Hyouka

Hyouka

"If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I do have to do it, make it quick," is the basic principle by which energy conservationist Houtarou Oreki lives. But after his sister convinces him to join the Classics Club, Houtarou's life is turned upside down when he meets Chitanda, a perpetually-inquisitive girl who challenges the boy's easygoing existence. Intrigued by the slightest hint of a mystery afoot, Chitanda doesn't hesitate to pester the reluctant yet highly analytical Houtarou into satisfying her curiosity at every turn, no matter how small the problem. Alongside fellow members Satoshi and Ibara, the group tackles cases ranging from a self-locking classroom door, a strangely-popular library book, and even the shadowy history of the very club to which they belong!

Both of these shows are essentially mystery shows where the mystery isn't really the main focus, but the people and the stories surrounding said mysteries are. Admittedly Sakurako-san does this better than HaruChika, but the ending of that series kind of let it down a bit. It remains to be seen how HaruChika will fare overall, but if you end up liking it, you'll probably like Sakurako-san too.

First and most obviously, both are shows about brass bands. Further than that, both have a main character who is nosy to the point where she gets involved in everyone's interpersonal drama - which in both series is more likely to be expressed as uncomfortable silences rather than explosive anger.

In both shows, there is an uncomfortable sub-plot around how a character is in love with their teacher, which thankfully remains unrequited. Said teacher is in both cases a famous conductor who quit in order to teach mostly below average high school students for mysterious reasons.

When it comes to characters, the ones in Haruchika are more exaggerated, while Sound! Euphonium leans more towards realism. The same can be said for plot and art. However, if you like one and want more classical music players, it's worth the time to check out the other.

Both are about idiots in a high school club doing random things (in both shows, the random things often end up being solving mysteries). The characters are similar in their larger than life anime style exaggeration, with an energetic girl and her male foil as the main protagonists. Mainly, this recommendation is based on the upbeat tempo that both shows have. If you like one, odds are you'll enjoy the other.
