Mecha mecha mecha... and main characters that while quiet and dysfunctional still manage to save the world before breakfast. Secret organizations are definitely the best, and always necessary when dealing with mecha topics, and these are two of the best ones out there. Especially good is the tone difference between these two animes, as neon genesis generally tends to be serious (with the exception of pen-pen and misato) while FMP provides frequent and healthy doses of humor (gotto love that paper whip thing of chidori's)

FMDGandi FMDGandi says...

Neon Genesis is quite close to Full Metal panic because of the fighting scenes and the main charcters being male nearly children. Sousuke and Shinji have some things in common too, both are very obidient and extremely good at what they are doing. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a lot more serious though while Full Metal Panic has much comedy in it.

Akuma Akuma says...

Evangelion is the ultimate mech-robot anime. If you liked Full Metal Panic's crazy mech designs, and excellent capabilities, you will be drooling when you see what evangelions can do!!!!! A picture of this anime got stuck in my personal dictionary next to the term "eye-candy."

JAhU JAhU says...

To some extent, FMP! is a parody of NGE. If you ever wondered where the author of FMP! took his ideas from, then NGE might be the answer. The number of references is big, but I'll limit myself to mentioning characters and mecha. If you liked FMP! you should watch NGE, because it will help you understand more of the jokes in FMP.

pyro pyro says...

Both series are meccha, have great humour design and music. Where Evangelion defeats FMP is:

-the story is better

-it combines humor and action in just one serie

If you liked FMP you'll love Evangelion

Burst Angel

Burst Angel

In the future, Tokyo has fallen victim to syndicates, trigger-happy people who run rampant and other groups who don't like to follow the rules. In response, an organization called RAPT has been created, whose goal is to maintain their definition of "peace". In the underground, however, science involving humans and powerful mechanics is progressing at a steady phase, but for what purpose? Meet our four angels who know how to kick butt and raise hell whenever it's needed. Their motto? Shoot first, talk later. Their mission? To make the seemingly impossible possible, of course...

Both FMP and Burst Angel are about mecha action without the light shows that Gundam provides. For you mecha lovers, you can't go wrong with either one.

Tomte Tomte says...

Another action/mecha series with a streak of comedy to it. BT is no way near FMP! but there is a lot of mecha action in both of them, of if u are a mecha fan its worth checking them both out.

riseofanimal riseofanimal says...

Both of FMP and Burst Angle are great for the mecha fan. Both do a great job of mixing in comedy and action. Although the storyline aren't the same both have great action scenes.

KiraRin KiraRin says...

I really enjoy a show with a good storyline, plenty of action and some likeable characters. Both FMP and Burst Angel feature these in aplenty. Not usually being a mech fan, I found myself engrossed in giant robots battling away, as this is not the main focus of either series.

If you enjoy all of the features listed above, I really recommend the above shows as something a little more interesting than most.

Galadriel Galadriel says...

Lots of comedy? Cool mecha action sequences? Mercenaries and secret organizations dealing with conspiracies and various underworld affairs? You will definitely find these aspect in both FMP and Burst Angel! If you liked one of them then you will enjoy the other one as well.

Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon

Rokuro Okajima is a small-time salaryman who is carrying documents for his company, when the ship he's traveling on is attacked by pirates. Kidnapped, he discovers to his dismay that his employers' main concern is to ensure the documents don't get into the wrong hands, even if it means sending the carrier to the bottom of the sea. Now, with his former life ruined and his kidnappers seeming comparatively friendly, "Rock" decides to join their merry band of mercenaries, and sets out with a new career to the shadier corners of the South China Sea.

Full Metal Panic and Black Lagoon both deal with similar organisations; independant armed groups that kick asses of bad guys. The characters are well flawed and benifet from each others company. On the action side both have some seriously cool fight scenes that will blow one, if not two of your socks off.

eaper eaper says...

Both the organizations these series are centered around (Mithril and Lagoon) are armed groups for hire, centered around characters with believable flaws, and amazing fight scenes.

Barth Barth says...

I can't believe no one has said it yet, well not more bluntly at least. One of the main reasons I enjoyed FMP! and Black Lagoon so much is the particular relationship between the two main characters, Chidori and Sōsuke on one side, Revy and Rock on the other. The sexual tension between them is palpable !

Why are their relationships so similar ? Because both characters in each series obviously develop feelings for each other but neither one of them can confess them, due to the fact that they're all emotionally retarded, Sōsuke being socially inept, Chidori being a tsundere, Revy being a sociopath and Rock being… Rock. Also both couples have the same composition : one normal person and one gun freak/badass.

There are other similarities but I wanted to stress this one in particular. As for the differences, Black Lagoon (adapted from a seinen manga) is more violent, though FMP! gets darker and more violent in the second season.

RG RG says...

Two sets of unlikely couples:

Kaname Chidori and Rokuro "Rock" Okajima are more or less normal compared to their overly violent respective partners Sousuke Sagara and Revy.

If you find these sorts of pairings to your liking, these shows are for you.

PurplePeopleEater PurplePeopleEater says...

Besides the fact that one of the female characters in black lagoon looks a lot like one of the characters in Full Metal Panic and both remind me of the other, there are mercenaries and the main character is thrown into a situation he isn't really trained for and sometimes has a hard time fitting it. For Rokuro, he left his ordinary job and joined a group of mercenaries....except he hasn't even used a gun before and his personality doesn't quite fit. Sagura on the other hand is a mercenary who is ordered to attend school undercover as a body guard for a female student...except all he knows is the battlefield and adapting to a normal school life just isn't something he is quite cut out for. Both characters struggle in their new positions with some friends?? to help them along the way...

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

In the distant future, the human race is on the brink of destruction. Mankind, which now drifts in space aboard a massive, technologically-advanced base known as Avalon, is poised to launch one final, desperate attack against its enemy, the alien race Hideauze. It’s during this battle that Ledo, a mecha pilot, is thrown into a wormhole and sent to an unfamiliar place: Earth, the lost birthplace of humanity said to have turned to ice long ago. Having been saved by the inhabitants of the Gargantia, a fleet of ships that traverses the now-flooded planet, Ledo must come to terms with these primitive people with their backwards language and technology, learn to communicate, and try to find a way back home to his place in the sky.

snivets snivets says...

The two main male characters from FMP and Suisei no Gargantia are similar in that they're members of the military who find themselves in situations they are totally unprepared for. Whether it's Sagara navigating school life without the use of guns or grenades, or Led coming to terms with living in a society totally unlike his own, both shows show us what it might be like to make a military-to-civilian transition.

Drayd Drayd says...

Similar protagonist relationship and personality, both are based on individuals who are out of thier comfort zones.

baconslayer509 baconslayer509 says...

The similarity between the 2 are striking, both military background with exclusion to all other things. There is small difference in mecha design. But a female companion whom they interact with is what changes their perspective to some better place. The main difference would be that full metal panic is more of a comedy where  Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is more serious dealing with moral issues

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these anime feature a boy that has only known military life trying to communicate with a girl that has never been in the military. Talk about miscommunication errors. With giant mechas, big fight scenes, and a great cast of military and non-military personnel, these two anime should become allies in your watch list.

HKBattosai HKBattosai says...

If you liked Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet or Full Metal Panic!, then you'll probably like the other since both anime feature somewhat realistic and believable mecha suits. Plus, both male main characters (Ledo, Gargantia...) and (Sagara, FMP!) have a serious militaristic disposition and loyalty, are quite skilled, but also share a common good-nature towards protecting those that matter to them the most.

Valkyria Chronicles

Valkyria Chronicles

The Nation of Gallia has always remained neutral in conflicts and has only gone to war to defend itself. However, as war flares between the East Europan Imperial Alliance and the Atlantic Federation, Gallia is soon targeted for its abundance of ragnite ore, a versatile and hugely valuable material. The Civilian Militia is soon called into action, and Welkin Gunther - son of a legendary war hero - is named leader of Squad 7. Under his command are the headstrong and practical Alicia Melchiott; the sharp-tongued Brigitte Stark; the grizzled veteran, Largo Potter; and Welkin's adopted sister Isara, whose Darcsen heritage means she faces prejudice, even from members of her own squad. With the rest of Squad 7 and the mighty tank Edelweiss, they must do their best to defend Gallia.

Valkyria Chronicles and Full Metal Panic! are two animes with different story plot but they are all set in a war time and both of them have a strong female character and a protective male character.Of course they have their own differences but they r very much alike and im sure that if you like one of them for sure you will like the second

eaper eaper says...

Each of these series are comedies based around conflict, with a tsundere character that comes to find that they are much more important to the war effort than originally thought.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

The time of war can break people or make them out to be heroes, this is the test for the main characters in Valkyria Chronicles and Full Metal Panic.  While the male leads strive to protect their female counterparts, the females rise to the top to win out in victory.

clutzattack clutzattack says...

I'm not sure anything can beat Full Metal Panic for awesomeness but Valkyria was close for me.

Both series do cliff hangers really well. Every episode advances the plot a little more and the pacing is a nice steady run to the end.

In my opinion, the love interest angle in Valkyria is also similar to FMP. Shy heros paired with strong female protagonists.  Welkin reminds me of Sousuke in that they are both men of few words who are strategically minded. This isn't labeled as romance, but I think it was a significant character development arc and part of the story.

RahXephon

RahXephon

Ayato Kamina may seem like an average boy in a devastated world, but after being captured by TERRA, a military organization set on saving the world from the Mu, an alien race set on "tuning" the world, he realizes he is an instrument in deciding the fate of humanity and piloting RahXephon. Not only is Ayato the only person who can control the mecha, but he also has a terrible fate of his own. Holding onto memories of his old life and grasping to keep his own humanity, he must struggle in this new world and realize his true potential with RahXephon.

Similar in the vain that both series do have mecha. And although FMP is primarily a romance/comedy/action, I personally think if you loved one you will most certainly like the other. Both have excellent animation and amazing soundtracks to boot.

RikkuxDisaster RikkuxDisaster says...

While it might seem weird at first to recommend FMP for RahXephon, the idea popped into my head based on the fact that while though they both have mecha, they also have a very large storyline apart from the major fighting machines. Full Metal Panic and RahXephon are alike in the fact that the characters have lives and stories outside of fighting.

stingreis stingreis says...

Both anime's bring together a strange male/female duo whose relationship gets strange as the truth is revealed about the abilities and responsibilities of the characters.

The mecha fighting is similar though the animation is worlds apart. So if you enjoyed the type of story that one anime brought to the table, you are sure to like the other

D.N.Angel

D.N.Angel

For Niwa Daisuke, turning 14 should be accompanied by romance and the promise of new adventures into adulthood, but instead comes with a surprising revelation: all male children of the Niwa's bloodline inherit the powers (alter ego) of Dark, a phantom thief, upon their 14th birthday! Now, in addition to his ever-present quest to win the heart of his childhood friend Risa, Daisuke must commit acts of thievery (with his doppelganger Dark controlling his body), to steal mysterious pieces of art for unknown purposes. For Daisuke, his growing pains are just beginning!

Both have ordinary schoolboys thrust into rather unordinary circumstances, trying to live their normal life anyway. Plenty of action, comedy and a subtle, glowing kind of romance. Both also employ some rather nifty animation techniques, if that's your thing.

madcomic madcomic says...

Both FMP and DNAngel mix humor, romance and action (and a lot more) together in a way that keeps you interested, without having to watch too much of one thing.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

The male protagonists in D.N Angel and Full Metal Panic have a similar personality, being extraordinarily different from the people around them while still trying to live a normal life and fit in.  The action is what keeps both of these stories going while mixing some romance in too.

7thMethuselah 7thMethuselah says...

The power behind both Chrno Crusade and Full Metal Panic lies in the dynamics between the two lead characters. Both shows feature a strong-willed energetic character (Rosette-Kaname) and a more silent, different, and somewhat out-of-this-world character (Chrno-Sousuke). The storyline is very different but the lead characters have very comparable personalities. The difference in background and culture between the main duo gives these shows a good drive. One one side this gives great action as one of the characters drags the other one along but at the same time their differences lead to some pretty funny situations and misunderstandings. In short: very comparable main characters and comedy, but set in a completely different storyline.

DistMan DistMan says...

Full Metal Panic and Chrno Crusade have the same structure and feeling: They kick off with some action, comedy, light-hearted stuff, but farther into the anime, things turn more and more serious at the same time, as the underlying plot becomes more and more visible. The themes themselves are very different but I'd like to put it like this: Chrno Crusade has a theme of the past, whereas FMP has a theme of the future, and they are both just as captivating.

Morwen Morwen says...

There's two main reasons for this recommendation:

For one thing, the relationships between the two main leads (Chrono/Rosette and Sousuke/Kaname) have a similar dynamic. Although Chrono's personality is quite different to Sousuke's once you get down to the nitty-gritty, the pairings follow a similar formula of a quiet, protective outcast falling for the strong, hot-tempered girl he's supposed to protect.

Also, the series both have a mix of comedy, romance and drama, which gets darker and darker as the series builds. In general the tone of CC is much more cynical and sad in the end, but otherwise the balance of emotions are similar in the two.

It's not a sure thing you'd like one if you like the other considering the different settings and plot, but if you enjoyed the above in either series, the other is worth a try.

Both of these shows have mecha of course, i think they give you the same kind of feeling watching them. Also, for the most part, the romance in both shows are one sided, in full metal panic, sousuke is oblivious that the girl likes him, and in kurogane no linebarrels, the guy likes the girl but the girl just finds him disgusting. I think everyone that likes one would easily like the other. =)
