Both are action shows which follows an underdog boxer making their way to the top. Both are filled with intense fights that will keep you at the edge of the seat and very likeable characters. The main difference between both of them is that Megalo Box adds some futuristic elements to the show and lacks the juvenile humour Hajime no Ippo has, but if that's not a problem for you then give one of them a shot if you like the other!

captanmurdoc captanmurdoc says...

These two series are both filled with that good ole boxing action that will knock you out of chair and leave you begging for more. The settings and stories are different but the hype when they step into the ring are the same.

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

Hajime no Ippo is ultimately a superior show (more memorable characters, more enjoyable animation, better fights), but if you enjoyed the boxing vehicle that drives the high stakes "battles" between likeable characters in one show, you will likely enjoy the same in the other. They both stick closely to the sports anime formula but Megalo Box offers an original twist in the form of post-apocalyptic looking world and inventive tech.

I'll tell you other than sports anime it's hard to find a anime to recommend for hajime no ippo. But, I think you will find scryed to be appealing. It has nothing todo about sports but you will enjoy the heated battles and straight foward plot of this anime. In my opinion both main characters of this anime have a similar personality. Always moving forward never stepping back.

Inalucard Inalucard says...

both are fighting, action packed, head strong, get stronger type of shows.  I imagine both shows are equally suited as a recommendation, with s-cry-ed being more super-power than hajime-no-ippo's (Slightly overemphasised) realistic attackes.

Great Teacher Onizuka

Great Teacher Onizuka

With a history of leading a motorcycle gang and getting bad grades in school, why would 22 year old Onizuka ever want to become a teacher? Is it to educate young minds or spread the joy of education? Sure, if it involves being able to look up high school girls' skirts! Watch as this would-be educator uses his own life lessons and unconstituted methods as a means to control a delinquent class of students -- students who certainly aren't as happy to have him as a teacher as he is happy to be teaching...

Hajime no Ippo and GTO both have the same kind of humor, and I find the drawing styles somewhat similar. The over all _feeling_ of the two are however very similar, and I really think that if you like one that you would like the other.

exekillan exekillan says...

I find the humor in both these animes somewhat similar. Other that that they both have fighting. In Hajime no Ippo most of the story is about fighting. But in GTO the story is about a guy who used to run a gang becoming a teacher, so it has some occasional fight scenes.I think if you liked one you will probably like the other aswell. ^^

Though not the same type of sports anime, Hajime no Ippo and Ayane's High Kick are somewhat similar. Both main characters are people pursue their sports when given the opportunity to advance. In both animes, you see Ayane and Ippo get built from scratch into tomorrow's champions. Some of the locations are similar, too; for instance, both Ippo and Ayane fight in Kourakuen Hall, a real life venue where actual boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and mixed martial arts bouts are held.

Nicknames Nicknames says...

There are a good chunk of similarities between both anime. They follow a school student who’s naturally talented at a specific combat sport (kick boxing in Ayane’s High Kick and boxing in Hajime no Ippo) and all the difficulties they have to overcome to become the best. They also have a good mix of comedy and intense fights. Ayane's High Kick is more like an introduction to its source material and thus is incomplete, but anybody who liked Ippo should give it a try. On the other hand, if you liked Ayane’s High Kick and you haven’t watched the longer yet fantastic Hajime no Ippo, don’t hesitate and do so.

Both Hajime no Ippo and Kenshin use more realistic powers which is somewhat rare in shounen anime. The main characters also share some resemblances as they have a funny side and a serious asswhooping counterpart. (Though Kenshin uses actual double personalities.)

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

Looking for unparallel shounen fighting to make you weep manly tears? You can turn to either Rurouni Kenshin or Hajime no Ippo. Both provide duels of incredible excitement between super-awesome characters that'll move you for all their tragedy. The one thing to look out for is the incessant filler in Rurouni Kenshin, which doesn't exist in Hajime no Ippo. But if you like one, you'll find the same kinds of thrills in the other.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

These are both sports anime about underdogs with big hearts learning to love their chosen sport. The sports may be different, but the themes are and character types are very similar.

Hajime no Ippo is about boxing whereas Ace of Diamond is about Baseball so the sports are quite different, but both take the same approach of building their characters through rigorous training and learning from their experiences during games or matches. Both anime show the value of hard work and training while also adding a strong lesson about the role of willpower and courage.

Hajime no Ippo is hands down the superior anime with better characters, better fights, better plot and more satisfying development. Ace of Diamond is a much more generic anime that follows the pattern of every underdog story that's ever been written. Ippo is also a much more likable protagonist than Ace of Diamond's Sawamura.

However, if you love sports or sports anime, or even if you're looking for an inspirational story then you should try these titles.

JohnWatchAnime JohnWatchAnime says...

both anime are about sports and the protagonists both love what they do. They push themselfs to become better at what they do.

Eventhough the shows are about different kind of sports they have the same feeling to it, beeing that the potagonists keep going by willpower and great effort

Parallels can be drawn between Ippo and Gattsu. Both fight every fight as if it was their last. Ippo uses his fist, Gattsu uses a sword. They both fight against insurmountable odds and rise to the challenge. They both start off under the yoke of a stronger, more experienced leader (Ippo with Takamura, Gattsu with Griffith) but become equally powerful and start to forge their own legacy by the story's end. At time of writing both are still being continued in manga form, so if you like a nice, long well-crafted story then either will satisfy nicely.

On the face of it, both shows (Ippo and One Piece) are highly contrasting. But if you dig deeper, both main characters have a dream which they are striving to realise and willing to fight tooth and nail for. They are surrounded with strong people who help them along the way, and provide different 'rivers' for the story to flow along. You form an emotional attachment with each character, coming to understand why, what and who they are fighting for. Both shows are masterpieces of storytelling. Don't dismiss One Piece as a kiddie's show, because Ippo isn't just a sports anime, is it?
