The resemblances between The Big O and Giant Robo are more than obvious, from their similarity in animation style that combines old school with new, to their themes of how history can repeat itself. If you had a fun time with Giant Robo and want something a little more psychologically in depth, then check out The Big O.

Mecha that are cumbersome, slow moving, giant machines (with more then a passing visual nod to the lumbering monsters of the kaiju genre) and visuals that are rooted in a retro style - the style of classic manga in the case of Giant Robo, and an Art Deco/Noir look in the case of Big O. But more then robots, each series is populated by superheroes and supervillains - decidedly American inspired in Big O, and of a more pop culture Japanese origin in Giant Robo.

If the inhabitants of Big O live in a world without memory, the world of Giant Robo is one of buried memories and rewritten histories - all of which comes to the fore in time. Big O does drift into psychological issues in its latter half, while Giant Robo remains focused on extravagant but highly entertaining shonen antics, but if you enjoyed one of these titles I think the other is worth consideration.

The Mecha are lumbering giants with designs that harken back to an older time.

The character designs on the humans looks simple and fresh. The animation in both is fairly decent OAV 90's style.

Good action, both should work well with one another.

Giant Robo stands at the beginning of mecha genre, it influenced the scene already half a century ago. Someone who enjoyed it might also like some of the modern mecha series. Of those, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is considered to be one of the best.

If you watched Giant Robo attentively, you will even be able to immediately recognise some basic elements in the design of Kamina, TTGL's main character!

Two factions fight for the dominion of Earth's surface with giant robots, street fighting style. At times the main character's robot acts as if it had a will of its own or is influenced by its operator's will.

Like Giant Robo, Read or Die takes place in a retro-futuristic setting populated by superhuman individuals. While Robo's heroes are based on the mystic warriors of Hong Kong cinema, I'm sure you'll enjoy R.O.D's "X-men meets James Bond" feel.

Getter Robo Armageddon

The world is in ashes, and the invaders are back and in full control. The 1990's saw a bunch of old TV and manga series re-imagined. The "retro" trend began with Giant Robo in 1992 and, in my opinion, culminated with Getter Robo Armageddon in 1998. These OVAs will please fans who grew up with the original shows, but viewers not familiar with the source material need not worry. The series are more than enjoyable, even if you're missing on the nostalgia.

Giant Robo and Metropolis take the design aesthetic of older manga titles but provide them with quality, modern animation. With both titles being epic sci-f yarns involving inventors and robots and unrest, they're not very dissimilar works. If you've watched one and are looking for another recent sci-fi anime to be inspired by an older look, you may wish to try the other.

If you like one of these shows you should check out the other. Both are retrofuturistic (The future as seen from the 50's) with amazing almost magical technologies that power most of human civilization (the Shizuma drive in Giant Robo and the G-Reactive engine in Blue Earth). In both cases the enemy takes great interest in the devices. There is lots of action and destruction and quite a few chases and last minute saves in both shows. Both have boy protagonists who are the last hope for humanity and have to grow up quickly and deal with death, loss and their own powerlessness and both have unusual endings. Giant Robo probably has the most ironic ending in anime and Project Blue Earth has an ending that seems to come out of nowhere and raises all kinds of questions.

While I think Giant Robo is the better of the two, fans of retrofuturistic shows with boy wonders and lots of action will enjoy both shows.

Both titles are state-of-the-art cel-animation from the early 90s, and plenty of well-known names participated in their production. In both, an evil organization set in world domination/destruction (whose bosses and minions usually wear very characteristic suits and masks) through the use of advanced technology machinery is confronted by the special powers of the main characters.
