Both Gigantic Formula and Evangelion have a city that sends children to defend mankind and its faith. If you like that sort of thing, these are the anime series for you. Though Neon Genesis Evangelion was made in 1995, the concept behind it is similar to Gigantic Formula, which has children piloting large mecha to save the world!

Both of those animes have for main character a teenager boy, who have to choose between fighting to protect people or to let it go and do nothing. Both mechas are connected with their pilot, they have a conscience too, pilot and mecha make one, which is likely the same in both animes. There is differences in characters between those to series, that is what make Evangelion a bit gloomy and Gigantic like an optimistic atomsfear. Enjoy both :)

It is hard not to draw comparisons between Gigantic Formula and Neon Genesis Evangelion. However, many of the comparisons I can make contain spoilers. I can say that both are series that have children fighting in giant robots to save the world, where said robots have their own secrets that are slowly revealed.

Neon Genesis Evangelion gets more existensial, serious and mind bending than Gigantic Formula. So if you are looking for something a bit weirder and thinky, try NGE. If you want something more simple, try Gigantic Formula.

If you liked the 'more beneath the surface' treatment of the mecha, the symbiotic mecha-pilot relationship, and the 'impending apocalypse' feel of Gigantic Formula, then you will find these elements presented in an even superior way in Eureka Seven. In many ways, they share a similar tone - not least provided by the cheerful child protagonist in each.

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

The mechas and pilots of Eureka Seven and Gigantic Formula have several similarities. Nirvash and Susanoo are more than traditional mecha, having wills of their own and responding to the will of their pilots. Mana and Eureka act as translators (to steal from Gigantic Formula) for the mecha's will, while Renton and Shingo provide the determination to protect people.

If you enjoyed the symbiotic relationship in Gigantic Formula and want to watch something with a much better overall storyline, I wholeheartedly recommend Eureka Seven.

If the charming, almost naïve character designs and fluid animation style of Kamichu! are to your liking, then you'll also like Gigantic Formula (and vice versa). Both anime benefit from the signature styles of animation talents Yabuno Koji and Tanaka Ryo.

Shinji Ikari is a lonely and disturbed boy who was specially selected to be one of the three child pilots for the Evangelions; however, fighting his fears and battling alien creatures are two very different things, and neither is easy. Bokurano

Bokurano

When a group of children discover a strange cave at the beach, their lives are forever changed. Inside they find a hide out filled with computers and a man named Kokopelli who gives them a curious offer: to participate in a special game in which they save Earth from fifteen giant monsters. To defeat the invaders, he will give them a powerful mecha of black armor. The children eagerly sign the contract, name their new weapon Zearth, and must now take turns to pilot it; but the 'game' is in fact all too real and the consequences of battle become the stuff of nightmares. With no option to cancel the contract, is there any way to stop the game before it is too late for all of them?

I'm making this a one way recommendation, as I loved Bokurano but had serious issue with the pacing of Gigantic Formula. The premise of the two stories is quite similar - young school kids piloting giant mech to save the earth/their country. Bokurano is much darker and has a sense of impending doom for its hapless pilots, carefully exploring their life before they sat in the robot Zearth.

Both have tales that can be quite saddening, but I think Gigantic Formula fans will enjoy the more twisted way Bokurano is handled.

Super Robot Wars OG: Divine Wars

Super Robot Wars OG: Divine Wars

Two centuries have passed since man began colonizing space. The Earth Federation, which governs the human race, has known of the existence of hostile aliens for the past seven years and has been preparing for an invasion. However, while they see military force as the answer, others would rather surrender to the aliens in exchange for their lives. Taking advantage of the confusion, an organization called the Divine Crusaders declares the Earth Federation unfit to protect the planet and plunges humanity into a bloody civil war. Now only a small band of heroes - pilots of experimental super robots - can save the day. Pressured by a desperate Earth Federation government and faced with conflict on all sides, can this mottled group of individuals find the courage to not only end the civil war, but to also defend all of humanity?

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

Super Robot Wars and Gigantic Formula are similar on several levels. For starters, both use a video game tournament to recruit an individual that eventually pilots a giant mecha for a war. In both, it is not just combat ability, but force of will that matters. Additionally, each series has a wide variety of mecha, rather than a handful of similar units, making for a variety of interesting battles.

The similarities don't stop there though, but I can't really go into anything else without getting into spoiler territory. Suffice it to say, if you enjoyed Gigantic Formula you will probably like Super Robot Wars and vice versa.

Brain Powered

Brain Powered

In a possible future, mysterious devices called plates create robotic "Antibodys": Brain Powerds, or Grand Chers. In this world, a monumental structure known as Orphan lies at the bottom of the sea, slowly making its way to the surface to fly into space; however, its success would result in the death of every living being on the planet. Already, natural disasters are prevalent due to its ascension. In order to stop Orphen from obliterating humanity, the organization known as Novis Novah uses Brain Powerds to battle it, while Orphan searches for more plates and defends itself using Grand Chers. In the middle of this war is Hime, a girl who found and mastered a Brain Powerd on her own and joined Novis Noah, and Yuu, a boy who has served Orphan all his life but now decides to escape and fight alongside Hime. Can these two young people make a difference in this war? And what is the true purpose of Orphan?

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

Both Brain Powerd and Gigantic Formula use mechas that aren't quite of the traditional formula. Rather than big stompy super powered mechas piloted by brilliant individuals, the mechas in this series have minds of their own. Indeed, the mechas in these series actually choose their pilots to a degree and react to their will and feelings.

In addition to the above, there is a similar story line in which the characters are trying to forstall an event that might result in the destruction of the world, caused by the very beings they pilot.

It is my firm belief that if you watch both of these series, you will find many similarities and an equal level of entertainment.

Heroic Age

Heroic Age

Far, far away in a distant time, there is a tribe of people called the Golden Tribe who have the ability to create stars and foretell the future. They gave out a warning to those who have yet to mature: 'Move.'. Three tribes answered their call: the Silver Tribe, the Bronze Tribe, and the Heroic Tribe. Soon after, the Golden Tribe encountered a crashed ship in which only a baby human known as Age survived; they named the child's race the Iron Tribe and assigned one of the few living members of the Heroic Tribe to protect him and his race. Now, in a distant part of the galaxy, humanity is threatened with extinction at the hands of the other tribes. With only a prophecy to go on, they set out to the deepest depths of space to find their savior named Age -- humanity's last hope.

MalteseFalcon MalteseFalcon says...

Heroic Age and Gigantic Formula seem quite familiar to me. Sure, they both involve caring boys who pilot giant robots. Sure, the ties between robot and pilot are much closer than many series. But it goes a bit beyond the surface similarities I feel.

I can't explain it better than that. I can only suggest that if you liked one of these series, you should give at least a few episodes of the other a try.

GoShogun Movie

GoShogun Movie

Former soldier Shingo Hojo, French spy Remy Shimada, and Bronx gangster Killy Gagley aren’t exactly your “hero of justice” types. They’d rather be flirting, bantering, and goofing off than battling evil. But when the malicious worldwide organization Docooga attempts to steal a new, powerful form of energy called Beamler, they’ll take up arms to fight them... in the awesome giant robot, GoShogun! Now pursued around the world in their teleporting carrier Good Thunder, GoShogun’s piloting team must keep Docooga at bay while foiling their eccentric enforcers, righting wrongs and facing their past.
