The two main male characters from FMP and Suisei no Gargantia are similar in that they're members of the military who find themselves in situations they are totally unprepared for. Whether it's Sagara navigating school life without the use of guns or grenades, or Led coming to terms with living in a society totally unlike his own, both shows show us what it might be like to make a military-to-civilian transition.

Drayd Drayd says...

Similar protagonist relationship and personality, both are based on individuals who are out of thier comfort zones.

baconslayer509 baconslayer509 says...

The similarity between the 2 are striking, both military background with exclusion to all other things. There is small difference in mecha design. But a female companion whom they interact with is what changes their perspective to some better place. The main difference would be that full metal panic is more of a comedy where  Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is more serious dealing with moral issues

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these anime feature a boy that has only known military life trying to communicate with a girl that has never been in the military. Talk about miscommunication errors. With giant mechas, big fight scenes, and a great cast of military and non-military personnel, these two anime should become allies in your watch list.

HKBattosai HKBattosai says...

If you liked Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet or Full Metal Panic!, then you'll probably like the other since both anime feature somewhat realistic and believable mecha suits. Plus, both male main characters (Ledo, Gargantia...) and (Sagara, FMP!) have a serious militaristic disposition and loyalty, are quite skilled, but also share a common good-nature towards protecting those that matter to them the most.

Gargantia and Shinsekai Yori are sci-fi animes. Otherwise, they have little in common, except that they are shining examples of sci-fi anime done well. Both have complex, layered stories that explore big questions through their characters. If you're big on sci-fi with a good plot/story, these two will both be of interest to you.

Gaeryc Gaeryc says...

Scifi, weird world, dark secrets... Altought gargantia is absolutely more light than from the new world. Both have great atmosphere and can really make you think.

ShinigamiRULES ShinigamiRULES says...

Gargantia and shinsekai yori are actually quite similiar to each other. Starts with the main character, born into the world only following what the adults say and well, dark secrets are revealed, and if you actually follow it through for both animes , you'll find out that they are really similiar. They get decieved by lies and it all makes you think about the psychological part of it all.

The difference is that it is in different worlds and that shinsekai yori has a darker aspect to it compared to gargantia.

GrnEydDvl GrnEydDvl says...

These shows are surprisingly similar.  It takes a while for the plot to unfold and for the deeper secrets to be revealed, but the process of discovering what is truly going on behind the scenes is what makes each show worthwhile.  Both shows explore the deep psychological themes of loyalty, friendship, loss, honesty, and secrets and focus not only on a group of friends, but also on the larger political system of the world.  These are both excellent shows and if you liked one, I think you will like the other.

Marintha Marintha says...

These are both anime that really make you sit back and consider the definition of 'humanity'. Definitely worth a watch if you like a deep, thoughtful anime!

Both are futuristic mech-action series telling the tale about humanity engaged in a massive war against an alien enemy. Their societies are militaristic, ever vigilant against their foes. They both feature a male mecha pilot as the central character, and there is some fighting to be had in both.

Of course, Gargantia changes setting pretty fast, but the character interactions and focus on exploring how the setting works are still very much like the one we're seeing in Sidonia.

If you liked either of these anime, chances are that you'd like the other one.

ofall ofall says...

The aliens in both are pretty reminiscent of the other. Deadly, tentacled creatures. The fight between them and humanity are also similar, although you only see a whole lot of the in the first episode of Gargantia.

I found the setting similar also. Although Suisei no Gargantia takes place mostly on earth and Sidonia no Kishi in space, The ships look pretty similar, like tons of buildings stacked and interspersed into a big maze-like enviornment.

Lastly, The main characters in both are seen as outsiders for at least part of both series.

SamIchi SamIchi says...

It's a very similar set up just like almost every mecha/alien type anime. If you enjoyed one, you'll enjoy the other.

kisuitha kisuitha says...

When watching Sidonia I constantly got the feeling that it was very similar to Gargantia.

They both fight octopus like creatures in mechas. They both have societies living in ships. They are both constantly in war.

I also felt that Gargantia explained more about the background of the creatures while Sidonia only concentrated on getting rid of them and never wonder where they were coming from.

Heroic Age

Heroic Age

Far, far away in a distant time, there is a tribe of people called the Golden Tribe who have the ability to create stars and foretell the future. They gave out a warning to those who have yet to mature: 'Move.'. Three tribes answered their call: the Silver Tribe, the Bronze Tribe, and the Heroic Tribe. Soon after, the Golden Tribe encountered a crashed ship in which only a baby human known as Age survived; they named the child's race the Iron Tribe and assigned one of the few living members of the Heroic Tribe to protect him and his race. Now, in a distant part of the galaxy, humanity is threatened with extinction at the hands of the other tribes. With only a prophecy to go on, they set out to the deepest depths of space to find their savior named Age -- humanity's last hope.

At the start of both Gargantia and Heroic Age, you get a fateful meeting between a civilisation and a mecha hero. the hero then proceeds to learn a lot from his new hosts by living and working with them, and also protecting them. Both these shows are really about a clash of races and a hero forced to overcome his naivity in order to bring about justice. They're also significantly about their worldbuilding and the interesting philosophical questions that arise as a result. If you enjoyed these things about one show, definitely check out the other.

Brad Brad says...

Both of these series feature a mecha protagonist who must learn to live, and to work within an alien civilisation, while at the same time protecting them. The world each anime is set in plays an important role in both, with Gargantia especially being pretty unique.

Mechs future technology. Heroic age has feel good ending, while gargantia has awesome mech concept, gargantia has mind f*ck twist watch out.

And since both have some nice plots that cant be guesed just by watching 2 or more episodes it makes them a gereat series. Unlike some anime that u can gues it is gona end just by watching 1 episode.

Both of these anime are about aliens in mechs coming to earth. Both have a somewhat military structure to the alien's lives, and the aliens do not fully understanding their Earth counterparts who live freer lives. With the aliens having vastly superior firepower and at least one alien working on the side of the earth people, these anime are very similar.

Expelled From Paradise was surprisingly good.  My expectations for anime movies are something around garbage and dog poo.  Both of these anime have the common theme of a person* being stuck in a foreign landscape, far away from what they know.

Trying not to give too much away with this but:

hot anime chick

hot anime dude

overmind that controls society which have varying importance depending on which of these anime you watched(absurdly obvious in the first minutes of both anime)

people teaching goobers(foreigner) how to interact with society.

ccallstar111 ccallstar111 says...

Both have a common theme of the post apocalyptic Earth and the creation of artificial intelligence. Both main characters face internal struggle to preserve humanity in a high functioning technological world.

TheHigurashiGuy TheHigurashiGuy says...

When I watched Expelled from paradise, it directly reminded me of Gargantia. Both play on the devastated world, where a more or less working community has been formed by the remaining humans. When the main charakter, who comes from a technological advanced society, shows up, he/she has some problems to get along in the world foreign to him/her.

Vandread

Both Vandread and Gargantia have mecha featured, but in neither case is the giant robot the star of the show.  If you are seeking a show about characters with a "mecha "feel and subplot, these two anime are Mecha Lite shows, both without the drama and angst generally associated with mecha-driven shows.

Macross Frontier

Macross Frontier

After being threatened by extinction at the hands of alien invaders called the Zentradi, humanity undertook the task of guaranteeing itself a future by launching fleets of colony ships into space. On Macross Frontier, one such fleet, high school student Saotome Alto's life is changed forever: the fleet is suddenly attacked by unidentified creatures while he is performing aerial stunts for a concert by the wildly popular idol Sheryl. Alto quickly finds himself in the cockpit of a new-model fighter struggling to protect Ranka Lee, a young girl he met only hours earlier, from the invaders' swath of destruction. Noting his performance during this incident, the S.M.S. Skull Squadron private military company invites Alto to join their organization, where he continues protecting his friends and Macross Frontier.

No-brainer since both animes feature a large city that needs to be protected from an alien monster threat, a male hero with female friends and the balance of comedy and mech fights.

Both female leads are very similar, very open and friendly girls who have alot of fans.

They both give the same feel (aliens in space that are attacking humans who left earth and are now living in space.) even the characters are a bit similar.

Origin: Spirits of the Past

Origin: Spirits of the Past

Agito was born into a world that is quite different than our own. Many years ago a brilliant researcher attempted to save humanity from its excessively damaged environment by altering the DNA of plants. However, these mentally-awakened plants recognized the inherent threat of humans, and attacked them; the end result was a stalemate between the forest and the few remaining human centers. Agito's home city is green with life because the forest controls it. There is an uneasy peace which is facilitated by a small number of humans that allowed the forest to alter them to be in concert with itself. Being that his father is one of those, Agito's view of the forest is not one of fear but rather one that respects the human dependency. Agito will be challenged to prove this relationship when a random event gives the humans, who still see the forest as an enemy, a new perceived advantage in their war.

Gargantia and Origin are sci-fi anime set in lush, richly detailed worlds with unusual environments. Common to both is the idea that mankind ruined its own environment through experimentation, and the current era of humanity has adapted to profound changes in Earth's environment. Two stories about quests to discover relics from the past, there are many similarities between Gargantia and Origin that make them natural recommendations for each other.

Both anime include:

  1. A future where something's gone very wrong for humanity, leading to military rule.
  2. A young man who faces deep, ethical and philosophical dilemnas.
  3. Mecha.
  4. Some very beautiful elements. The setting sticks out to me the most in Gargantia, while Inori's song captured me in Guilty Crown, but there's more to the beauty in both anime.

I especially recommend Guilty Crown to those who were intrigued by the thought-provoking parts of Gargantia, but all four reasons above could draw a fan of one show into the other.

NanashiSama NanashiSama says...

While both series look into similar themes, such as human modification and fighting for the right reasons, they are quite different in terms of setting, and content.

Guilty Crown being more for an "Anti-Government" or "Fight for Freedom" scenario, where Gargantia is more about the human race in a very different post-apocalyptic setting exploring peace and understanding. The content is very different, but if you liked one, you should at least check out the other.
