This anime is ok

, to be honest the ending was very dissapointing ..

i felt like the  story was  basically a  rush job ,

which is sad because it has alot of potiental..

maybe i can just blame it on bad  story telling ?

if you want just a fun anime with some music ..then this is a good  anime to pass the time

but its not deep like some people have reviewed other places....

and no where close to beck

Entretiene.

Positive

*There’s no other thing that I can start this review with than with the music of Fuuka. The music in this anime was fantastic! You might know that I’m huge classical music fan but I can definitely appreciate good rock music as well. And the music from Fuuka hit the spot precisely. I love this type of music, I loved both the songs sang by Fuuka and by Koyuki.

For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Link on my profile page.

And on top of all that great music was the opening song “Climbers High”. My God, did I love that opening. With me it’s very simple to determine if a song is good or not. When my foot start to move on the rhythm of the song, than it’s a good song. And I felt it immediately with this opening. We’ve all experienced it before. You hear the first notes of a song you know that it’s going to be good. We'll I had that with Fuuka’s op. We’re only 4 months into 2017 but I say that Climbers High has a very high chance to, at least, be nominated for my JV Anime Award for Best Opening Song of 2017.

*Now I do have to say something about the storyline as well in this review. And my last positive point is about the deviation from the manga. Now not everyone, and especially among the manga readers, will agree with this. But I was glad that the anime diverted away from the story of the manga in episode 10 or 11. There are 2 reasons why I was happy that the anime did that. First it would have been quite tragic if the anime followed the manga at that point and that wouldn’t have fitted the overall theme of the anime imo.

But the second and more important reason is that by avoiding this tragic event, the animators made it so that the anime was completable in 13 episodes. The original story from the manga continues for more than 100 chapters after the event and I can imagine that quite a large part of that deals with the aftermath of set event. If the anime had to cram all of those emotions and development in 2 episodes that would have been way too rushed.

Negative

*Now because of this new storyline that the anime took, I do have to say that the anime’s ending isn’t the most original. It’s quite a stereotypical ending for this type of anime. But as I said the creators of the anime had to make a choice. Keep adapting the manga’s story and leave us with or an open ending or way too rushed final episodes. Or make a new storyline that’s less deep and intriguing but completable in 13 episodes. And I hate open endings so somewhere I’m glad that they did complete the story despite it not being super original.

Conclusion

So as a conclusion, overall Fuuka wasn’t a special anime. You can see that at the low number of positive and negative points that I was able to find about this anime. It didn’t do a lot of special things which I found to be extra positive or negative. That of course doesn’t apply to the music which made me like this anime so much more. So overall I’m going to rate Fuuka at 3,5 stars and put it on the 3rd place in my top 3 of the past Winter 2017 season. Mostly thanks to its music.

I thought the show started with a nice vibe, with Yuu and Fuuka's growing realationship, the formation of the band and Yuu learning to play bass. But sadly it soon gets bogged down with a focus on Koyukiv who's Yuu's childhood friend and a pop idol. For me it's less of a realistic love triangle and more of the case that the show just really ignored most of the original set up for Yuu and Fuuka for a number of episodes.

There's a certain predictability to where this anime is going which it can't avoid either. Unless you have read the manga because the anime completely changes what happens at a key point and goes for the crowd pleasing ending. I understanding why they did it for a twelve episode show but the manga carried so much more depth where as the anime comes off as fairly lightweight.

It's not that I think this is a bad show, it's just an average one which could have been deeper and more meaningful so therefore it feels like a missed opportunity.

Still if you haven't read the manga then you may find this a pleasing if not too demanding watch.

Story

Nothing too special and fairly predictable, occasionally moving scenes though. Overall it felt a little disjointed to me.

Animation

The character designs are good, the animation is of a fairly high standard.

Sound

Since this is essentially a music anime, there are a number of songs which personally I enjoyed. The score also has one or two good themes, the voice work on this anime whilst nothing special was pretty good.

Characters

Overall some good characters but no-one especially unique or memorable, I would have liked a bit more backstory on some of the supporting characters also.

Oddities/Observations

In the first and third episodes there are some really unnecessary fanservice scenes. I have nothing against fanservice but they just seemed really out of place with the rest of the show.

Yuu had the look of a young Paul McCartney about him, I'm sure this must have be intentional.
