Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends - Reviews

There's a reason you don't have friends.

Fun harem with nice chara design, especially Kobato and Maria <3. Yozora's chara is complex, but seems inconsistent at times - courageous cross-dresser, then tsundere loner, then sadistic bitch and bully, then kind childhood friend...I don't know, it didn't all add up to me at times. I'm wondering if they can reconcile her chara in the second season (haven't seen it yet). I like that the male lead, Kodaka, isn't a doormat like in many other harem animes, and I found the references to him being "hafu" (half white half jap) and perceived as a "delinquent" by his peers intriguing. I think the biggest drawback for the anime was Yozora's chara being too sadistic and too much of a bully, for me it just seemed inconsistent with her other chara traits and made me hate her for being constantly cruel to Sena. The Sena/Yozora back-and-forth just got tiresome after a while.

I found that the story and characters were refreshing and new. However, the thing that held the series back was the lack of any real progressing in the story other than that of Kodaka and his memories of his childhood friend. The anime has a really open-ended conclusion, and that is of course due to the fact that the light novel series is still in progress, but I felt that they could've done better with the anime adaption. I'm definitely going to read the light novels now. If they make a second season, I'll gladly watch it, but I hope that it will have a more stronger story development.

At first I want to point out that Haganai is definitely no harem at all, although the intro and breaks (yeah... whatever that "woman-boy" was meant to be :/) tell something different. This is just one example that shows the actual problem I want to mention: Sadly the story has no real "guideline" and is lost in some unimportant "tales about friends with weird traits and problems". But that does not mean the anime is bad at all. No it was surprisingly funny in some weird way and really had me caught for the whole 2 seasons. However I have to admit that I don't want see it again, instead I will remember it as a "transitional anime", which made fun to watch but had no potential to be one of the best or favorite series.

Probably the most basic highschool romcom imaginable, and I mean that in the worst way. The story is non-existent, the characters basically never develop, a lot of the side characters are just annoying or boring anyway. Don't think I laughed a single time either. The only things I enjoyed about this anime was the mc's personality and it's visual aesthetic at times. That being said, the actual animation is pretty lazy, cutting to stills and off shots when even the smallest amount of action is supposed to have happened. I wouldn't ever recommend this, not even sure why I finished it.
