The only real connection between FMP: TSR and Escaflowne is the realistic mecha combat. If you enjoyed FMP TSR's mecha combat, then you'll enjoy Escaflowne as it also has realistic mecha combat.
There's something special about Full Metal Panic: there aren't very many anime series out there like it. It doesn't fit perfectly into a "mecha" genre because the story isn't entrely based around the machines. Most of the story revolves around comedic love/school drama. That aside, Escaflowne is probably the most similar anime I could recommend for FMP. While Escaflowne is primarily fantasy in setting, the psychological, love, and internal/external conflicts are extremely similar in nature. Escaflowne, like FMP focuses heavily on character relationships and their reaction to the mecha. Neither series is ONLY about mecha. Both titles are also extremely balanced between love drama, action, mecha, etc. FMP and Escaflowne are both titles I consider to be in a completely different league of anime.

Outlaw Star is a lot like FMP! TSR. Both have a good story, but don't get too deep and stick mainly to the action. Next to all the action there's plenty of humor to keep people interested, and there's even a bit of romance.
FMP has a bit more comedy, but both have some great fights and an atmosphere that just sucks you in.
If you liked Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, I bet you might also like Outlaw Star. Outlaw Star has excellent humor and funny scenes that make these two very comparable and, of course, they both have really cool battle scenes also.
So fasten your seat belts and prepare for amusement!

If you enjoyed the awesome fighting scenes in Full Metal Panic!: The Second Raid you're going to love Cowboy Bebop since it's full of them. Trust me, this reason is big enough to make a recommendation. ^^
