Both are written and directed by Tomino, who is pretty much the father of all Gundam, and if you have started Reconguista this season, I recommend that you check out some of his earlier works with Gundam.

0080: War in the Pocket is a short OVA that perfectly illustrates the idiocy of the UC war, showing the whole thing from the perspective of a child and the 2 soldiers he befriends. Reconguista is part of this same timeline, though far into the future, so far it doesn't have the same sparseness of story telling that War in the Pocket had, but it is unmistakebly the same director behind it, already showing a darkness to come in some of the characters, and the political intrigue has already seemed to rear it's head.

I feel that any new Gundam fans that are checking out this new season, would enjoy this older show too, and fans of the old show, would find a lot of welcome familiarity in this new addition to the UC Gundam story.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

Beginning four years after the one year war, 0083 starts with the arrival of two new Gundam units to be used for gravity testing. Things take a turn for the worse when members of Zeon steal Unit 2 and the nuclear warhead it that it has been armed with. Young test pilot-in-training Kou Uraki, piloting Gundam Unit 1, must now capture the stolen Gundam before it can be used to fulfill Zeon's mysterious "Operation Stardust".

If you have started the new season with Gundam Reconguista in G, and you haven't seen some of the older Tomino directed shows, then these short OVA's are a great place to start.

0073: Stardust Memory, is in my opinion, one of the best storylines in all of the UC stories, it has some of the best villains and good guys in all of Gundam, mainly because the lines between what is "good" and "bad" are blurred quite early on.

It's too early to tell how Reconguista will pan out, but it will be a longer series than 0073: Stardust memory, though I believe that fans new to the Gundam series would enjoy the previous shows that take place within the same timeline, and likewise, older fans would enjoy the new show.

Sharing a director and character designer is not the only thing that makes me recommend these two series.

They both have a frenetic energy that will almost make you go, (woa man, slooooow dooown) as they toss you into the mix and action.  In the case of King Gainer, once the story takes traction it does work.

The animation quality of both series is very solid and in the case of Gundam, the mecha "looks" a lot more hand-drawn.
