also excels in the character department, so no matter how you felt about Heroic Age's cast, you will be impressed by Fafner.

At the start of both Gargantia and Heroic Age, you get a fateful meeting between a civilisation and a mecha hero. the hero then proceeds to learn a lot from his new hosts by living and working with them, and also protecting them. Both these shows are really about a clash of races and a hero forced to overcome his naivity in order to bring about justice. They're also significantly about their worldbuilding and the interesting philosophical questions that arise as a result. If you enjoyed these things about one show, definitely check out the other.

Brad Brad says...

Both of these series feature a mecha protagonist who must learn to live, and to work within an alien civilisation, while at the same time protecting them. The world each anime is set in plays an important role in both, with Gargantia especially being pretty unique.

History has always been paved by great men and women who, with causes to fight for, partake in a grand undertaking that will change the world around them. Utawarerumono and Heroic Age tell of such a tale with masterful skill. The wonderful stories aside, the art and animation that exists between the two is simply outstanding. Be it seeing thousands of soldiers moving simultaneously in a battlefield or seeing space warships firing cannons in amazing detail, both series never fail to awe her viewers.

Ultimately, time will be invested in watching anime. Yet, if you enjoy watching Utawarerumono or if you indulged yourself in Heroic Age, you will find your time well invested in the other, reaping great rewards of satisfaction.

Epimondas Epimondas says...

Heroic Age and both seasons of Utawarerumono are mech anime but the main or main characters do not use mechs.  In both anime, one or more characters do not pilot a mech but become a monster that is similar to a mech.  The story in Utawarerumono is actually quite similar to Heroic age, in both series, a people is pushed to the brink of extinction only to rise up, rebel, and push back upon their invaders.  The hero of both is almost or is god like compared to most other characters and enemies for one reason or another.  The lead character in both stories is from another world and lacks comprehension and understanding of the world they are exposed in.

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

Neon Genesis Evangelion and Heroic age are examples of the mecha genre. The primary mecha in each are biological entities of massive power that are controlled in a degree by a young boy. Both the design and the disposition of Bellcross and EVA Unit 01 seem similar. Add to that the philisophical undertones of what it means to be human, and you have a number of similarities.

Evangelion is for those who are more interested in heavy philisophical discussion, while Heroic Age is for those looking for a more casual action series. If you enjoyed the action and philosophy of one, you should try out the others take on it.

jurexplay jurexplay says...

Well, in both series the mecha part was made quite originally. They aren't just pieces of metal but living beings. Thinking and deciding by themselves, although in most of the series they are rather obedient to their masters/owners. Both series are fun to watch some even say that NGE is epic series (well, maybe for someone but I would argue).

Toward the Terra TV

Toward the Terra TV

Centuries ago, humanity carelessly ravaged the Earth’s environment, forcing them to leave and form a colony elsewhere. To prevent the same mistakes from happening again, they allow a supercomputer to run their lives. Children are genetically engineered and at the age of fourteen take ‘adulthood exams’, a process whereby the supercomputer ensures they are suitable for membership in this perfect society. Those who pass have their memories erased and are guided into the next stage of their life; those who fail are immediately destroyed. Jomy is a boy about to take his adulthood exams, but things go terribly wrong when a man wreathed in light interrupts the process. He is a Mu -- an aberration, a new generation of human with extraordinary powers usually detected and eliminated by the supercomputer. This man tells Jomy he too is a Mu and introduces him to the Mu society. They are a rebel group in hiding from the oppressive human regime, who live in the hope that they will find a life of peace on Earth some day. Can Jomy leave behind all that he has known, come to terms with his awakening powers, and help the Mu return to their beloved Terra?

Both follow a species as they struggle to survive in the hostile galaxy. The protagonists are very clear view of their objective and put their lives on the line to achieve that goal to save everyone.

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

Both anime are about humanity trying to fulfil their destiny. If you liked the concept of psychics in Heroic Age, the epic feel of the plot, and the emotional way in which it tries to answer big questions about humanity's place in the world, then you should definitely give Toward the Terra TV a go. It is simply better in every way (animation, story, character development), although it takes a little longer than Heroic Age to build up.

Action, large-scale space battles, a tiny bit of comedic relief, drama, mecha and character relations are the best things of both series. I think that after watching one of these animes you will just fall in love with mecha series. Animation is outstanding and main characters are likeable. What possibly would you want more form an anime series?

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

Space journeys with big mecha fights - this is largely what the two have in common. However, Gundam Seed is far better at providing interesting characters and exciting space battles. It also has that epic feel that Heroic Age strive to go for. Definitely don't miss out on Seed if you thought Heroic Age was good stuff.

Katanagatari

Katanagatari

In the wake of a rebellion that shook Japan twenty years prior, Togame Hida, general director and strategist for the army, seeks to obtain the 12 "deviant blades" created by master swordsmith Shikizaki Kiki to help add stability and security to the Bakufu government. To aid in this endeavor, she looks to enlist the help of Yasuri Mutsune, head of the Kyotou-ryu school and hero of the rebellion. But when she arrives on the island where he lives in exile, she finds him dead, succeeded by his skilled yet slightly daft son Shichika. Undeterred, the two set off from the island in search of the swords armed only with Togami's sharp strategic mind and Shichika's powerful, swordless Kyotou-ryu.

The characters of Age and Shichika are remarkably similar: superhumanly powerful yet innocent at heart. Each has a strong female who guides and cherishes him, in her own idiosyncratic way, For both, their journey is a journey of discovery both external and internal, as they learn about the world. Nevertheless, the fundamental innocence at the core of each remains unsullied. If you find either of these heroes to be captivating, you will surely feel the same about the other.

KittyEmperor KittyEmperor says...

To start off with both feature a male lead who is somewhat ignorant of the ways of the world/universe but at the same time they are quite strong that there are few who can stand against them.  In addition they both feature lead females who sort of take on the role of guiding the male lead in the world but at the same time using the male lead's strength inorder to accomplish some sort of goal.  While Heroic Age is a lot more action orienated than Katanagatari both are sure to provide hours of entertainment.

Trigun

Trigun

“Vash, the Stampede” - worth 60 billion dollars to the one who can turn him in. Bounty hunters everywhere are on the lookout for this legendary gunman, not to mention insurance agents Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, who are tasked with preventing any potential damage that this Vash can cause. But with 60 billion on his head, Vash is not an easy man to find.

The main hero of both Heroic Age and Trigun is a goofball, but when it comes down to business he gets it done. It also seems that Age and Vash always know what they are doing even if they are laughing or goofing off. I would recommend both to anyone who asked me.

Appleseed Movie

Appleseed Movie

Seeing as both Heroic Age and Appleseed are futuristic/fantastical mecha anime of a similar style, I believe that those who enjoyed one for these reasons would appreciate the other. But the thing that links these shows the most to me is the vivid, eye-catching art. While it might not be of identical styles, the overall feel is the same. Quite breath-taking, which really adds to the otherworldly/futuristic/surreal feeling that both shows hold.
