It is the same idea...one guy and a lot of girls under the same roof. There are even similar character types in both of them.

Dragonstar Dragonstar says...

HAPPY LESSON combines the zaniness of PUNI PUNI POEMY with the harem subgenre of anime. If you enjoy Chitose's situation of having to keep his living arrangements secret while trying to study and get a little nookie on the side, it is done much better in AI YORI AOSHI. In AI YORI AOSHI, the basic gist is a student who lives with a bunch of gals who dig him, but he must keep his true feelings hidden. The zany humor is toned down in AI YORI AOSHI while the romance and sentimentality are increased.

The best harem stories put a premium on what draws the surrounding girls/women to one boy/man to such an extent that each would be willing to live with her competitors in a setting that would be loud at best and absolutely chaotic at worst. Both Ai Yori Aoshi and Happy Lesson do that quite well: the viewer is shown how each member of the harem is specially drawn to the male figure at the center even as the flaws of that figure are shown. Ai Yori Aoshi features Kaoru, a somewhat more likeable and more focused male lead, while Happy Lesson's Chitose is more of an aimless guy who really needs the help of his "mamas" to straighten up and fly right (even if the mamas inevitably overdo it!). I put Ai Yori Aoshi in my top five after viewing only five episodes because (a) I had read all of the manga previously, and (b) I really like the quiet strength of Aoi-chan, someone who is constantly questioning herself yet tracks down her first love in a huge city even after being told their love can never go forward. While Happy Lesson hasn't yet offered, eight episodes in, any single female that is on Aoi-chan's plane, the mamas' collective desire to care for Chitose is the practical equivalent of Aoi-chan's similar caring instinct. For that reason, I recommend both ways here.

Ai Yori Aoshi is a classic in the harem anime genre and since Happy Lesson itself is in the harem genre yet not 100% they should definintely be recommended for eachother. Ai Yori Aoshi is way more ecchi and Happy Lesson is more family friendly but they both present a series of story arcs and take their time intrducing each character in deph. If you like one I'm sure you'll love the other.

Like harem series where one guy ends up having all sorts of crazy things happen to him due to the women around him? Look no further than Love Hina and Happy Lesson. While the women in Happy Lesson are more supportive towards the main character and the women of Love Hina are more violent, they both have the same atmosphere and humor overall. If you enjoyed one, you are sure to enjoy the other.

dstarfire dstarfire says...

Both Happy Lesson and Love Hina feature the ever popular Harem theme wherein a male teenager is surrounded-by/living-with several females of varying archetypes leading to many hilarious misadventures, often caused by one or more characters' well-intentioned, but poorly thought out plan.

Jdogtoocool Jdogtoocool says...

I agree with the above comments, Love Hina and Happy Lesson are fun harems with a very similar layout. Even though in one the love interest is somewhat clear, in Happy Lesson it's a lot more difficult to pinpoint exactly what is going on in the romance department. Both anime know how to present their characters and keep a really good pace when it comes to story arcs and story progression. If you like one I'm sure you'll love the other.

Angel Tales

Angel Tales

Goro Mutsumi is a young man that never seems to catch a break; he has a hard time keeping a job, has horrible luck, and continuously finds himself in bad circumstances.  However, things change one day when he comes home - having been fired yet again - and finds three young girls sitting in his apartment. They're the reincarnated angels of his deceased pets, and they're here to turn his luck around given how well he treated them in their past lives. While the idea sounds like a godsend, things don't go quite according to plan; the angels tend to cause more harm than good, and twelve altogether end up joining Goro's cramped household! In addition to learning how to co-exist with his newly acquired roommates, Goro must also defend them and himself against four sacred beasts who are after him for mysterious reasons. One thing's for certain: Goro's life will never be the same!

Both series engulf the watcher with waves of happiness. They're slightly different from the standard harem series. All females want only the male's happiness, there is also no hidden romance feeling between the main characters, everything is in the open more or less (except some subplots). They feature lots of humour and only little ecchi. If youve liked one of them the other one is the right choice.

Ran Ran says...

In both Angel Tales and Happy Lesson, a boy is taken care of by, in one case, a group of angels; and in the other case, a group of teachers. This of course causes some commotions and leads to funny situations. Both anime give a similar feeling, so if you liked one, you're likely to appreciate the other one too.

Happy Lesson and Urusei Yatsura both feature a main character that is the unwilling recipient of female affection. The comedy peaks when the same main characters unwittingly ignite the jealous rage of their female acquaintances by showering their attentions on other girls. Cute characters, funny anime, what more do you want?

While Guu has a lot more 'randomness' to it, it's comedy is along the same lines as far as delivery (a normal guy set with a bunch of weird characters), as well as having a very low amount of sexual humor, which is a good thing, IMO.

My personal favorite Tenchi Muyo! is my recommendation to watch if you liked Happy Lesson. Both are a comedy/romance anime with 1 guy surrounded by numerous females in one way or another attracted to him. This series will make you laugh and blush at the same time. While Tenchi Muyo! adds a more fantasy like approach to it, they will both fullfil your hunger for romance and comedy. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

It's every guy's fantasy.... to be living (as the sole guy) under one roof surrounded by gorgeous women who loves you and wants to pamper you and is ready to cater to your every need.... it's been done numerous times in the past but I guess some of us just can't get enough of it! They both have a consistently light and funny overtone. Allthough nothing of real great importance happens in any of these two animes, watching the day to day lives of the male protagonist trying to live his life together with a bunch of women usually leads to often humorous situations. Overall I liked happy lesson better because I thought it was funnier and the characters were more interesting but if you like one, you'll probably like the other as well. Or if you are a fan of this type of genre then I'm sure that you will definitely like these two series!

Ah My Goddess and Happy Lesson center around a lonely student surrounded by girls who try to help him. While Happy Lesson focuses more on wacky hijinks and Ah My Goddess focuses more on relationships, I think you will find a lot of common and enjoy one if you enjoyed the other.
