This review has no movie spoilers, but some minor spoilers from Arise may be present. I recommend watching Arise or Arise: Alternative Architecture before the movie anyway.

My Arise review:

Overall: 6.5/10 (Good) - Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie is the high-octane conclusion to Arise and is noticeably better quality than the earlier series. While it is still largely presented as a loosely-related reimagining of the original Ghost in the Shell canon, it manages to hold enough interest and in-jokes to be a fun watch for fans of the original SAC series.

Recommended for: Ghost in the Shell fans who have seen Arise will likely get some entertainment out of the movie.

Story: 7/10-Good

Creativity/uniqueness bonus points: Nothing particularly special is added to the franchise.

Humour bonus points: +1 - There are a fair number of jokes regarding the older series.

General Plot and Structure 2.5/4 - As the conclusion of the plot to Arise, it does a good job. The ending is exactly as I predicted and in my opinion is pretty obvious, but it is still a reasonable plot. Overall it felt much more coherent and one of the major improvements is that there are no references to the really dumb boyfriend subplot of Arise.

Pacing 2/2 - Pacing was fast in a good way. With a more focused plot, it didn't feel as rushed as Arise.

Emotional impact: 1/3 - There was very little emotional impact really.

Conclusion: 1/1 - The conclusion was, in my opinion, pretty great.

Annoying/mindset-breaking negative points - None

Animation: 8.5/10-Very good

Artwork 2.75/3 - The artwork in The New Movie was very crisp and well-done.

Character Designs 2/3 - Most of the old team looks similar or the same as the old series (really good), although the colours are generally more vibrant. Motoko (the main character) has a very different cybernetic body than in the other titles.

My favourite improvement from Arise is that they didn't royally screw up Motoko's face. While I am still not a big fan of her character design, the animation of her face is far, far better than the earlier series and nothing made me grimace.

Action Animation 2/2 - The coolest part of this movie is definitely the action. It was all very well done and flowed well, constantly keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Other animation 1.75/2 - The other animation also looks really good for the most part. There are some repeat animations though that came across as a bit lazy.

------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------------------

Characters: 6.25/10-Slightly good

Personality 1.75/3 - Some of what I said before still applies; Motoko is still quite different from her previous character. *See the quote from my Arise review below for why I don't like her new personality* That being said, she comes across a lot less whiny this time around and you can tell they were trying to make her character merge better with her character in the later canon.

"While it isn't drastically different than in the other titles it simply doesn't line up or make a lot of sense. In Arise, Motoko is somewhat hot-headed and almost juvenile at times. It draws some parallels to Korra from The Legend of Korra (I know, not an anime), though not to the same degree.

While this personality wouldn't be bad if it was used in another anime and while she wasn't transformed into a weakling, it simply doesn't make sense in the context of the story. At the point where Arise starts Motoko is a highly trained black ops soldier who has likely killed quite a few people and has otherwise gone through a lot crap. It's hard to believe she became a slightly cold and highly professional individual within the few years she served in a police capacity."

Development 2/3 - As detailed above, there is some slight development in Motoko.

Uniqueness 2.5/4 - All of the side characters are similar to the other titles, but Motoko's new personality is significantly less unique.

Sound: 6/10-Slightly good

Voice Acting (Dub) 2.5/3 - Every voice actor is great, including the new voice actor for Motoko. While the voice for Motoko is quite different, so is the character so they can't be faulted for it. The one thing that left me scratching my head was that Motoko's commanding officer is voiced by the same voice actor as the original Motoko. This seems like a very odd decision and was somewhat jarring.

Music 2.5/6 - The music in general is as mediocre as in Arise, but there are some slight improvements.

Sound Effects 1/1 - Very, very good. All of the guns and explosions sounded truly awesome.
