Both of these shows belong to the dark fantasy genre and they deal with some sensitive topics. Goblin Slayer isn't isekai, but it has the "another world" feeling to it

TitaniumTits TitaniumTits says...

Both are fairly dark stories but we see the evolution of their relationship as the story progresses. Shield hero is an isekai but it feels very similar to the adventuring style of Goblin Slayer. Both also have great fight scenes.

Jaimefm Jaimefm says...

Both anime have dark themes. Shield Hero is an isekai and Goblin Slayer is for more mature audiences, but both have similar adventuring styles.

well both the protogonist are intresting and both has someting new to show

both are harem both are LIGHT NOVEL ADAPTION

Veenala Veenala says...

Both main charachters don't have a good relationship with people but indifferent ways, however with the help of people around them they start to grow.

The main character in rising of the shield hero/tate no yuusha is outcasted because of something he does not have control of and faces a mental struggle because of it. Whilst the mc in goblin slayer is silent and blunt he has the struggle of getting on with others on a basic level as his sole focus is goblins.

They are both the unknown hero type that gets slowly brought to light.

rollingbones rollingbones says...

Both stories are dark in their essesnse and the protagonist suffers a cruel fate but is systematically overcoming hurdles in order to move forward

Astronvl Astronvl says...

The Rising of the Shield Hero and Goblin Slayer, both the mc's want revenge, and they are set in a world of monsters. The 2 MC's both get conpanions on the way and they're both pretty OP.

Grimshtod Grimshtod says...

Both anime feature a quiet closely-guarded protagonist. Both the Shield Hero and the Goblin Slayer struggle with issues of rage and revenge/forgiveness. Good character development.

Large elements of the importance of friendship and teamwork, and the advantages of forming a party. (both for adventuring and for ones-wellbeing). Both anime are dark fantasy featuring graphic fantasy violence.

Both anime have moments of comic relief but the tone remains dark and serious throughout.

Both anime should come with a trigger warning for sexual violence. Goblin Slayer especially.

dboisvert dboisvert says...

Both anime are based heavily on rpg games.

The rising of the shield hero is more story driven than combat driven and it is very entertaining thus far (S2).

Goblin Slayer has a slightly darker story, but is based more around the combat and fighting.

ilyesniper20 ilyesniper20 says...

they both have that revenge theme, they both travel with a young girl and train her in the same time

GenXotaku1971 GenXotaku1971 says...

Both are gritty fantasy stories; One is Isekai (Shield Hero) while one is straight fantasy (Goblin Slayer).  Both have misunderstood protagonists who protect the world anyway.  Not for the squeamish as both include plot points revolving around rape and accusations of rape.  Goblin Slayer is an homage to tabletop RPGs whilst Shield Hero mimics the mechanics of an online JRPG where one has to make do with a sub-optimal character class, playing on HARD mode.

if you're seeking anime that centers around main characters seeking revenge for being wronged then check no further.  both centered around monsters of the most extreme.  be warned, both are dark and contains sensitive material.

SaberOfShadows SaberOfShadows says...

They both definitely deliver vaguely similar feelings, being--as they are--set in a fantasy world of dungeons and dragons. Both protagonists are also somewhat withdrawn from others, due to previous events in their lives. It is quite interestig to watch their journeys and how they face difficult challenges, using wit and a bit of help from some people.

Jayage Jayage says...

Both are Fantasy animes about adventurers who fight goblins, goblins, goblins, goblins and even more goblins, in both the fights against the goblins are very intense in are never easy for the adventures.

Fluffs Fluffs says...

Neither of these is your typical perfect-isekai anime. Both deal with some dark topics and don't idolize the troubles characters face

Brino Brino says...

Both are more dark than entertaining. And they both picture a more realistic kindof MMORPG survivalism and combat with a focus on what could happen to party and guild members, friends and comerades when they go to war even with minor creatures like goblins. Both deal with the theme of losing people.

zorlop zorlop says...

They are both a gritty realistic style that makes you feel a sense of realism for the characters.

MonopolyPutin MonopolyPutin says...

Both are dark fantasy adventures that leave you wanting more.  Grimgar may be a descent bit lighter than Goblin Slayer, but it is not any less entetaining.

LordKira1 LordKira1 says...

They are both Fantasy animes but feature slightly more realistic setting which makes the anime darker. Both animes treat phiscal and emotional weight well.

LastDarkness LastDarkness says...

Both have similar Dark Fantasy themes. The universes they exists in are very unforgiving and difficult compared to standard fantasy and character death or worse is a very real everyday possibility.   Dark Fantasy is the Souls style of anime.

Same dark isekai, tell stories about goblin frequently, death character in early story, revenge to goblin

Both of them are like MNORPg games which involves a lot of violent and awesome fight scenes with goblins and other monsters. The characters are also very interesting. Both of them has a party of members whom fight togehter inorder to complete there tasks which makes it more interesting to watch. The characters all develops Throughout the story which is very awesome

MistLiigh MistLiigh says...

Goblin Slayer very quickly made me think of Grimgar in its world design (moreso than other fantasy anime), but replacing the character and story elements that made Grimgar a fascinating and compelling series with pure shock value. So if you're interested in what Goblin Slayer could have been if it weren't all about controversial subject matter, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash may be worth checking out.

egon0044 egon0044 says...

Similar themes and overall story arc and progression. High fantasy video game and guild mechanics are the backbone for both stories.

Grimsnow Grimsnow says...

Both start kinda sad, but snowball well. I really liked both, as they share similar themes, etc.

Grizz Grizz says...

If you liked this, then you will probably like this too. As they both feature a fantasy story with realistic feelings of danger around the cast, putting them in cirumstances where they may not survive or come out unscathed.

Tsunabi Tsunabi says...

I first watched Hai to Gensou no Grimgar and liked it, when i watched Goblin Slayer i thinked it was really similar to the first one. The plot / ambientation seems really similar and some other aspects too.

Velerok Velerok says...

They are pretty similar. Both are realistic , with dark themes and without overpowering characters.

Dragonslayer4466 Dragonslayer4466 says...

Both contain some dark stuff and they are both set in a fantasy world with adventurers and classes

AnimeTundi AnimeTundi says...

The 2 animes are very similar. Both focus on slaying goblins which are a bigger threat than one would imagine. These 2 animes have more things in common than slaying the evil green monsters. All the characters are interesting from both shows, both have a lot of sadness included as well. Grimgar deals with grief while Goblin Slayer deals with the loss and trouble what the goblins make. The two animes main cast is about a guild where every member is unique in one way or another. If you have not watched Goblin Slayer yet I recommend watching it alone because some scenes are very disturbing. Probably one of the differences is that Goblin Slayer deals with the cruelty what the goblins cause to women.

Pomulon Pomulon says...

Both make a point about adventuring being dangerous. They're dark and try to be more realistic about mob hunting and dungeon crawling and what these activities would imply outside a mere videogame. Both are pretty good dark fantasy anime, with a well put together storyline and general feel to it.

I mean sure, but Berserk (the Original) ends the same way Goblin Slayer Begins. In a sense, there is hope in Goblin Slayer. Berserk, not so much.

AniKaMagika AniKaMagika says...

Although definitely not on the same level overall as Berserk due to lack of series, but surely Goblin slayer will grab you by your balls in the most unexpected moments, especially first few series when you just not even sure of what to expect and gives you nice chills.

Some similar things :well thought group battles, gore, reasonably strong MC, unpredictability.

Zirulan Zirulan says...

Both series deal with cruel faiths and how you might end up there. Also quite similar in some very dark tones and battle cruelty

Pomulon Pomulon says...

Dark Fantasy is what links them. Goblin Slayer has a slice of life feel amid all the chaos and killing and raping. Berserk encompasses a longer period of time and the story develops further, but both feature heart-breaking twists, pirric victories and terrible defeats. If you're looking for a serious story on a fantasy setting, both are a good pick.

ScottAF ScottAF says...

While very different tonally, both shows share a similar structure. A RPG inspired plot where characters go on quests to aquire gold and increase their skills in hopes of leveling up. Where the shows diverge is how they decide to depcict this adventure. Dungeon has elements of comedy, romance, not to mention a harem of girls for our bashful protagonist Bell. In Goblin Slayer there is much more focuse on the dangers of adventure and none of the naive expectations of fun. Goblin Slayer is much more graphic and realistic in its depiction of violence that naturally follows our characters. Be warned it is not for the queasy, especially the first episode which features sexual abuse. Dungeon is much more shonen and Goblin Slayer is more seinen to put it simply.

Both shows feature a protagonist without a family accompanied by a loli on thier dangerous journey. Both shows also introduce tertiary characters that join their party to alleviate some of the danger. An interesting aspect of Goblin Slayer that I found refreshing for the genre was that our eponymous protagonist is not the "Hero" of this world. There are other characters out there to defeat the big bad, he is simply the hero of his own story being told.

Qazinix Qazinix says...

Goblin Slayer is a darker more mature anime than Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? however I think that most people will find it a refreshing change from the normal dungeon crawler anime.

egon0044 egon0044 says...

Dungeon crall and game style world mechanics are common themes for both shows. Both also contain a male hero female companion dynamic.
